    Getting to Know Stephanie Kruse

    There are a lot of impressive titles you can use to describe Stephanie Kruse: entrepreneur, marketer, philanthropist, leader, adventurer, nurse. And now with her planned gift to the Renown Health Nursing Excellence Endowment, she can add one more to the list: a member of the Renown Legacy Society – a group of visionary supporters who have chosen to make a lasting commitment to the future health and wellbeing of northern Nevadans. This generous planned gift comes on the heels of a significant cash gift made to the Nursing Education Fund last summer. Stephanie is an inspiring example of someone who has dedicated her life to helping others. The daughter of a nurse and a retired nurse herself, Stephanie knows the hard work, selflessness and dedication it takes to create a successful business and community. As Chair of the Renown Health Foundation Board of Directors, she also understands the importance of attracting and retaining nurses within a healthcare system. As a way to contribute to a cause near and dear to her heart, she decided to include the Renown Nursing Excellence Endowment as a beneficiary of her retirement plans. “I wanted to honor the memory of my mother, who was a registered nurse in a small-town hospital in Iowa.,” said Stephanie. “I was always very conscious of her passion for providing great care to her patients, and I wanted to provide funding for others interested in nursing.” Across the nation, health systems are facing a shortage of nurses and nursing-related professionals. Renown is proactively implementing programs to build our pipeline of potential future nurses and keep those already in the field. Stephanie’s generous gift will help the endowment provide programs such as training, scholarships, loan repayment and professional development to increase retention and recruitment of prospective nurses. “As nurses, we are entrusted with our patients’ lives,” said Melodie Osborn, Chief Nurse Executive at Renown Health. “We have the privilege of caring for people in their most vulnerable time and helping those who cannot help themselves. Stephanie’s generous gift to the Nursing Excellence Endowment Fund will help us develop new nurses for the future so we can continue to provide care to those in need for generations to come.” No Stranger to Healthcare Long before she found herself leading the Renown Health Foundation Board, Stephanie learned the ins and outs of healthcare. She graduated from nursing school and became a part-time nurse in a Sioux Falls, South Dakota nursing home while attending Augustana College to obtain a degree in journalism and a minor in theater. As part of her journalism program, Stephanie completed an internship in the public relations department of a Sioux Falls hospital, and that led to her accepting a position as director of public relations at a sister hospital. She later was recruited by Saint Mary's Hospital and moved to Reno to be the director of marketing in 1981. She stayed at Saint Mary's for almost 10 years before starting her own company in pursuit of her passion for marketing strategy. Since launching her brand, Stephanie has grown KPS3 to a multi-million-dollar firm with more than 60 staff members. Somehow, she is still able to find time to serve on six (!) volunteer boards, most of which are dedicated to improving access to better health and human services. “I have a soft spot in my heart for organizations who strive against all odds to help those with the greatest needs,” said Stephanie.

    Why I Give: Yvonne's Story

    Cancer changes everything; it takes, it challenges, and it reshapes lives forever. For Yvonne Murphy, a cancer survivor and development officer at Renown Health, the experience has been profoundly transformative. Recently, Yvonne and her husband, Murray Mackenzie, made a heartfelt donation of $10,000 to support the Conrad Breast Center at the William N. Pennington Cancer Institute—a gift inspired by her own battle and in honor of those who have faced this disease. A Family’s Battle with Cancer Yvonne’s journey with cancer began with the death of her grandmother when she was a teenager, a shock that left a permanent mark on her family. "She was my friend, confidant, and angel," Yvonne recalls. "Losing her changed everything." In the years that followed, nine more of her family members passed away from cancer. These experiences highlighted the harsh reality that cancer invades every aspect of life, bringing grief and uncertainty to so many. For Yvonne, that reality grew even more personal when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer, marking a pivotal moment in her life. A Fight for Her Life During the height of COVID-19, Yvonne noticed blood in her urine, a discovery that sent her rushing to the ER at Renown South Meadows. She received the devastating news: stage one cervical cancer. "When I received my diagnosis, it felt like the world stopped," Yvonne said. "But I knew I couldn't let this define me. I had to fight, not just for myself, but for all the people I've lost." Yvonne faced a grueling course of treatment, undergoing two major surgeries within just 60 days. The first was a hysterectomy, followed by the removal of 32 lymph nodes. Her treatment also included radiation therapy and a challenging recovery, all within a single year. Throughout this intense period, Yvonne drew strength from her faith. "I prayed every day," she said. "And I promised that if I survived, I would dedicate my life to serving others." This promise became her guiding force. It inspired her to make a profound impact through her work at Renown. A Gift of Hope True to her word, Yvonne reached out to the former CEO of Renown in 2021, exactly one year after celebrating her cancer-free milestone. She was determined to contribute in any way possible. This marked the beginning of her career at Renown Health Foundation.  Today, she works as a development officer, partnering with philanthropists, corporations, and fellow employees to raise funds for vital programs and services at Renown, a not-for-profit health system. Yvonne recently had her 18th scan and remains cancer-free, a testament to her strength and perseverance.

    Tariqs Journey of Resilience at Renown Rehab

    Pictured above are members of the interdisciplinary team at Renown Rehabilitation Hospital, representing the diverse array of caregivers who supported Tariq's recovery journey. For Tariq Kuraishy and his wife Melissa, the focus is on his journey and getting back to life as he knew it rather than the stroke he experienced in June 2024, which led him to Renown Regional Medical Center and later to Renown Rehabilitation Hospital (otherwise known as “Renown Rehab”).  From the swift assessment by first responders to the immediate treatment at Renown Emergency Room and the critical care received in Renown's Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Tariq’s journey has been marked by resilience and exceptional support beyond the couple’s expectations. Navigating the First Moments After Stroke Melissa shared how Tariq’s care team’s calm demeanor and expertise eased the initial shock of his diagnosis, treatment and plan of care. For Melissa, staying informed during crucial care discussions was vital. She noted that the team's professionalism and reassurance gave her the confidence to let go of some of the mental and emotional burden she felt during the immediate period after the stroke, allowing her to focus on both her and Tariq's physiological and emotional needs. “I felt very safe being at Renown, knowing that we were being cared for to the greatest extent,” said Melissa.  Rising to His Personalized Rehabilitation Plan Tariq began the Renown Rehab program on June 19 with one goal in mind: to regain 70% of his brain function within 30 days. To achieve this, he spends four to five hours per day participating in physical, occupational, speech and recreational therapies as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program tailored to his specific needs. If that sounds like a rigorous schedule, it's because it is, but Tariq prefers it that way because it means he’s actively working towards regaining his sense of normalcy with his care team alongside him every step of the way. “Unlike other places that might take a more lenient approach, the responsibility for progress not only lies with the Renown Rehab team but also the patient. If you are prepared to do the work, Renown Rehab is prepared to get you there,” Tariq said.   Melissa emphasizes that Renown Rehab provides comprehensive, whole-person care with a variety of innovative, individualized therapies. These therapies keep patients engaged and busy throughout the day, addressing not just the affected areas but also the entire body and mind, ensuring holistic recovery and facilitating progress in unique ways. Activities like catching a ball or putting a ball in a hole help restore function, much like restoring power to a building that has lost electricity. It’s All About the Support and the Team’s Know-How From the moment he arrived, the Renown Rehab team has been continuously assessing Tariq’s abilities and tailoring his rehabilitation plan to propel him to the next level. Melissa, who spends up to 12 hours a day at the facility supporting her husband, highlighted the daily therapeutic sessions as an impressive way the care team evaluates Tariq’s readiness for more challenging tasks. Communication between the couple and Tariq’s team of doctors, nurses, therapists, techs and certified nursing assistants is constant as they actively involve them in decisions. As Tariq put it, they don’t cater to his comfort zone but instead push for progress, understanding it may not always be linear. It’s a true collaboration. “It doesn’t feel like it's being done to us but being done with us,” Melissa said. Looking Ahead Tariq and Melissa feel immensely fortunate to be at Renown Rehabilitation Hospital, which offers an exceptional blend of equipment, technology and expert care teams. “The Rehab facility is a treasure,” Tariq said. “Every member of the care team has displayed the utmost level of professionalism and expertise, and there hasn't been a single person who hasn't shown compassion and competence,” Melissa added. “I feel I will get the most out of being at Renown Rehab. I plan to take full advantage of the services and use every bit of the team’s talent, training and expertise. I will not leave anything on the table,” Tariq said. As Tariq continues to progress, he and Melissa are optimistic about the future. Tariq continues to receive physical, occupational and speech therapy at Renown Rehab. Their journey, marked by determination and strong support from Renown, offers hope to others facing similar challenges.

    Dr. Carilyn Hoffman's Guide to Menopause Medication & Relief

    Women undergo multiple hormonal changes throughout their lives, leading to different physical and emotional experiences. Dr. Carilyn Hoffman, at Renown Women's Health, explains these confusing life stages and helps decode menopause. Perimenopause: Transitioning Towards Menopause Defined as the time "around menopause," perimenopausal symptoms are caused by hormonal fluctuations that occur as the ovarian function declines. Levels of estrogen and progesterone decrease, and follicle stimulating hormone increases. These hormonal fluctuations may cause a range of symptoms including: Irregular or abnormal periods: Initially cycles intervals vary in length by greater than 7 days, then in later stages the interval increases to greater than 60 days between cycles Hot flashes and night sweats: This is the most common symptom and 50-82% of women will have vasomotor symptoms Mood swings and memory problems Anxiety or insomnia Heart palpitations Decreased libido and vaginal dryness Weight gain and thinning hair Increased risk of urinary tract infections Decreased bone density Menopause Menopause is defined as year without a menstrual cycle and marks the timeframe when the ovaries stop making estrogen. This signifies the end of the reproductive years. The average age of menopause is 51; however, the menopausal transition can last about 8 years. This means that women in their late 30’s and 40’s may start to have symptoms of perimenopause. The worst vasomotor symptoms are typically experienced at the one-year mark since the last period. Unfortunately, some women experience symptoms throughout the entire menopausal transition. Postmenopausal After 12 months without a menstrual cycle, a woman is confirmed to be postmenopausal. This is sometimes difficult to define, as women may have had procedures that cause menstrual suppression such as a uterine ablation or hysterectomy or they may still be on contraception. Sometimes, lab work may be recommended to help determine menopausal status. However, due to the broad time period that the menopausal transition occurs and the variations in normal hormone levels throughout a cycle, lab work is not always helpful. Dr. Hoffman explains the importance of thorough counseling for patients seeking to "check their hormone levels." She emphasizes that menopause is diagnosed clinically, focusing more on the individual's symptoms rather than lab values. This approach ensures that patients understand the implications of the test results and the treatment strategy. Menopause Medical Management Medical management of symptoms should be tailored to the individual’s concerns. Abnormal Bleeding: There are a range of medications, IUDs and procedures available if the main concern is irregular or prolonged menstrual bleeding during perimenopause.  Hot Flashes and Night Sweats: Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): HRT is currently the most effective method for relieving vasomotor symptoms. However, it's important to discuss potential risks with a healthcare provider, as HRT can increase your risk of blood clots and breast cancer. If improperly prescribed, it can also increase the risk of uterine cancer. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends the lowest dose for the shortest duration. Low-dose antidepressants: SSRIs/SSNIs may mitigate hot flashes and mood disorders for those who are not candidates or prefer to avoid HRT. Currently, only Paroxetine is FDA-approved for this use.  Fezolinetant: This is a newly FDA-approved non-hormonal medication that works at the brain's level to treat vasomotor symptoms. Gabapentin: This is an anticonvulsant medication that has been shown in several studies to be helpful for vasomotor symptoms, but it is not currently FDA-approved. Genitourinary Symptoms of Menopause:  Vaginal estrogen: Vaginal dryness and pain with intercourse due to thinning vaginal tissue is a common symptom of menopause. Vaginal estrogen is highly effective at decreasing these symptoms and has fewer side effects than systemic HRT. Ospemifene: This is a selective estrogen receptor modulator that is a non-hormonal FDA-approved medication for severe vaginal dryness. Natural Symptom Relief Strategies: Nutrition: Incorporate calcium, vitamin D, and high-quality protein to support bone health and muscle maintenance. There are limited studies on phytoestrogens (found in soy and tofu) and vasomotor symptoms. While the data doesn’t necessarily support that these phytoestrogens relieve symptoms, no detrimental effects were found and these tend to be high quality and healthy proteins. Exercise: Regular physical activity can ease menopausal symptoms and support weight management. Data doesn’t support that this reduces vasomotor symptoms, but it can be helpful in weight management and sleep quality. Beverage choices: Limiting alcohol and caffeine can help decrease the frequency of vasomotor symptoms and may also improve sleep quality. Alternative remedies: One study shows that Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture are effective at relieving vasomotor symptoms. There is not enough evidence to recommend Black Cohosh, and it is associated with liver toxicity in high doses. Studies don’t show that St. John’s Wart or Gingko Balboa are any better than placebo.  Always mention your alternative medical therapies to your provider as some do interact with other prescribed medications. By understanding and recognizing that the symptoms of menopause are real and treatable, women are empowered to manage this transition better and can maintain their well-being and quality of life.     One of the first challenges Renown Rehabilitation Hospital patients face at discharge is entering a vehicle. This task holds significant importance for those on the road to recovery. Now, patients at Renown Rehabilitation Hospital can practice getting into a car before leaving, thanks to a generous donation from the Dolan Auto Group—a Toyota Highlander. This transformative gift was received by Renown Health Foundation last November. It allows therapists to help patients relearn and practice the critical skill of independently entering and exiting a vehicle. For Renown, the Dolan donation enhances our rehabilitation programs, nurturing a brighter and more self-reliant future for those in our care. Real-world practice is invaluable for those recuperating from illness or injury. "The Highlander enables patients to gain confidence in returning home and into the community, fostering independence," said Seth Langevin, Vice President of Neurosciences & Cardiovascular Service Lines at Renown Rehabilitation Hospital. “These opportunities help patients rebuild skills for life beyond the hospital walls,” continued Langevin. Dolan Auto Group's generosity echoes the spirit of community and underscores the power a vehicle can have in shaping lives and advancing healthcare in northern Nevada.     Use This, Not That: 8 Healthy Cooking Swaps

    If you’re looking for an easy way to add a nutritious kick to your favorite brownie, pizza or cream sauce recipe, check out these healthy ingredient substitutions. There’s no doubt about it: People love decadent, creamy and starchy dishes. If you’re prone to avoiding your favorite guilty pleasure because it’s not a healthy choice, there are a few easy, healthy and delicious substitutions you can add to your cooking or baking routine to satisfy your cravings. Here are eight of our favorite healthy substitutions you might have in your kitchen right now: Baking Swaps Avocados for Butter While this might not sound like an appetizing addition, avocado's creamy texture is similar to butter and can easily be added to brownie and cookie recipes. Avocados are high in healthy fats that help to lower cholesterol and are lower in saturated fats. They also can add vitamin E, fiber and potassium to your baked goods. Swap Amount: Substitute 1 cup blended avocado per 1 cup butter. Bananas for Oil Bananas are a tasty option to replace the use of oil in baking recipes. While oil is higher in fat and calories, bananas can provide potassium, fiber, vitamin B6 and all-natural sweetness to your recipe. Do take into account that bananas are higher in sugar and carbohydrates. Swap Amount: Substitute 1 cup of mashed bananas per 1 cup of oil. Beans for Flour You might not typically think of beans as a substitution, but they can add a lot of nutritional benefits to your treats. High in protein, fiber, folate, magnesium and phosphorous, beans are a great substitution for traditional flour in recipes and create a moist and dense texture to your baked goods. Swap Amount: Substitute 1 cup of blended beans (about a 15 ounce can) per 1 cup of traditional flour. Or, Wheat Flour for White Flour If the bean substitution doesn’t appeal to you, try substituting at least half or all of your unbleached white flour for whole wheat flour. Keep in mind for every cup of whole wheat flour you use, add another 1/4 cup of water to your recipe. This will add more fiber, protein, B vitamins, and several minerals for your baking recipe and scrumptious treats. Chia Seeds or Flax Seeds for Eggs This is a great substitution if you're allergic to eggs or have a vegan diet, but still want to enjoy desserts and breads. Chia and flax seeds are high in omega-3 fatty acids and calcium along with fiber, vitamins and minerals to help promote healthy digestion. This substitution will not provide as much protein as an egg would; however, there is less cholesterol and saturated fat. Swap Amount: Combine 1 tablespoon of ground chia or flax seeds mixed with 3 tablespoons of water, stir and let sit for 15 minutes. Equals one whole egg equivalent. Cooking Swaps Nonfat Greek Yogurt for Mayonnaise Making this switch is an easy replacement for sauces and dressings. Nonfat Greek yogurt is significantly lower in fat and calories and higher in protein. With the added protein, you will feel fuller longer throughout the day. Swap Amount: Substitute equal parts nonfat Greek yogurt for mayonnaise. Try mixing it into a cheese sauce or add lemon juice and spices for a creamy salad dressing. Lemon Juice or Vinegar for Salt If you are worried that your food will be bland, try this swap to lower added salt and still enjoy flavor while creating a fresh, tangy twist to the meal. There are a lot of varieties -- red wine, apple cider and balsamic -- each enhancing your dish with a different flavor. Swap Amount: Experiment by using half the amount of vinegar or lemon juice per the amount of salt your recipe calls for. Cauliflower for Pizza Crust Try a new twist on pizza by switching out its carbohydrate dense crust with fresh cauliflower. This substitution is lower in calories, fat, and simple carbohydrates while increasing your vitamin C and vegetable intake for the day. Swap Amount: Add one egg per every head of cauliflower and season with spices to taste, for a medium sized pizza. Or, Mashed Potatoes Preparing a homemade cauliflower pizza crust can be time consuming, so an easier exchange might be to substitute mashed cauliflower for mashed potatoes, which are higher in starches, calories and carbohydrates. Swap Amount:  Boil and puree a medium size head of cauliflower. Add a splash of low fat milk and season to taste. Zucchini or Squash for Spaghetti Another great way to add vegetables to your meals is to exchange ribbons of zucchini or spaghetti squash for spaghetti noodles. This substitution helps to reduce calories and carbohydrates and zucchini is rich in vitamin A. Experiment with different sauces and spices to create a variety of dishes. Swap Amount:  For zucchini ribbons, try using a mandolin or a peeler. When preparing spaghetti squash, cut it in half and lay face down in an oven safe pan. Add 1/2 inch of water to the bottom of the pan for more tender spaghetti strings (optional). Cook for 30 to 45 minutes until tender. Lie the squash face up, letting it slightly cool, and then use a fork to gently pull the squash from the peel, separating into strands. Remember: Some of these substitutions will affect the taste and texture of your recipes, so it is essential to play with the ratios to find the perfect fit for you. Consume a variety of foods, eat treats in moderation, and incorporate frequent physical activity to keep a well balanced, healthy lifestyle.

    Healthy Nevada Project Returning Clinical Results to Participants

    The Healthy Nevada Project – a first-of-its-kind population health study combining genetic, clinical, social and environmental data – has reached another landmark milestone. The study is notifying study participants at risk for familial hypercholesterolemia, BRCA and Lynch syndrome. “I took part in the Healthy Nevada Project to find out my ancestry. I didn’t even realize the test could give me so much information,” says 29-year-old Jordan Stiteler, who was recently diagnosed with familial hypercholesterolemia (also known as FH) through the Healthy Nevada Project. “After my dad passed away suddenly at age 45, I learned I had high cholesterol but I didn’t know it was genetic and I didn’t get an FH diagnosis until last week,” Jordan explains. “I immediately changed my diet, started walking more and doing more cardio. I also set up an appointment with my primary care physician for the first time in a while. I’ve talked with my family and even strangers about testing since my diagnosis. I hope my story will inspire others to test and can save someone’s family from going through the same loss I did.” Healthy Nevada Project Notifying Patients of Familial Hypercholesterolemia Risks Jordan is among the first Healthy Nevada Project participants to receive clinical results from the genetic study led by Renown Institute for Health Innovation (Renown IHI) – a collaboration between Renown and the Desert Research Institute Foundation. This groundbreaking population health study is now reaching out to study participants like Jordan, who asked to be notified of health risks. If study volunteers choose, the project will also provide guidance on treatment and additional testing for family members who may also be at risk. The project is starting with the return of FH risks which is a genetic tie to high cholesterol. Just a few months ago, a paper in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology recommended genetic testing become the standard of care for patients with a definite or probable FH diagnosis. Jordan says she plans to have her young son tested as well. “This is the future of health; not just reacting to sick people, but a coordinated effort between innovative technologies, data-driven researchers, and responsive practitioners to deliver personalized interventions to identify, prevent and treat disease,” says Anthony Slonim, M.D., Dr.PH., FACHE, president and CEO of Renown Health and president of Renown IHI. “As care providers, we often don’t see patients until they’re already sick and that’s a difficult problem. By embracing personal genomics, we can accelerate the ability of researchers to access data and apply those learnings back to our health system sooner.” In the Months Ahead: Notification of BRCA1/2 & Lynch Syndrome Risks The Healthy Nevada Project will start notifying study volunteers at risk for other CDC Tier 1 conditions including hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome (BRCA 1/2 genes) and Lynch syndrome in the months ahead. These conditions are the key focus for the Healthy Nevada Project. The reason: Because early detection and treatment will save lives, and these conditions are some of the most common. “This research allows us to look into cancer, cardiac, respiratory illness and beyond to identify underlying causes, assess real risks and eventually initiate appropriate preventive actions much earlier. Human subject research is often intangible to participants – we are treated as subjects. The Healthy Nevada Project is creating actionable information for our participants while engaging in leading-edge research on health determinants,” said Joseph Grzymski, Ph.D., associate research professor at DRI, principal investigator of the Healthy Nevada Project and chief scientific officer for Renown Health. Landmark Population Health Study Continues to Expand Since launching two years ago, the Healthy Nevada Project has quickly evolved and expanded. The pilot project enrolled 10,000 participants in just 48 hours in September 2016. In March 2018, phase two of project expanded to an additional 40,000 participants with genetic testing partner, Helix. Helix’s genomic sequencing provides participants and researchers greater depth and quality of DNA data. With this, they can gain further insights to improve health. During a recent media roundtable announcing the return of clinical results, the Healthy Nevada Project also announced plans to complete testing of 40,000 people by the end of 2018. This will bring the project’s total enrollment to 50,000 people – approximately 10 percent of northern Nevada’s population. The Healthy Nevada Project hopes to reach more than 250,000 people in its next phase. The ultimate goal is to offer genetic testing to every Nevadan interested in learning more about their genetics and health. Join the Healthy Nevada Project Recruitment for phase two is still open.     Department Spotlight: Transformation Management

    Process improvement, program oversight and performance growth are the three “P’s” that mark the crucial aspects of ensuring everyone within our health system rows in the same direction. The duty of ensuring we transform together under the guidance of strong leadership and clear goals is no easy task – consistently finding performance gaps to close and focusing attention on our many strategic initiatives requires the care and collaboration of team members devoted to continually finding new ways to make Fighting the Good Fight better, brighter and broader. The forefront of innovation and organizational excellence can be found within Renown Health’s Transformation Management Office (TMO). As the heart of program management and strategic business analysis at Renown, the TMO steps up to the plate to ensure our organizational goals resonate through every layer of our health system, from teams on the frontlines to senior leadership. The mastery of these team members lies not only in their abilities to direct resources where they matter most but also in their roles as stewards of our health system’s future.  The Eagle Eyes of Improvement  When it comes to understanding and supporting Renown’s strategic direction, the TMO acts as our eagle eyes in the sky, overseeing the programs and processes that keep our health system running every day, which in turn helps improve the health and well-being of all our patients. The TMO manages three main functions that are vital to our health system’s bottom line:  Leadership Alignment: Aligning organizational goals with management’s plans and the work of the frontline team members, ensuring that everyone is working to achieve the same purpose and partnering with leaders for performance improvement along the way. Program Management: Emphasizing our resources on high-impact strategic initiatives while developing and overseeing 1-3 year roadmaps for all programs at Renown. Strategic Business Analysis: Assisting with closing performance gaps by identifying process improvement opportunities and new capability requirements.  “The TMO is here to ensure alignment between organizational goals (strategy) and the plans of our leaders (projects, improvement initiatives and roadmaps) so that our frontline teams are focused on the right things and receiving the maximum amount of support,” said Jamie Baldemor, Director of Transformation Management. “We are all here to fulfill our purpose for our community; we can do this faster and more effectively when we are rowing in the same direction all together.”  “In this role, no two days are the same,” added Alan Smith, Transformation Manager. “The team is enthusiastic about the work and vigilant about tackling new challenges. There are days when we engage with frontline teams, listening and observing to gain an understanding of a problem to solve. Other days are spent collaborating with department leaders, identifying new projects and working to shepherd ideas through complicated processes and remove barriers. It is easy for us to see the impact of our work where the change happens daily. As a relatively new department, we have been able to quickly understand the strengths of the team and get to work.”  Knowing that ensuring the longevity of our health system heavily involves successful leadership, the TMO’s approach to achieving our organization’s short-term and long-term goals involves closely collaborating with leadership to align growth strategies with support services.  “We engage with operational leadership teams at all levels across the organization,” said Robert Forrest, Manager of Enterprise Portfolio Planning. “Most days, we work alongside leadership teams to understand how they aim to grow their business and then work to identify impacted support services teams. This usually involves understanding how project needs match up with resource availability and how we can execute when resources are not available.”  The TMO is staunchly dedicated to improving patient outcomes. Our health system can always count on this team to find new ways to expand and enhance our clinical impact to meet the healthcare needs of Renown’s service areas – and they do it by being expert collaborators.  “On a daily basis I collaborate with administrative leaders, physician leaders and executives to intake, prioritize and scope projects and ideas,” said Rob Blamire, Enterprise Program Manager. “These projects enhance patient care in neurosciences, cardiology, oncology, children’s health and women’s health. My team is currently working on numerous projects that will expand clinical space and services to support our growing community.”  Amidst their culture of enthusiasm and dedication, each member of this team finds their work deeply satisfying, eagerly anticipating each day full of new challenges to solve. Fueled by a shared passion for Renown’s trajectory that drives their collective efforts, they look forward to the promising horizon of our health system’s future.   “Being a part of the TMO is fulfilling, and I enjoy coming in to work every day,” said Samy Arellano, Enterprise Program Manager. “The people on this team are passionate about where the organization is heading. I am excited for Renown’s future!”  Unique Backgrounds, Exceptional Results  Many teams at Renown draw attraction from a diverse array of professional experiences, and the TMO is no different. No two team members have the same background – a fact that the TMO uses to their advantage to pull from a wide range of expertise in order to optimize our organizational goals.  "I have experience in healthcare settings as an aide, analyst and manager,” said Rob Blamire. “My diverse professional background includes physical therapy, primary care, pediatrics, healthcare consulting and multispecialty settings. I ended up in the Transformation Management Office while seeking work with overlap among Renown divisions. A team member in the TMO is an exciting position to understand and support the strategic direction of Renown.”  For some of these team members, process and program improvement has always been a calling. Being at the forefront of furthering the strategic initiatives for the largest integrated not-for-profit health system in Nevada continues to be an opportunity they embrace daily.  "I am grateful to have started my career in process improvement, then called the Transformational Health Care department, where the team was responsible for the execution of 40+ improvement initiatives each year,” said Alan Smith. “After leadership roles in Emergency Services and Renown Medical Group, I returned to my true passion of process improvement to make an impact on a large scale to improve patient outcomes and experiences, as well as contribute to our future goals as a health system.”  “I began my time here in process improvement and was exposed to the wildly complex nature of our healthcare system,” added Robert Forrest. “I spent four years on the team running Kaizen and rapid process improvement workshop (RPIW) events, piloting and deploying our daily management system, and supporting organization-wide initiatives as needed. From there, I transferred to the Enterprise Project Management Office as a Strategic Business Analyst. In this role, I supported new projects and initiatives by collaborating with Operational Leadership teams and Project Team members to develop the scope of new requests.”  While their backgrounds may differ, one collective goal remains the same among the TMO: help Renown achieve new heights and further its goals, which in turn helps us expand on our mission to make a genuine difference in the health and well-being of our community. The best part? This team gets to do precisely that day in, day out.  "Prior to working at Renown, I worked at the Reno Housing Authority as the Director of IT,” said Samy Arellano. “I led IT initiatives and strategic goals for the agency. The goal was to provide better client experiences through technological innovation. I joined the TMO at Renown because I felt that this team was excited about helping Renown leadership reach organizational strategic goals, and I really loved that part of my role as the Director of IT. Now I get to do that every day!”  As the team weaves their enthusiasm for our health system into their daily work, the TMO’s commitment to realizing Renown’s vision will never waver.     Department Spotlight: Point-of-Care

    When you visit your provider for your annual exam or to address a health concern, or if you’re admitted to the hospital for any reason, lab draws – including blood tests, urine samples and saliva swabs – are common. When it comes to lab draws when you’re sick with a virus, such as strep, flu, RSV or COVID, or routine tests for chronic conditions, such as blood glucose or hemoglobin A1C, the last thing you’d want to do as a patient is wait a long time to get your results back. You’re focused on getting your results, receiving the proper medication and feeling better as soon as possible. Luckily for patients at Renown Health, we have a talented team to meet that need.  Meet the Point-of-Care team at Renown, an important subset of the larger Core Laboratory department. With decades of collective experience in the field and some of the finest point-of-care technology at their fingertips, this team works with our healthcare teams to ensure you have access to fast, accurate test results to help you on a quicker road to recovery.  Pointed Towards Efficient Solutions Point-of-care testing can be defined as exactly how it sounds – lab testing at or near the patient or their care area, otherwise known as “at the point-of-care.” While our clinicians utilize this specialized equipment every day for point-of-care testing on patients, they rely on the Point-of-Care department for training, everyday guidance, quality checks, audits and leadership.   At Renown, Point-of-Care testing is used in nearly every nursing unit across our hospitals and 53 outpatient care locations, including primary care, urgent care, pediatrics and women’s health – alleviating some of the workload of our central lab. Because so many teams rely on this crucial technology and test processes, this team accomplishes a great deal each day, from checking equipment to ensuring test accuracy.  “Our day starts early, with our first team member opening the department at 5 a.m. and circulating on the nursing units to address broken point-of-care equipment issues or supply shortages that could impact patient testing,” said Joni Boury, Lab Program Coordinator. “Once the point-of-care scientists arrive, they will address any charting issues that arose overnight and ensure all test results are correctly charted in Epic. After critical issues are addressed, we visit the testing locations and performing audits to ensure all testing equipment is functioning, clean and being appropriately maintained.”  In order to provide these efficient tests – in minutes! – to patients anxiously awaiting their results, our first step is to make sure our equipment and processes are up-to-code. Point-of-care testing is regulated at both the state and federal levels, and this team never leaves a checkbox unmarked when it comes to testing regulations.  “As a part of the ambulatory side of the Point-of-Care team, I make sure that state and federal licensing is maintained so the practices that perform these tests can continue to perform in-office testing for patients,” said Wende Lane, Clinical Lab Assistant Lead. “I also round in these practices to make sure they are adhering to state and federal guidelines, as well as Renown policies.”  And it’s not just existing equipment that needs oversight – the Point-of-Care department also implements new equipment and processes across Renown. These team members are expert jugglers when it comes to this effort, handling training, collaborating with leaders, recommending the proper placement of equipment and much more.   "Each day, we work on our many deployments scheduled throughout the hospital and outpatient locations,” said Joni Boury. “That work includes meeting with leaders to ensure new spaces are correctly built to accommodate the point-of-care devices, configuring new equipment, training new leaders and device operators and ensuring appropriate ordering and charting of the test results.”  “In being able to perform these tests in the outpatient setting instead of having to send them somewhere else for a test, providers can begin treating their patients within a matter of a few minutes, rather than hours,” added Wende Lane.  For a small-but-mighty team of six employees, the heights this team reaches knows no bounds. They’ve celebrated many achievements and expansions this year, including offering new-and-improved PCR testing across various outpatient practices.  “Our team has had several notable accomplishments over the past year,” said Breanna Van Dyck, Medical Lab Scientist and Lab Program Coordinator. “We successfully rolled out a massive Cepheid PCR testing initiative to over 30 Renown outpatient locations within the community. This expansion significantly improved our testing capacity and accessibility and will help ensure timely and accurate diagnostic tests for respiratory viruses and strep to a broader patient population, including our rural practices.”  By combining cutting-edge technology with compassionate patient care, our Point-of-Care team members are essential to contributing to Renown’s goal of providing efficient, high-quality care tailored to each patient’s individual needs.  Take a Point-of-Care Tour!     Through the Renown Health-UNR Medical School affiliation, the first academic and clinical research enterprise was created in Nevada, making Renown a destination of choice for high quality cutting edge research partnerships. The Renown Research Office supports dozens of clinical trials in a wide variety of specialties, and continues to expand our partnerships across the organization. In addition, our partnership with the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the Nevada Cancer Research Foundation, and the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) provides Renown with access to dozens of open oncology clinical trials, including ground-breaking treatments for many childhood cancers, studies to better understand these diseases, and trials focused around supportive care and survivorship.
