A Token of Appreciation: Renown’s Employee Giving Program

Pictured above from left to right: Jessica Bajwa, Nancy Bell, Laurie Goodman and Troy Fernandez As we approach the holidays and the season of giving, we reflect on the generosity and kindness that our employees here at Renown embody. Since 2007, Renown employees have donated $2,931,018 through Renown’s Employee Giving Program. This program provides our staff with the opportunity to make a difference by funding advanced equipment, research, community health initiatives, professional training and more. Regardless of the dollar amount, every contribution has a meaningful impact and remains entirely within Renown to support our mission. Employees can participate in the program at any time of the year by signing up for recurring payroll deductions or by making a one-time donation of any dollar amount. They can donate to one of Renown’s top priority areas of support or a different fund of their choice.  Meet Jessica, Nancy, Laurie and Troy  Renown employees Jessica Bajwa, Nancy Bell, Laurie Goodman and Troy Fernandez all have their own reasons for participating in the Employee Giving Program, but they all share the same goal: To give back to their community. Jessica Bajwa has been working at Renown for about seven years. She was at an employee event five years ago and found out about the Employee Giving Program through Renown Health Foundation. They explained the different areas she could donate to and how to get signed up. When Jessica looked back on the comforting care and healing her daughter had received at Renown Children’s Hospital, she felt empowered to give back to other children and families staying at Renown, so she enrolled in recurring payroll deductions to donate to Healing Arts. “It’s so easy and convenient to sign up,” said Jessica. “It means a lot to me to give to this area where they provide a healing environment, especially for patients and families at Renown Children’s Hospital – My daughter still has a blanket they gave her when she was there,” Jessica said she likes that the Employee Giving Program allows employees to choose their area of support to donate to and donation amount.   Nancy Bell said she’s proud to give back to Renown after having received a great amount of support from her coworkers during an incredibly difficult time when a family member of hers was being cared for in Renown’s ICU, just three weeks into her employment at Renown. “I had employees from not just my team but also across the organization reaching out to me and checking in to see how I was doing,” said Nancy. Nancy said she was positively impacted by that kind of support through her work family at Renown and decided to start giving back in 2011 by signing up for recurring payroll deductions to donate to the William N. Pennington Cancer Institute – to this day, she is still making donations to this area of support.   When Laurie Goodman began working at Renown in 2013, Renown’s Human Resources team offered her different ways to give back as an employee. “At the time, I was often caring for foster children and seniors,” said Laurie. “My family and I have always wanted to help others in need.” Laurie had been taking care of an elderly woman who was a patient at the old Renown Skilled Nursing Facility and decided to enroll in payroll deductions to donate to this facility. When that facility closed, she received a letter asking which area she wanted to transfer her donations to, and she decided to begin donating to Renown Children’s Hospital to give back to kids in the community. “I’m fortunate for not only my employment at Renown, but my husband’s and daughter’s employment as well. As employees of Renown, we have such great jobs, benefits and opportunities, and I think we should all strive to give back to express our gratitude and appreciation.”  At his employee orientation in 2012, Troy Fernandez heard about Renown’s Employee Giving Program and learned that funds were needed for individuals who needed financial support to pay for healthcare services at Renown. He knew his donations would go to a good cause and signed up for recurring payroll deductions to donate to the Greatest Need Fund. “It feels good to be able to give back to those who are less fortunate than us,” said Troy. “It was very easy to enroll in this program, and I’ve been donating to the same support area ever since.”

A Year We Will Never Forget - COVID-19 at Renown Health

A highlight of the hope and determination, including some of the most remarkable and meaningful milestones, that took place at Renown over the past year. On February 25, 2020, leaders at Renown Health stood up Renown’s Hospital Incident Command System (HICS), which is a standardized system used to organize response personnel and resources, and to manage response operations during emergencies and crises. This precautionary measure was established at Renown as the effects of the novel coronavirus devastated parts of the east coast and other hotspots around the world. While COVID-19 had yet to present itself in Washoe County at this time last year, Renown was prepared and ready for what would come next. “At Renown, our teams practice emergency preparedness 365 days a year,” said Tony Slonim, MD, DrPH, Renown’s President and CEO. “We had been steadfastly watching the impact COVID-19 was having across the world and knew based on our predictive analytics that the virus would impact communities closer to home. Our team took swift action to ensure Renown remained ready and prepared. I am incredibly proud of those who played a role on this emergency and crisis response team for almost a year, for it is their dedication, hard work, and leadership that continues to guide Renown’s ability to provide outstanding care to all in our community through this ongoing pandemic. Their efforts contribute to a safer and healthier Nevada for all of us.”  “2020 was a year no one will forget. For everyone- and for our healthcare workers at Renown, the year presented countless challenges and opportunities. Those of us who choose healthcare as our life’s work answer a true calling to serve others; this field requires a self-less commitment and a tireless dedication to caring for people when they are at their most vulnerable,” said Renown’s Chief of Staff, Sy Johnson. “I applaud the entire HICS team, as well as every Renown physician, nurse and health care hero for their valor, their strength and perseverance in serving our patients and community during these unprecedented times.”  What follows are highlights of some of the most remarkable moments and events that have taken place under the direction of Renown’s Health Incident Command team over the past year.  Temporary Deployable Medical Structure Outside Renown Regional Emergency Department On March 12, 2020, Renown erected a deployable medical facility to serve as a respiratory illness evaluation and screening center for Emergency Room patients at Renown Regional Medical Center. A similar tent was also set up outside the Emergency Room at South Meadows Medical Center. An additional layer of protection, this proactive measure helped to care for people with symptoms of respiratory illness, and to protect patients and staff in the Emergency Department and other areas of the hospital. The tents were dismantled on January 20, 2021 as the number of COVID cases in our community continued to decrease. (See photo here.) Alternate Care Site at Mill Street Parking Structure at Renown Regional As many communities across the nation experienced an increase in COVID-19 cases, including significant surges in hospitalized patients, Renown’s HICS team had the foresight to create an Alternate Care Site (ACS) in the Renown Regional Medical Center Mill Street Parking structure. The ACS served additional hospitalized patients and allowed caregivers to remain on campus and still have access to existing hospital infrastructure such as lab, pharmacy, imaging, food services and other critical services. This solution also supported an efficient level of care escalation and other emergent interventions as needed. After just 10 days of intricate construction, including flooring, electrical infrastructure, lighting, water, technology and wall partitions, the ACS was completed on April 3, 2020 with space to hold up to 1,400 patients. On Nov. 12, 2020, Renown opened the ACS to serve additional hospitalized patients diagnosed with COVID-19 who were clinically stable or improving. Healthcare workers at Renown cared for hundreds of patients in this site. In early Jan. 2021, the remaining patients returned home. The Site remains in place and will reopen if needed. (Alternate Care Site B-Roll.) “LOVE” Makes its Way to Renown On April 16, 2020, during a time of darkness and uncertainty, Artown loaned the “LOVE” sculpture, a one-ton, welded-aluminum artwork created by artist Laura Kimpton and fabricated by Jeff Schomberg to Renown, where it lit up Regional Medical Center’s main entrance on Mill St. The sculpture formerly debuted at Burning Man in 2019. On July 13, 2020, thanks to the support of former board chair and community supporter, Blake Smith and the Keyser Foundation, “LOVE” continues to glow in Renown’s signature purple every evening, shining brightly for patients, employees, visitors and passersby to enjoy. Throughout the pandemic, this sculpture has served as a source of inspiration, hope and positivity for our community. (LOVE sign B-Roll.) Evolving in an Ever-Changing World: Long-Term Remote Work for Renown Employees The COVID-19 pandemic pushed healthcare leaders throughout the world to determine how best to provide care in this ever-changing environment. Leaders in Renown’s Human Resources department evaluated the thoughts and opinions of employees working remotely throughout Renown Health. Due to the positive feedback from employees, including decreased commute times, fewer distractions, improved work-life balance and a reduced carbon footprint, over 700 Renown employees will continue working remotely. Renown Offers In-House COVID Testing In June 2020, the Renown Laboratory team sprang into action to help meet Washoe County residents and businesses’ growing demand for COVID-19 testing. Renown invested in expanded staffing and in-house testing capabilities to be able to swab and process up to 1,000 COVID tests for patients each day, with return of results within hours. Renown’s CEO, Dr. Tony Slonim also collaborated with the Mayor’s COVID-19 Task Force, local faith and community leaders beginning in Oct. of 2020 to address health equity by providing free COVID-19 testing for communities of color. (Lab B-Roll). Renown Administers COVID-19 Vaccines to Health Care Staff and Local Seniors On Dec. 17, 2020, in accordance with national, state and county health guidelines, Renown began to vaccinate its health care workers. Among those receiving the first vaccines were Luis Martinez, a technician on Renown’s Clinical Decision Unit who cared for patients recovering from COVID-19 in the Alternate Care Site field hospital; and many clinical leaders and partners. (Front-Line Staff Vaccination B-Roll.) After several weeks of successful employee and volunteer drive-thru vaccination events, Renown supported the Washoe County Health District and the state in vaccinating Washoe County’s first group of seniors aged 70+. To date, Renown has provided more than 30,000 seniors and health care heroes with their 2 dose vaccinations. (Community Vaccination B-Roll.) An Extraordinary Year of Service As our community experiences fewer COVID-19 hospitalizations and the vaccine is available to more individuals, Renown’s steadfast commitment to keeping our community safe remains the same. “We thank the community for standing by us and helping us all emerge as stronger people with hope for the future. We continue to fight the good fight,” said Dr. Slonim. “With COVID now imbedded into our daily lives, it’s remarkable to reflect on the progress we’ve made and the obstacles we’ve overcome. I will be forever grateful for the precautionary measures, innovation, and acts of service and love implemented by our dedicated team over the past 12 months. We hope by demonstrating our caring values and exhibiting hope and determination, we are inspiring others.”    About Renown Health Renown Health is the region’s largest, locally owned and governed, not-for-profit integrated healthcare network serving Nevada, Lake Tahoe and northeast California. First Student Welcomed to Medical Assistant Program at Renown

As the need for Medical Assistants grows, graduating Hug High Health Science Academy senior, Ana Hernandez Rodriguez, starts NHSE sponsored Renown Medical Assistant apprenticeship at TMCC According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of Medical Assistants is projected to grow 19 percent from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations. The growth of the aging baby-boom population continues to increase demand for preventive medical services here in Nevada and across the country. An increasing number of group medical practices, clinics, and other healthcare facilities also need medical assistants to perform administrative and clinical duties. Medical assistants work mostly in primary care, a steadily growing sector of healthcare. With an eye towards this future, Renown Health proudly accepted its first student, Ana Hernandez Rodriguez, a graduating senior from Procter R. Hug High School’s Health Science Academy CTE program in Washoe County, into its newly created Medical Assistant apprenticeship program. Ana will begin the program as a full-time employee with benefits and start her apprenticeship coursework at Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC). Sponsored by the Nevada System for Higher Education (NSHE), Renown’s Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program was approved by the Nevada State Apprenticeship Council, which was overseen by the Governor’s Office of Workforce Innovation (OWINN), in February. The Renown Medical Assistant Apprenticeship is a one-year competency-based program that includes up to 2,000 hours of On-the-Job training and 193 hours of Related Technical Instruction offered through TMCC. All classroom, clinic and work time is paid. Apprentices work under the supervision of a Medical Assistant, Registered Nurse, or medical provider to assist in responsibilities including escorting the patient from the waiting room to the examination room, taking vital signs, stocking supplies, placing and receiving phone calls including appropriate documentation in the Electronic Medical Record, preparing lab specimens for processing, completing the necessary referral forms, obtaining authorizations and keeping records for referrals. Upon completion of the program, apprentices complete the final exam to become a National Certified Medical Assistant. “NSHE is proud to serve as the apprenticeship program sponsor and create more apprenticeship opportunities like this program throughout Nevada,” said Cheryl Olson, NSHE Apprenticeship Navigator and Director of the Nevada Alliance for Youth Apprenticeship. “We welcome Ana as she joins our extraordinary team of healthcare professionals at Renown,” said Tony Slonim, MD, DrPH, President & CEO of Renown. “We are always looking to support and invest in the next generation of health professionals to address the health needs of our community. Medical Assistants serve an essential role in physician offices, hospitals and other healthcare facilities performing important administrative and clinical responsibilities and assisting in medical care including greeting patients, recording medical histories and vital signs and helping to coordinate care.” According to the US Department of Labor “Projections Central” the demand for Medical Assistants in Nevada will increase by over 25% by 2028, with over 260 job openings available per year. On the importance of apprenticeship programs like Renown’s Medical Assistant program, NSHE Chancellor Melody Rose said, “The Nevada System of Higher Education is committed to promoting more attainable, affordable, and innovative pathways toward successful careers in fields like healthcare, advanced manufacturing, and information technology through apprenticeships. Programs such as the Renown Medical Assistant apprenticeship are changing how we think about accessing higher education and offering true ‘Learn and Earn’ pathways.” Ana’s acceptance into the Medical Assistant apprenticeship program is a proud moment for her soon-to-be alma mater. “Ana has earned this opportunity through hard work and dedication to her studies,” said Melissa Osterhage, who teaches health sciences at Procter Hug High School. “She is a compassionate, caring, and intelligent young woman, and I look forward to seeing everything she will accomplish as she moves forward in a career in the medical field. I couldn’t be more proud of her, and I am grateful she has been awarded this apprenticeship.” Ana graduates from Hug High on June 22 and starts her Medical Assistant apprenticeship program just a few days later on June 29, and is excited for her future. "Being accepted to this opportunity at Renown has been amazing and wonderful. When they told me I was accepted, I was so excited that I cried because I felt so blessed. This is going to help my future in so many ways. It is going to give me the opportunity to work in the medical field. I will start as a Medical Assistant and my goal is to work toward becoming a registered nurse. I took a leap of hope and made it. So, I tell others- believe in yourself and you can accomplish anything in life," she said. Ana is also welcomed to Renown by Michelle Sanchez-Bickley, Chief Human Resources Officer at Renown, who helped coordinate this workforce program. “Healthcare jobs in Nevada represent excellent employment for thousands of Nevadans poised to enter the state’s workforce over the next decade. Opportunities are increasing as we encounter growing demand for health care services at Renown, coupled with population growth, an improving economy, and retirees relocating to the Silver State. Ana and our Medical Assistants are so vital to helping our medical providers care for patients and are critical to the excellent care we provide.” For more information on the next Medical Assistant Apprenticeship program, please email kayla.mcmain@renown.org. Renown Health Awards Grants to Area Organizations Addressing Diversity and Inclusiveness

Funds used to support those addressing demographic diversity and Social Determinants of Health to improve the health of our community. Renown Health, in keeping with its mission, vision and values and the organization’s long-standing commitment to addressing the social determinants of health, announced today it will make available up to $20,000 in fiscal year 2020 to fund projects and organizations aiming to increase the presence and participation of women, racial and ethnic minorities, LBGTQ+ people, people with disabilities, people of low socioeconomic status, and other underrepresented groups. Renown Health strongly prefers proposals that convincingly demonstrate their potential to improve the health and wellness of northern Nevadans. The organization wishes to express its interest in supporting programs that enhance collaboration, health literacy and communication, and enhance cultural competency. “Improving the health of our community is the foundation of our work. Our mission, vision and values are the essence of what makes us Renown. We are committed to fostering an environment of diversity, inclusion and cultural competence where all are appreciated, fully engaged and motivated to make a genuine, positive difference in the health and well-being of the people and communities we serve,” said Tony Slonim, MD, DrPH, Renown’s President & CEO. As the Kaiser Family Foundation noted in recent research: “Researchers found that social factors, including education, racial segregation, social supports, and poverty accounted for over a third of total deaths in the United States in a year.” https://www.ajmc.com/contributor/sophia- bernazzani/2016/05/the-importance-of-considering-the-social-determinants-of-health# Annie Zucker, manager of Community Impact at Renown adds, “Social Determinants of Health have a major impact on health outcomes—especially for the most vulnerable populations. I am proud that Renown, as a not-for-profit healthcare organization, considers social determinants of health to enable more compassionate and comprehensive healthcare for the patients and families we serve.” According to the CDC, it has been well-established that poverty inhibits access to healthy foods and safe neighborhoods, and that higher levels of education influence better health. The impact of such factors on health is defined by Healthy People 2020 as social determinants of health: “Social determinants of health are conditions in the environments in which people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks.” When resources are available to overcome negative social determinants of health, they can have a significant impact on improving population health outcomes. “Through diversity, inclusiveness and cultural competence we are able to better understand and respond to the health needs of our communities. We are committed to continually cultivating an environment of cultural inclusiveness. When you have a culture that acknowledges and engages everyone, the opportunities for personal growth and organizational effectiveness are limitless,” said Hector Boirie, MBA, Chief Strategy Officer. “Renown Health provides access to care with dignity and respect for all. We recognize and respect every human being, regardless of race, creed, gender, age, handicap, national origin or ability to pay. We give competent, considerate and respectful care in a safe setting that fosters a person’s comfort and dignity and is free from all forms of abuse and harassment, including gender identity or gender expression,” says Melinda Mendoza, BSN, JD, CPC, CHC, CHPC, Chief Compliance Officer. “This is a Renown Health patient right and we are proud of our organizational commitment.” Renown Health is also an Equal Opportunity employer. All qualified applicants receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, national origin, ancestry, age, genetic information, disability, or protected veteran status. “I am so pleased to serve as Renown’s Chief Financial Officer. Less than 13% of the CFOs in the US are women. How proud I am to help lead an organization that focuses on attracting talent based on individual competency and kindness, rather than gender, race, religion or sexual orientation,” says Ann Beck. Renown Health strongly prefers proposals totaling approximately $2,500 or less as they anticipate funding 8 organizations. Renown Health has made this additional funding available for fiscal year 2020. It normally funds projects for only 6 months at a time, and Renown welcomes applications for renewal funding in subsequent years. All non-profit 501c3 organizations with offices serving residents of northern Nevada are invited to submit proposals by Thursday, June 25 2020. Renown Health will review proposals and make funding decisions by Monday, June 29, 2020. Renown Health will disburse grant funds by Tuesday, June 30, 2020. As non-profit hospitals, Renown must meet community benefit requirements to qualify for tax- exempt status, this includes funding programs that respond to public health needs and improve overall community health. To submit a ‘Renown supports Diversity & Inclusivity grant proposal,’ fill out the grant proposal submission form. For questions, contact Annie Zucker, manager of Community Impact at azucker@renown.org.     About Renown Health Renown Health is an Equal Opportunity employer. Department Spotlight: Legal

Order in the (healthcare) court! Being a transparent and accountable healthcare organization is in our roots and is a commitment we at Renown Health take seriously. In order to uphold that promise, a lot of legal work must be done behind-the-scenes. Contracts, subpoenas, trials, depositions, arbitrations and mediations, service and provider agreements, immigration processes, powers of attorney – the list goes on.  So, who brings that order to Renown? Answer: Renown’s Legal department. With a small-but-mighty team of attorneys, contract administrators, immigration specialists, paralegals and assistants, these professionals tackle the intricate balance between the law and the care our teams provide every day. Their dedicated work allows our health system to focus on what matters most – bringing healing to our community. Protecting the Protectors The Legal department at Renown serves as the backbone of our health system, ensuring that both patients and employees are protected within the complex web of regulations, standards and more. This team is immensely talented in guarding the integrity of the community-minded care we provide.  No matter what problem comes across their desk, the Legal team will step in to find a solution. In fact, problem-solving is a fundamental part of their everyday work.  “We are a support department; we support the people who do the important hands-on work with our patients,” said Paul Harris, Chief Legal Officer. “Most on the legal team are skilled problem solvers, so we often get questions that are not quintessentially legal but require us to help someone solve the puzzle. It is very gratifying work when we help the greater Renown team address complicated situations.”  Resolution is at the foundation of their role within our health system, so you, as the reader, can probably imagine how busy their day-to-day lives at work get. But never fear – this team thrives on overseeing many different aspects of the law when it comes to the patients and employees at Renown.  “What I love about my job is that every single day I feel like I solve a problem or help a patient, health plan member or internal ‘client’ at the organization,” said Jamie Winter, Deputy Chief Legal Officer. “I also love that every day is different.  On any given day I can be attending a committee meeting either as a member or as the legal advisor, attending an administrative law hearings,  appearing at a mediation or arbitration,  reviewing and negotiating contracts, overseeing litigation in coordination with outside counsel,  assisting with Hometown Health member appeals, assisting the Medical Staff Services team and medical staff leadership and committee chairs, reviewing  powers of attorney, guardianship orders and records requests . No two days are the same, which keeps my work interesting, fun, and exciting!”  “A day in the life of the Legal department is always different,” added Mary Ann Ellis, Associate General Counsel. “We handle many different areas of law, including issues from across all the departments as they arise. I work on drafting, revising, reviewing, negotiating or analyzing contracts, including non-disclosure agreements; business associate agreements; supply chain agreements, and physician or other professional service agreements. I also advise on employment matters and assist in responding to subpoenas or other government requests. I help draft or review different policies across the organization.”  Before Renown brings on any new physician or vendor, there is one key part of the process they all must take part in: contracts. Contract structure, negotiations and signings are all part of the onboarding process. And the Legal team has contracting down to a science.  “I work primarily on independent (physician) contracts; these contracts include call coverage, professional services agreements, medical director agreements and medical staff officer agreements,” added Adam Harris, Staff Attorney. “It is important to have these agreements in place so that our community physicians can legally and compliantly provide patient care."  “I maintain relationships with our community partners around their service contracts which allow them to treat patients at Renown,” added Jackie Johnston, Contract Administrator. “I also oversee our contract management software, working with multiple departments in maintaining a compliant contract structure for all contracts within Renown. I am proud of how we established a new policy around contract management and are assisting departments with onboarding the new system.”  In alignment with our commitment to employing a diverse workforce, Renown excitedly welcomes providers from across the world. This past year, our Human Resources and Legal teams saw a crucial need for a role that focuses exclusively on facilitating the processes for international hires: the Immigration Specialist.  “The Immigration Specialist position at Renown, which is a new role in the organization, is an excellent fit for my professional background and experience,” said Derrick Lacey, Immigration Specialist. “A day in the life involves interfacing with the Renown Medical Group's Provider Recruitment team, HR Operations and other departments which partner on behalf of physicians and nurses who require immigration sponsorship and support. Since joining Renown, I have been able to contribute the necessary technical skills and knowledge required for the role, while taking on the unique challenges and responsibilities associated with expanding Renown's existing footprint in the realm of employment-based immigration sponsorship.”  No matter the need, the Legal team is proud to support our many departments and has an open-door policy for any employee to come to them with any concern. “I am proud that people feel empowered to come to the Legal department and trust we will partner with them to find solutions to any problems,” said Mary Ann Ellis. “We work closely with various leaders on a regular basis to check in and make sure we meet their needs and keep everyone on track on meeting various contracting deadlines or other needs.”  Even if you don’t physically see the Legal team every day, the work they do is incredibly important to keep our health system running. After all, there is no order without law.  “The work we do in the Legal department may not always be front and center, but it’s critical to ensuring that patient care is provided safely, ethically and efficiently,” said Michelle Gibbons, Paralegal. “By ensuring compliance with laws, protecting patient privacy, mitigating risks and facilitating access to care, we create a legal framework that allows clinical teams to focus on what they do best: providing outstanding patient care.”  The Journey to Healthcare Law  Employment law, civil rights law, family law, criminal law, real estate law, corporate law...there are many fields of law an aspiring legal professional can delve into. So, what inspired our Legal department employees to enter into healthcare law?  Let’s hear from a few of these team members on how and why they ended up in this intense-yet-rewarding career field:  “I was a political science major as an undergraduate student in Washington, DC, and, during that time, I worked on Capitol Hill for a Nevada Senator and Nevada Governor. The natural progression for many political science students is to go to law school and I did just that. After law school, I worked as a litigator for 11 years and then came to Renown. Although I joined Renown after becoming an attorney, I started with Renown as the Hometown Health Compliance Officer to not only learn compliance, a fast-growing area at the time, but to also “get my foot in the door” in hopes of ultimately becoming an in-house attorney for Renown. Years later, I took a position as in-house counsel for the health plan and later moved to the larger Renown Health Legal Department to broaden my healthcare law practice.” - Jamie Winter “My life has always revolved around the legal field. My father was a District Judge in Douglas County for 25 years. He is currently serving as the Chief Justice of the Appellate Court of Nevada. My childhood involved campaigning and spending many hours at the Courthouse with my dad. It was a natural progression for me into the field of law after graduating college.” - Michelle Gibbons “My career background is in the area of global mobility, which involves the management of international employee populations and their movements, including immigration, relocation logistics, and international tax requirements, processes and compliance matters." - Derrick Lacey “I went to school for Retail Merchandising to further my career with a major retailer in Minnesota. After transferring to Reno and working in retail for many years, I wanted to explore new and rewarding challenges. I found the opportunity in the Renown Legal Department where I am now assisting in managing contracts and communicating with multiple providers to assist them with compliance metrics and payments.” - Jackie Johnston “Before attending law school, I worked in healthcare. It was a natural transition for me to apply my education in an industry with which I was already familiar, and Renown was an easy choice as the top hospital in the area.” - Adam Harris Our Legal team enjoys a reputation of being powerful yet personable in the office, the hospital and the courtroom. Many departments across our health system know they can rely on this team to provide the best possible solutions for them.  “I am most proud of growing my team to better assist the organization in multiple areas such as immigration, litigation and contract negotiation management,” said Bekah Riley, Manager of Legal Department & Board Liaison. “We have established a department recognized for its accessibility to other leaders and its role as problem solvers.”  “Our team's biggest accomplishments are generally associated with successful outcomes in litigation, or long-running projects that have, after much effort, been completed,” added Adam Harris.  As the old saying states, “the proof is in the pudding.” Our Legal team members are excited to share a few notable success stories of which they played a large role in.  "One success story that comes to mind is when the lab was being overwhelmed by law enforcement demands for legal blood draws and the resulting subpoenas,” said Mary Ann Ellis. “We worked with the district attorney, law enforcement and city leadership to develop some action plans for reducing that burden. Eventually, many of the law enforcement agencies reached a solution to get legal blood draws done by an outside organization, helping to reduce the burden on our teams. The district attorneys also agreed to various methods to try to make physical appearances in court less onerous.”  “As the newest member of the Legal team, I recently learned that an immigration sponsorship project I was asked to lead on my third day at Renown, which involved consulting on case strategy, as well as authorship of enhanced immigration support letter documentation, had been a resounding success,” added Derrick Lacey.  “We were able to make a big push on managing the many contracts entered into by the organization and help to maintain access and accountability,” added Paul Harris.  All in all, our Legal team’s commitment to legal excellence – from the start of their careers to today – not only safeguards the interests of our health system but also fosters an environment where quality of care can thrive.  “We are a dedicated team working behind the scenes to enhance the organization's overall productivity and support its strategic vision for the future,” said Bekah Riley. It’s All About the People At Renown, all our teams are committed to leaving a positive impact on our patients, fellow team members and community. The Legal department is no different. In a world where the intensities of both the healthcare space and legal space collide, they find support and solidarity in each other.  “I wanted to work somewhere that I felt I could make a difference in the community,” said Mary Ann Ellis. “Instead of working in a field that can traditionally be very adversarial, at Renown, I can use my skills in collaborative and positive ways to help the organization and the people in it. What keeps me here are the amazing people I get to work with every day. We have a small team that genuinely enjoys working together and have become friends over the years.”  Their commitment to giving back to their community aligned with Renown’s same commitment and was a defining reason for why they joined Team Renown. When values align, everything else can fall into the right place.  “I chose to work for Renown because of its reputation in the community and my desire to work as in-house counsel at a respected, local organization,” said Jamie Winter. “My mom worked as a nurse at Renown for many years and it is wonderful to now be working for the same organization where my mom provided patient care. What keeps me here is my amazing team and the people I work with throughout the organization. The individuals on my small legal team are very collaborative and supportive of one another. We work closely with the Risk, Compliance, and Payer Contracting teams, and we all work really well together.”  “I was drawn to Renown Health because of its strong commitment to providing high-quality, compassionate care to the community,” added Michelle Gibbons. “I really resonate with the organization's mission to improve the health and well-being of northern Nevada and beyond. Renown provides a collaborative and supportive work environment where I feel encouraged to grow and continue learning. The leadership and my colleagues are invested in my development, and there's a culture of teamwork that makes coming to work each day a positive experience.”  There is never a dull moment in healthcare – there is always something new to explore and discover. Our Legal team not only finds their work rewarding, but they also find it incredibly exciting.  “I had an opportunity early in my career to work with healthcare clients and professionals, and in my experience, there is not a more exciting job than sorting through the complexities of healthcare and hospital legal work,” said Paul Harris. “It's challenging every day, but I've been able to work with smart, innovative and motivated people. Renown has a great culture and working with dedicated people keeps me excited about my work here and Renown's future.”  Behind-the-scenes and above-the-standard, our Legal department consistently blows expectations out of the water. Anyone who walks through Renown’s doors can rest assured they are in the best of hands with this best-in-class team.  “We are a dedicated team working behind the scenes to enhance the organization's overall productivity and support its strategic vision for the future,” closes Bekah Riley.

A One Year Reflection: Thousands of Health Care Workers and Northern Nevadans Vaccinated Against COVID-19, Offering a Beacon of Hope This Holiday Season

The best protection continues to be getting a COVID-19 vaccine and booster, wearing a mask, staying at least 6 feet away from others, avoiding crowds, and washing your hands often. For the thousands of physicians and health care workers of Renown Health, this week is etched into the pandemic timeline as the start date of a nationwide wave that signaled the first vaccinations against COVID-19 and a beacon of hope for the future. A year ago, the nation’s health care systems in communities across the U.S. first began vaccinating physicians and health care workers caring for patients with COVID-19, and thousands received their first vaccine. One year ago, Renown Health, the Washoe County Health District (WCHD), the state and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) began to distribute the initially available, limited supplies of the COVID-19 vaccines in Washoe County. Media representatives viewed the first healthcare workers as they obtained their first dose of the life-saving vaccines. Luis Martinez, first health care worker vaccinated, now plans to attend medical school Luis Martinez, who served on the front-line of the pandemic at Renown Regional Medical Center, received the first of his Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine a year ago this week, after it received emergency use authorization from the Food and Drug Administration. He received the second and final vaccination in the series 21 days later. Luis has been at Renown since 2016, where he started as a phlebotomist and has been encouraged to advance his career in the medical field. He works as a technician on Renown’s Clinical Decision Unit — a short stay unit within the hospital for people who need clinical care, but do not need admittance to the hospital. Luis worked with patients and clinicians in the Clinical Decision Unit for a year before requesting to work in Renown’s Alternate Care Site, built in the Mill Street parking structure as a place to care for patients recovering from COVID-19 before they returned home. Today, Luis is working to fulfill his dreams of becoming a doctor. He took the Medical College Admission Test® earlier this year, interviewed virtually and applied to 24 medical schools. Luis has shadowed physicians in a number of medical fields, including internal medicine, emergency medicine, cardiology and orthopedics, and would be thrilled to train in any one of those areas. As for medical school, Luis was excited to hear about Renown’s new clinical affiliation with the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med). He is enthusiastic about becoming part of the next generation of Nevada's health care professionals, and his first choice is UNR Med. He expects an admission decision by UNR Med this winter. If that doesn’t work out, he says, he has an interview with leaders at the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV in January. Luis is bilingual and understands that Nevada continues to face a shortage of physicians and affordable medical care. He volunteers with CARE Chest of Sierra Nevada, a non-profit organization that provides free medical equipment, supplies, and prescription assistance to underserved populations when he is not working at Renown. His dream is to graduate medical school and stay in the community to provide medical care as a physician. Luis knows the importance of excellent medical care, and the importance of the vaccines against COVID-19. Last October, Luis turned 33 and contracted COVID-19 after a family birthday party. Because of his experience, his interest in medicine and his research, Luis obtained his COVID-19 vaccines- and his booster, and is pleased that everyone in his family is triple vaccinated too. He says they are all feeling well and looking forward to being together at the holidays. “As we celebrate this holiday season, we give thanks for Luis and the thousands of health care heroes who have been fighting this pandemic with care and compassion; continuing to safely screen, diagnose, care for and vaccinate thousands of employees and community members,” said Tony Slonim, MD, DrPH, President & CEO of Renown Health. “It has been an honor to assist local and statewide health partners in the herculean vaccination effort. Over the past year, Renown’s vaccine team administered more than 58,000 dose 1 and dose 2 vaccinations to Nevadans ages five and older. We continue to work closely with our community health leaders and are always ready to assist. We are proud to be part of the solution for our community and pleased to have made a genuine difference in the health and well-being of others throughout this unprecedented time in our history.” Renown continues to use current local and national data, analytics, and public data sets for predictive modeling in service to our community. When there is heightened concern around an illness, enhanced infection prevention strategies are in place to ensure Renown is ready with the appropriate supplies and alternate plans should the need arise. Vaccination is still the best protection against Omicron and Coronavirus Today also marks a dark new milestone for Washoe County — over 1,010 confirmed COVID-19 deaths, and over 70,549 total cases in our population of nearly 500,000. The bright spot is that over 65,714 people have recovered in Washoe County, although many still grapple with long-term effects of the illness. The world and the U.S., continue to experience an increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations with the highly contagious Omicron variant, which now accounts for 50 percent of the coronavirus cases in parts of the country. In some areas, there is a significant stress on the hospital system, particularly where vaccination rates are low. “The most important action you can take to protect yourself from the Delta and Omicron strains and the COVID-19 virus is to get fully vaccinated,” says Susan Lee, DO, MBA, Chief Medical Officer, Acute Care. “The COVID 19 virus and its related strains are preventable and controllable through safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines, which are free and now widely available in our area. The CDC recommends all people 5 years and older be vaccinated against COVID-19. Data shows that nearly all COVID-19 deaths are now occurring among unvaccinated individuals.” A list of providers in our area offering vaccines is available at vaccines.gov.” “The best protection from COVID-19 has been a combination of getting a COVID-19 vaccine, wearing a mask, staying at least 6 feet away from others, avoiding crowds, and washing your hands often,” says Amy McCombs, MSN, RN, CCRN, CNML, vice president of Quality for Acute Services for Renown, and a champion of the vaccination effort for Renown. “No one tool alone will stop this pandemic; it will take a combination of all of us using all of these efforts to fight the spread of this virus, especially through the holidays.” “Vaccinations have been a game-changer in terms of improving the health of our community,” said Rahul Mediwala, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Health Services. "Given the demands of this COVID-19 pandemic, we have been pleased to help in the fight by providing vaccinations. Our goal a year ago, was that all Renown physicians; employees and their family members; and all Hometown Health members and Renown patients interested in receiving the vaccine would have an opportunity to be vaccinated, we are excited to help make that dream a reality for all.” The COVID-19 vaccine is now mandatory for all Renown employees in an effort to protect those who are ill and physically vulnerable, and ensure a safe environment for patients and health care workers. Renown is covering all costs of the vaccine, and it is being offered free of charge to employees. As of today, 97% percent of all 6,750 Renown Health employees are vaccinated or have an approved exemption or deferral. “This year was a year no one will forget. For everyone- and for our health care workers at Renown, the year presented countless challenges and opportunities. Those of us who choose healthcare as our life’s work answer a true calling to serve others; this field requires a self-less commitment and a tireless dedication to caring for people when they are at their most vulnerable,” said Renown’s Chief of Staff, Sy Johnson, MBA. “I applaud the entire team- every physician, nurse and health care hero for their valor, their strength and perseverance in serving our patients and community during these unprecedented times.” What follows are highlights of some of the most remarkable moments and events that have taken place at Renown Health over the past year in relation to the response to COVID-19. The tents were dismantled on January 20, 2021. (See photo here.) Alternate Care Site at Mill Street Parking Structure at Renown Regional As many communities across the nation experienced an increase in COVID-19 cases, including significant surges in hospitalized patients, Renown’s leadership had the foresight to create an Alternate Care Site (ACS) in the Renown Regional Medical Center Mill Street Parking structure. The Site has been decommissioned and leaders expect the area to be available for additional parking later this winter. (Alternate Care Site B-Roll.) Renown invests in Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) ‘Hospital at Home’ Monitoring Systems Appropriate patients (including those recovering from COVID-19) are now offered a telehealth solution using wearable, continuous pulse oximetry, and the convenience of being in their own homes, with the confidence and security of knowing that Renown clinical staff are closely monitoring their health data through the Renown Transfer and Operations Center, and regularly communicating with them through their recovery process. The Renown Transfer and Operations Center spans 6,000 square feet, and is one of the largest centers of its kind in the nation, equipped with 28 high-definition dashboards on the front wall, two in the center of the room and four hanging monitors toward the back. Large plasma screens display important metrics such as patient vital signs, bed availability, facility capacity, staffing, technology and more. Registered Nurses and dispatchers continuously monitor activity around the clock, across Renown’s 100,000 square mile service area, 100+ locations and partner facilities to make the best decisions for patients, providers and care teams. “LOVE” Makes its Way to Renown On April 16, 2020, during a time of darkness and uncertainty, Artown loaned the “LOVE” sculpture, a one-ton, welded-aluminum artwork created by artist Laura Kimpton and fabricated by Jeff Schomberg to Renown, where it lit up Regional Medical Center’s main entrance on Mill St. (LOVE sign B-Roll.) When Words Fail, Art Speaks Recognizing art’s powerful healing capabilities, Renown collaborated with prominent artist and fine art photographer, Anicia Beckwith, to immortalize the many battles fought against and amidst COVID-19 within the healthcare system’s walls. Beckwith captured portrait images of Renown caregivers, patients and their loved ones, showing raw and touching scenes from the COVID Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Departments, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Wilbur D. May Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and the Alternate Care Site field hospital. A group of Renown caregivers hold a COVID patient’s hand. Tears well up in their eyes as the patient takes his last breath. Care providers respond to a patient’s only request – a facial shave. The man beams at the sight of his freshly groomed face, and is visibly touched by the tender care he received to make it happen. Lupe, an environmental services worker, takes special care in her efforts to clean and sanitize patient rooms—a craft she has perfected and taken pride in for the 25+ years she’s worked at Renown. These are just a few of the captivating moments Beckwith illustrates through her art. Beckwith’s full photo gallery of images from Renown are located here; and downloadable visual assets are available here. Evolving in an Ever-Changing World: Long-Term Remote Work for Renown Employees The COVID-19 pandemic pushed healthcare leaders throughout the world to determine how best to provide care in this ever-changing environment. An Extraordinary Year of Service Renown’s leadership remains steadfast commitment to keeping our community safe. I will be forever grateful for the precautionary measures, innovation, and acts of service and love implemented by our dedicated team over the past two years. We hope by demonstrating our caring values and exhibiting hope and determination, we are inspiring others.” Stay Up-to-date on COVID-19 Renown Health is prepared to safely screen, diagnose and care for patients with respiratory illness, including COVID-19.
