    Five Tips for Maintaining Your Mental Health While Job Hunting

    It is no secret that looking for a new job can be stressful and overwhelming. Yet a record number of Americans are quitting their jobs to look for new opportunities, a trend also known as the “Great Resignation.” While there are many reasons why someone might be on the hunt for new work, it’s important for all job hunters to check in with their mental health regardless of their job hunting circumstances. To learn more about maintaining your mental health while looking for a new job, we spoke to Dr. Mavis Major, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Behavioral Health Therapist at Renown Health. 1. Identify Goals When beginning your job-hunting journey, your first step should be to make a plan that focuses on quality over quantity. Make lists of companies you would like to work for and, if you’re looking to change fields or industries, make a list of careers that interest you. At this stage in the process, it’s also important to determine what salary range you’re looking for, what type of work environment you want (in-person, remote or hybrid) and understand what benefits are important to you. Identifying goals makes it easier to narrow down the list of jobs you apply for so you can produce quality applications rather than frantically applying for jobs without putting thought into the process. 2. Set Boundaries It does not matter if you are working full-time while applying for jobs or if applying is your job right now; it can be easy to get lost in the stress of it all. For that reason, it is essential to set intentional boundaries throughout the process. This can look like scheduling days that you fully take off from the job search or going for a walk before a big interview to clear your head. Setting boundaries will make you more productive overall and hopefully help you get your mind off the process. 3. Ask For Help Do not try and tackle this undertaking on your own. Once you have identified goals (see tip #1) make lists of people you know within those industries, and do not be afraid to reach out. Of course, never be afraid to reach out to a mental health professional to talk through why this process might be making you feel anxious. Talking to someone who is not your friend or family can give you a different perspective.

    Planning Your Care at Renown Your care is a team effort, combining the skill and expertise of doctors, nurses, and other support staff who specialize in cancer diagnosis and treatment. Medical Geneticists diagnose cancer through genetic counseling. Gynecologic Oncologists treat cancers of the female reproductive system. These specialists meet to discuss your care plan and coordinate to make sure you’re receiving proven evidence-based care.   Center of Excellence A Center of Excellence is recognized for having a multidisciplinary, multispecialty team that provides leadership in research, training and best practices. Renown has three Centers of Excellence that focus on site-specific cancers. These include: Breast Cancer Gastrointestinal Cancer (colon, rectum, liver, pancreas, and stomach) Thoracic Cancer (lung and esophagus) These teams regularly meet to develop and update clinical guidelines, identify quality initiatives, evaluate clinical trials, and assess new technology and processes.   Cancer Conferences (Tumor Boards) Multidisciplinary, multispecialty cancer conferences (also called tumor boards) allow cancer specialists, genetic specialists, nurse navigators, nurses, social workers, dietitians, physical therapy specialists, and other providers the opportunity to review new and open cancer cases together and provide expertise from several different viewpoints. This collaboration allows them to develop a comprehensive treatment plan for each patient early in diagnosis or changes to a patient’s clinical status.   Who is my point of contact?     Managing Anxiety Around School Violence

    Reviewed by Dr. Takesha Cooper, MD, MS, FAPA, Chair, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Professor of Psychiatry at University of Nevada Reno School of Medicine, Chief of Behavioral Health at Renown Health Sometimes it feels like every time you turn on the news, there is a new report about violence in our schools. Instead of being able to focus on the typical youth growing pains of learning test-taking skills, dealing with physical body changes, navigating friendships and dating and figuring out grades and routines, our children instead must prepare to deal with active shooter incidents, bullying, gang presence and hate crimes. These are heavy weights for children to bear and simply preparing for the possibility of such events can affect their mental health.  As adults, it’s important to recognize when our children are struggling with anxiety, and to equip them with healthy tools and resources to help manage it.  How to recognize signs of anxiety in children Anxiety in children can present itself in several different ways, depending on the child. Oftentimes, younger children will suffer from actual physical symptoms. They may wake up with a stomachache or headache, or they may often feel tired or irritable. In pre-teens and teens, anxiety can take the form of behavioral changes. They may withdraw from social connections and activities or have trouble sleeping or eating.  As a parent, it may be difficult to know what to do when you see your child struggling with anxiety over school violence. How can you help your child when you are trying to figure out the same answers for yourself? You should know, however, that one of the best things you can do for your child is to simply be there for them. Anxiety tries to convince us that we are alone in our feelings, creating a sense of isolation, guilt and shame. A hug, reassurance and open conversation can provide the comfort your child needs during times of anxiety. How to talk to children about school violence Some important things to remember when talking to your children about school violence are: 1. Present the facts: Many times, children receive information about school violence from unreputable sources. Social media, peers and even family members are not always the most accurate sources of data and facts. Take the time to confirm the main details to stop wild theories and accusations in their tracks. 2. Provide Reassurance: It’s okay to let your children know when you are sad or scared about school violence, but you should do so in an age-appropriate manner and follow up with honest parental reassurance. Keep your explanations of the violent incident short and tailored to the age of the child. Acknowledge their feelings and the current situation but be sure to remind them that there are rules, laws and people in place to protect them, should that protection ever be needed. You can empathize with their anxious thoughts and feelings but also remind them that you are there to take care of them and that it is not their responsibility as a child to worry about school violence. 3. Promote Open Communication: Don’t be afraid to have complicated conversations with your children. They are usually able to process more than adults give them credit for. Find opportunities to have one on one time with your child and guide the discussion towards their anxious thoughts and feelings. Actively listen and validate their feelings without escalating fear and remind them that you are a safe and trusted resource who will not dismiss or judge their feelings but promises to be there as a support system. 4. Prepare with the Necessary Tools: Help teach your children coping mechanisms such as deep breathing, yoga, mindfulness or journaling. They can also learn to process their thoughts through physical outlets such as exercise, sports or hobbies to help foster a sense of control and normalcy. 5. Practice Safety Routines: While it can be sad to acknowledge that bad things happen in the world, it can be empowering for children to learn that there are sometimes things they can do to help in a challenging situation. You can discuss safety measures at school and remind them of teachers, staff and first responders who are available to help. Additionally, some children find that role-playing emergency protocols can help them feel prepared and powerful. 6. Protect Their Media Intake: In today’s world, news and information are available 24/7, coming to us from numerous media platforms. For adults, this constant stream of content can feel overwhelming, and for children, it can be even more distressing—especially during times of crisis. Children may struggle to process the information they have been exposed to, and they may lack the ability to distinguish between factual reporting and sensationalism. This constant influx of bad news can take a toll on their mental health, and they may not even recognize that they’re feeling stressed. Limiting their media exposure is an important step in caring for their emotional well-being.  Take Care of Yourself Each time you fly on an airplane, the flight attendants tell you to “put your oxygen mask on first before helping others.” This is important because, in order to think clearly and be helpful to others in need, you have to be able to breathe and function on your own. This adage also rings true when it comes to helping your children manage their anxiety. You must take care of yourself and manage your own fears and stress so that you can effectively provide guidance and support to your children. Remembering to eat properly, exercise, get enough sleep and find strategies to manage your own mental health are crucial to you being the best you can be, so that you can provide comfort to your child and advocate for their health and wellbeing. When to Seek Professional Help Remember that it’s okay to ask for help. If you find that you or your child are struggling with depression, anxious thoughts, persistent fears, loss of appetite, irritability, lack of desire to engage in life activities or with loved ones or other signs of distress, please reach out for professional help. Counseling, support groups and therapy with a licensed mental health professional are all effective ways to cope with these emotions and serve as a helpful reminder that no one has to face them alone.     Department Spotlight: Acute Care Rehab Therapy

    Being admitted to the hospital is never easy. Being admitted for a traumatic injury can be even harder. Whether it's learning how to walk again or powering through a new speech therapy routine, recovering from an injury that may affect the course of your life can be daunting.  But it doesn’t have to be, thanks to the Acute Care Rehab Therapy team at Renown Health.  The smiling faces of the Acute Care Rehab Therapy team at both Renown Regional Medical Center and Renown South Meadows Medical Center will make you see that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Your dedicated physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech language pathologists are here to serve you and place you back on the right path to recovery and function.  The Role of Acute Inpatient Therapy  The Acute Care Rehab Therapy team comes in at a critical juncture in a patient’s care process after hospital admission. As one of the primary rehabilitation partners on a care team, these dedicated therapists are here to maximize every patient’s safe and independent living before they set off back home – all while reducing the risk of hospital readmission.  “As physical therapists, we address musculoskeletal deficits and assess a patient’s current function after acute injury or illness from their baseline and develop a plan for functional recovery,” said Kristie Eide-Hughes, Physical Therapist at Renown Regional. “We also use our clinical expertise to assist with the discharge process and make sure each patient has the best durable medical equipment the first time around, removing the guesswork.”   “On the occupational therapy side, we work with patients to facilitate their independence with basic life skills, such as dressing, bathing and using the restroom,” added Jeanne Clinesmith, Occupational Therapist at Renown Regional.  “In the pediatric setting, we help babies and kids get back to what they were doing before they came into the hospital,” continued Rhonda Yeager, Pediatric Occupational Therapist at Renown Regional. “In the NICU specifically, we support the development of babies, trying to prevent problems from worsening. It’s nice to be a source of positivity in an otherwise intimidating situation.”  The role of therapy in this setting reaches all ages, from babies in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to adults approaching end-of-life care. Every therapeutic approach is tailored specifically to each patient.  “Therapy is more of a habilitative approach for infants in the NICU, while it is more of a rehabilitative approach for kids and adults following injury or illness,” said Sara Carolla, Physical Therapist at Renown Regional.   Each team member in the Acute Care Rehab Therapy department is dedicated to each patient, helping them make progress from start to finish and giving them the tools to succeed along the way.  “I enjoy the variety of the patients we get to see and the ability to see them make gains from the wonderful treatment they get in the hospital from my team,” said Kelly Schwarz, Occupational Therapist at Renown South Meadows.  “We provide education as each patient’s acute issues evolve,” added Nicole Leeton, Speech Language Pathologist at Renown Regional. “One of my favorite parts of my work is the patient and family education aspect, and that includes other healthcare provider education as well. It’s a moving picture.”  Moreover, every team member gives each patient tools to learn how to be themselves again and empowers them to continue striving for the best possible result of their therapy  “We get the opportunity to make a person’s bad experience in life better even by spending one session with them, giving them the keys to unlock something that they didn’t think they had the ability to do,” said Dana Robinson, Occupational Therapist at Renown Regional.  On the Road to Independence  Our dedicated therapists in the Acute Care Rehab Therapy team set the stage for a patient’s recovery process after trauma, showing them their potential for independence. With a multitude of patients coming into the hospital with many degrees of medical complexity, each day is different while the end goal is always the same: to optimize function as early as possible while overcoming any barriers and paving the way for a comfortable and effective quality of life.  “Early intervention is a big piece,” said Nicole Leeton. “Us seeing patients early can get them recovered and independent more quickly and help prevent future illness and injuries. For example, in speech therapy, getting in early and facilitating communication skills for patients with impaired speech can make a huge difference.”  Acute Care Rehab therapists dig deeply to see the whole picture of each patient’s situation to foster their independence – their history, social skills, support system and more.  “Sometimes, we are the difference between independence and dependence,” said Dana Robinson. “We are the eyes and ears because we have so much time with the patients. Our team is extremely collaborative and develops a great rapport with patients, so they feel comfortable telling us everything going on with them.”  “For kids, we teach parents ways they can help their kids by setting up their homes and the equipment they need to succeed,” added Rhonda Yeager.  According to the team, one of the biggest keys to independence is repetition. A continual flow of getting up and trying again is crucial for recovery.  “Repetition helps people regain their quality of life back sooner and control their recovery process,” said Megan Hough, Physical Therapist at Renown Health.  “Helping people continue to get stronger and more independent makes my job so rewarding,” added Sam Brown, Physical Therapist at Renown Regional.  Knowing that they have made a difference and help shape a patient’s overall development inspires each therapist to never give up, regardless of how difficult an injury presents. There is no set schedule for recovery, and the therapists are always in the patient’s corner.  “This team has the most passionate, caring and dedicated individuals that I know,” said Kendra Webber, Manager of Acute Inpatient Rehab Therapy Services at Renown Regional. They give 110 percent to every patient every time to ensure they have what they need to regain function and independence.”  “By tailoring therapy to the individual, the bounds are virtually limitless for what we can accomplish,” added Dana Robinson.  It Takes a Village  Since acute inpatient therapy is never a one-size-fits-all approach, it truly takes a village for this team to move the mountains they do for patients every day. These teams are fact-finding masters, gathering all the necessary information from the patient, their family and their care team to figure out their precise needs.  “We are a consistent presence for our patients, identifying a lot of different needs and meeting those needs to help patients grow in their treatment process,” said Kelly Schwarz. “By collaborating with each patient’s diverse care team, we are able to employ the clinical judgment to help patients overcome physical, emotional and environmental struggles and set them up with the proper resources once they leave our setting.”  “Our team has steady communication with physicians, nurses, acute care technicians, respiratory staff, physician assistants, case managers and more to ensure the best possible care,” added Jet Manzi, Physical Therapist at Renown Regional.  Constant communication and collaboration are also necessary beyond the acute treatment process. These skills are vital in order to facilitate discharge planning, and the Acute Care Rehab therapists are an essential resource in the discharge process alongside our Hospital Care Management team.  “Often times, a patient’s family needs a lot of guidance in helping their loved ones determine the next level, and we help them navigate those steps and the resources available to them,” said Mark Stumpf, Occupational Therapist at Renown Regional. “And it’s all a team effort.”  “Our therapists are the most committed, generous, hardworking people,” added Courtney Phillips-Shoda, Supervisor of Rehab Therapy Services at Renown Regional. “Despite being short-staffed, we come to work every single day and give everything to our patients.     A First-Hand Account of a Renown Health Kidney Transplant Evaluation Experience

    When Angela Seagraves was told she had kidney disease at the young age of 30-something, her health became even more center stage. After many unsuccessful attempts at getting care out-of-state in hopes of a transplant, the Renown Patient Access Representative would experience a “dream come true” with the establishment of the Renown Transplant Institute, Reno’s first-ever kidney transplant program. Angela tried many things to keep her kidneys in check after her diagnosis. However, getting COVID-19 four times would be what would accelerate her into stage five kidney failure by March 2023. With her kidneys operating at 12%, she began dialysis in June of that same year, going in three days a week for three hours of treatment each time. With no kidney transplant program in northern Nevada at the time, Angela was forced to look outside the area, without success. Feeling discouraged, she continued dialysis, hoping for an answer. That answer then came when she started seeing announcements on Renown’s intranet regarding the grand opening of the Renown Transplant Institute and the kidney transplant journey of Kirill Zelenin, the son Renown Clinical Application Specialist Masha Zelenin. After being referred to the Institute by her care team at DaVita Dialysis Center, Angela scheduled her evaluation appointment. Here’s a breakdown of what she experienced. Angela’s First Appointment at the Renown Transplant Institute Angela was excited to know that she would only have to wait a couple of weeks to be seen for her full-day appointment at the Renown Transplant Institute. She felt nothing but optimism when the day came. After she checked in at 7:30 a.m., her appointment started with a Transplant 101 education class, a detailed overview of the transplant process. She was then brought into the office to meet the multidisciplinary transplant team, including: Dr. Ernesto Molmenti, Executive Director of the Renown Transplant Institute and Chief of Transplantation at Renown Health Dr. Narisorn Atsava-Svate, Transplant Nephrologist for the Renown Transplant Institute Transplant nurse coordinators, a pharmacist, a dietician, a social worker and a financial coordinator Together, the team review her medical history, discussed what makes a good transplant candidate and explained the tests required as part of her evaluation. “These people were some of the kindest, most genuine people I’ve ever met,” she said. Following the team meet-and-greets, Angela was sent to the lab, where the phlebotomists took several blood samples. Then, she walked over from the lab to the imaging room, where she ended her full-day assessment with a chest X-ray and a CT scan of her abdomen and pelvis. Time of check-out: 3:30 p.m. Angela walked out of her appointment with restored hope, noting how “wonderful the support system is” at the Renown Transplant Institute.
