Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation (NNCCF), a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for children with cancer and their families, has collaborated with Renown Children’s Hospital, the only dedicated children’s hospital in northern Nevada, to enhance the hospital’s existing Butterfly Room. The Butterfly Room offers a serene setting for pediatric patients facing a terminal diagnosis and their parents, helping facilitate a peaceful end-of-life process.

The expansion was unveiled at a ribbon cutting event at Renown Children’s Hospital today. NNCCF’s donation will expand the Butterfly Room’s comforting features, including a sleeping sofa for parents, bedding and curtains to enhance the room’s tranquil and supportive feel. Artwork provided by Renown Health will add to the peaceful nature in the space.

“We want to take this opportunity to acknowledge the incredible resilience of pediatric cancer patients and their families. Advances in medicine have brought remarkable progress, and most children diagnosed with cancer today can look forward to successful treatment outcomes and bright futures,” said Dr. Kris Deeter, Physician-in-Chief, Renown Children’s Hospital and Chair of Pediatrics, University of Nevada Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med). “However, it is essential to recognize that despite these advancements, not all outcomes are favorable. Tragically, some children succumb to their illnesses, leaving an irreplaceable void in the lives of their families, our team and our community. This reality underscores the urgent need for continued support for families navigating this journey. It also reminds us of the importance of compassion, understanding and unity in addressing the challenges of pediatric cancer. We appreciate our collaboration with NNCCF and our hearts are with all those impacted by pediatric cancer.”

“As our community grows, keeping care close to home for pediatric patients, especially those facing a devastating cancer diagnosis, is a top priority for all of us,” said Paige McCall, Vice President of Women and Children, Renown Children’s Hospital. “Our newly enhanced Butterfly Room will help support patients and families to make lasting memories together in a space of healing and comfort. We are incredibly grateful for NNCCF for their generosity, which enabled us to transform our space once again.”

Renown Children’s Hospital has worked closely with NNCCF since 2005. Their collaboration to enhance the Butterfly Room is crucial to the Reno-Sparks community, as the project represents the start of a long-term collaboration to support pediatric oncology patients and their families.

"Northern Nevada Children's Cancer Foundation (NNCCF) is honored to collaborate with Renown Health to create this peaceful hospital room for the families we serve in our community,” said Brigette Cole, Executive Director, NNCCF. “Our work with Renown is crucial in the support we can provide to northern Nevada families battling a childhood cancer diagnosis. We are thrilled for the unveiling of the Butterfly Room as we believe this room can bring a sense of comfort and calm during an extremely difficult and stressful time."

"Our collaboration with Renown has continued to grow and has enabled us to better serve our families through communication, resources, and support,” Shirley Folkins-Roberts, Co-Founder and Board Member, NNCCF. “As a Co-Founder of NNCCF, the creation of the Butterfly Room has been a dream of our organization for many years, and it is incredible to see it come to life. Our support to local families battling a childhood cancer diagnosis has come a long way in our nearly 25 years as an organization, and we are excited to see how our work with Renown will continue to grow and expand the support we are able to offer."
