Let Those Ears Breathe! Increased Headphone and Ear Bud Use Leads to Ear Wax Build Up; Renown Urgent Cares Offer Relief
Wearing headphones or earbuds is a daily activity for many of us. Listening to music, podcasts, meetings, phone calls; there are endless reasons to stick them in or on your ears. However, if your ears start to feel plugged, full; or you feel dizzy, lightheaded or hear ringing in your ears; you may be experiencing ear wax build up where your ear canals become blocked and affect your hearing. If you’ve tried to clean your ears (please don’t use Q-Tips®), but still have symptoms, pain, or hearing loss, it’s time to see your physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant or visit Renown Urgent Care. “Ear wax isn’t dirty. It’s normal,” says Ryan Bristol, APRN, Advanced Practitioner of Nursing at Renown Urgent Care. “Ears are self-cleaning miracles, and naturally clean themselves with the help of jaw movement and skin migration. However, wearing headphones or earbuds for hours blocks earwax from naturally draining from the ear. Additionally, the dirt and bacteria that these headphones often carry can cause an infection on their own, and earwax buildup can trap dirt in the ear and block the canal completely. The snug fit of headphones can create a conducive environment for the accumulation of ear wax. It's crucial for individuals to be mindful of this and take necessary precautions to prevent complications." “Individuals experiencing symptoms such as ear pain, decreased hearing, or a sensation of fullness in the ears are encouraged to seek evaluation and treatment at their nearest urgent care facility,” says Rahul Mediwala, MD, CEO of Renown Medical Group. “By addressing ear wax build-up promptly, individuals can mitigate the risk of complications and maintain optimal ear health. Fortunately, prompt, pain-free and effective treatment is available at Renown Urgent Care. We offer professional ear wax removal procedures performed by trained staff, providing relief to those experiencing discomfort or hearing impairment due to excessive ear wax build-up.” The experts at Renown Health gave us some background. What is ear wax and why is it healthy? Ear wax is a protective substance called sebum made of fat, skin cells and sweat. Ear wax is produced by glands in the ear canal. It helps protect the ear from germs and dirt and prevents the sensitive skin of the ear canal from becoming irritated. It is normal and healthy to have a thin lining of ear wax on the canal. Ear wax will sometimes accumulate and move to the outer ear canal, where it would typically fall out or be wiped away. This is also normal. When should I seek care? An ear canal has too much wax if the ear feels plugged or hearing is affected. The accumulation of wax happens very gradually, so ears do not necessarily feel waxy. The problem is usually noticed because of changes in hearing. Over the counter remedies may offer relief. However, in some cases, the earwax has built up or become impacted, and ears need to be treated. What is the treatment? At Renown Urgent Care, we offer professional ear wax removal procedures performed by trained staff, providing relief to those experiencing discomfort or hearing impairment due to excessive ear wax build-up. Wax is flushed from the ear canal using a syringe filled with warm water and saline or diluted hydrogen peroxide. Most patients find the procedure is fast, pain free and effective. How can I prevent earwax buildup from headphones and ear buds? Most people who wear headphones or use earbuds occasionally or intermittently don’t have difficulties with excessive ear wax. Wax accumulation also depends on the size of the ear canals and the productivity of the oil glands in the ear canal. You can choose to use over the ear headphones. If you prefer to use in-ear headphones, the best modes of excess ear wax prevention are to: Clean headphones and earbuds regularly with a cloth or disinfectant wipes; Avoid sharing headphones or earbuds with other people; Take breaks from headphones and earbuds so ears can breathe and get back to normal; Pay attention to your ear health. Should we talk about Q-tips? Yes! Q-tips (and similar products) are rarely helpful for managing ear wax. The cotton on the end of the Q-tip is usually unable to pull the wax out of the canal. Worse, they can push the wax deep inside the ear canal, and it can end up impacted. Where should I seek care? Individuals experiencing symptoms such as ear pain, decreased hearing, or a sensation of fullness in the ears are encouraged to seek evaluation and treatment at a medical facility. By addressing ear wax build-up promptly, individuals can mitigate the risk of complications and maintain optimal ear health. Renown Health Announces Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA), Strategy & Implementation Plan
Renown Health, the leading health care system in northern Nevada, today announced its Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) Strategy & Implementation Plan for 2025-2027 for Washoe County. The Plan and Community Benefit Health Focus Areas for 2025-2027 are based on the 2023 Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) as required for all not-for-profit hospitals. The Assessment is conducted every three years to gain a better understanding of the health needs of the communities Renown Health serves and to address healthcare inequities. The CHNA includes an analysis of input from community stakeholders who represent the broad interests of the diverse communities served by the Renown hospitals including those with expertise in community and public health. Health needs were identified in the CHNA research and subsequently prioritized by community stakeholders. From the prioritized health needs, Health Focus Areas were chosen based on criteria that consider the Renown Health’s team capacity to impact community needs, the strength of community partnerships and the alignment with Renown’s organizational strategic planning efforts. Through this Implementation Strategy & Plan, Renown Health is committed to identifying and closing health equity gaps in communities that are historically marginalized and vulnerable. The 2025–2027 Health Focus Areas include; Mental Health: Based on the secondary data scoring results, Mental Health was again ranked as a high need topic area in Washoe County. This health topic area includes indicators such as Poor Mental Health: 14+ Days, Teens who have Attempted Suicide, Adults Ever Diagnosed with Depression, Intentional Injury (Suicide) Mortality Rate and Teens who Felt Sad or Hopeless. Access to Health Care and Community Services: Community Benefit efforts focus on increasing and supporting access to essential health care and community services for communities and groups that have been historically underserved through direct programs and partnerships with other local not-for-profit community-based organizations. The Access to Care effort is grounded in the knowledge that social determinants of health and health equity impact health outcomes. Indicators include Children without Health Insurance, Adults Unable to Afford to See a Doctor and Physician Provider Rates. Maternal and Child Health: The Infant Mortality Rate for Washoe County is on the rise and Maternal and Child Health indicators are worsening. Both Primary and Secondary Data collection for the CHNA process showed this health need as a priority for the community. Improvements in health care services, access to prenatal care, and education on maternal and child health can help to decrease the infant mortality rate and improve the health outcomes for mothers and children in Washoe County. Collaboration between healthcare providers, community organizations and government agencies can also lead to more effective interventions and solutions. By working together, a positive impact on the health and well being of our community can be sustained. Priority Geography Renown Health is a healthcare provider serving multiple communities in northern Nevada and eastern California, located east of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. The primary focus of Renown Health is to provide health care services to residents of the Reno -Sparks area, which is situated in Washoe County. Renown Health includes Renown Regional Medical Center, an 826-bed full service regional hospital located at 1155 Mill St., Reno, NV, 89502. The Community Benefit Service Area is Washoe County which has a population of 502,193 residents, making it the second most populous county in Nevada. Community Health Needs are greatest in zip codes: 89412, 89405, 89510, 89424, 89442, 89508, 89506, 89502, 89439, 89434, 89521, 89511, 89451, 89704. Over 90% of the county's population lives in the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area, which has undergone significant growth in the last decade. Although most patients reside in Washoe County, Renown Health serves an area of 100,000 square miles and many rural communities across northern Nevada. The health needs and outcomes in Washoe County are significantly impacted by the demographic composition of the region. To address these needs, the CHNA comprehensively assessed population dynamics, considering aspects such as age, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status, among other factors. By acknowledging the unique health requirements of various groups and communities, targeted interventions are being developed that address specific health disparities. The BARHII Framework and CMS Framework for Health Equity ensure that the initiatives and identified health needs are based on a true understanding of the root causes of health disparities and effectiveness in Renown’s community health initiatives. Renown Health provides a significant benefit to the region, providing 66.5% of the care for the Reno/Sparks market. As the same time, Renown provides 72.7% of the Medicaid and uninsured care provided to the region. Thank you to our Community The Renown Health leadership expresses appreciation to our clinicians, community, non-profit partners and colleagues at University of Nevada, Reno, who have been instrumental in the successful completion of the 2023 Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA), Implementation Strategy & Plan. We extend special thanks to Northern Nevada Public Health for their valuable insights and data which helped shape the report. The Renown Health Board and leadership have also made a significant contribution and commitment to community health and have reviewed and approved both the CHNA and Implementation Strategy & Plan. Renown Institute for Heart & Vascular Health Conducts First Farapulse™ Procedure In Nevada to Treat Atrial Fibrillation
PICTURED ABOVE: Members of the Renown Institute for Heart & Vascular Health celebrate the first FARAPULSE™ procedure in Nevada on March 18, 2024. Physicians, nurses and clinicians at the Renown Institute for Heart & Vascular Health have achieved a groundbreaking milestone as they successfully completed the first cardiac ablation procedure done in Nevada, utilizing the FARAPULSE™ Pulsed Field Ablation System this past March. "Atrial fibrillation, commonly known as Afib or AF, is an irregular heartbeat caused by an abnormal heart rhythm that makes the upper heart chambers (the atria) quiver or fibrillate. It’s the most common heart rhythm irregularity—or cardiac arrhythmia—and it’s estimated that by 2030, 12.1 million people in the U.S. may have Afib,” said Rahul Mediwala, MD, MBA, CEO of Renown Medical Group. “While Afib itself generally is not life-threatening, the complications from Afib can be very serious, as it can increase the risk for heart problems such as heart failure and stroke. We are pleased to introduce additional therapies that allow physicians to serve more patients, reduce complications and benefit overall public health.” "Our team takes immense pride in pioneering Nevada's first cardiac ablation procedure with the FARAPULSE™ Pulsed Field Ablation System, an FDA-approved innovation for atrial fibrillation treatment,” said Shining Sun, MD, a board-certified cardiologist trained in the procedure, at the Renown Institute for Heart & Vascular Health. “This milestone represents a significant leap forward in cardiac care and underscores our commitment to advancing innovative treatments for atrial fibrillation, said Matthew Cain, MD, a board-certified cardiac electrophysiologist trained in the procedure. “We anticipate a significant reduction in anesthesia duration and wait times for patients undergoing this FDA-approved procedure due to its efficiency.” What is Atrial Fibrillation? Atrial fibrillation (AF) occurs when the top two chambers of the heart, the atria, beat too fast and with an irregular rhythm (fibrillation). AF, the most common type of arrhythmia, can decrease the heart’s pumping efficiency, which can cause blood cells to pool and stick together, forming clots in the heart, and lead to stroke. People with AF have a higher risk of stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications than those with normal heart rhythms. AF affects nearly 2% of the general population worldwide, and approximately seven million Americans live with this arrhythmia. An estimated 38 million people globally have AF. About the FARAPULSE Pulsed Field Ablation System The FARAPULSE PFA System is a new alternative to standard-of-care thermal ablation. During a traditional ablation procedure, a catheter is guided to the interior of the heart and generates extreme temperatures – hot or cold – to destroy targeted areas in the heart associated with abnormal heart rhythms. The FARAPULSE PFA System relies on tissue selective, non-thermal electric fields to ablate heart tissue and avoid damage to surrounding structures. Positive 12-month data from the pivotal ADVENT clinical trial – the first randomized clinical trial to directly compare the efficacy and safety of the system against standard-of-care ablation – found that therapy with the device was as safe and effective as conventional thermal ablation, with statistically shorter ablation times and a quicker learning curve for physicians. Additional data from more than 17,000 patients demonstrated continued real-world safety of the system, with no reports of permanent phrenic nerve palsy, pulmonary vein stenosis or esophageal injury. Renown Regional Medical Center has been named #1 Hospital in Nevada by US News & World Report for the past three years as the best hospital for patients with complex, life-threatening, or rare conditions for the last two years and rated highest in NV in eight specialty areas including, Cancer; Cardiology & Heart Surgery; Diabetes & Endocrinology; Gastroenterology & GI Surgery; Nephrology; Neurology & Neurosurgery; Orthopedics; Pulmonology & Lung Surgery. Renown South Meadows Medical Center in south Reno has earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, the nation’s premier advocate of transparency in health care. This national distinction recognizes Renown Health’s national accomplishments in ensuring safe, high-quality hospital care for patients. Reno Home to Top-Performing Supply Chain of Distinction
Only organization in Nevada and one of 4,100 to receive national recognition for healthcare supply operations. Renown Health has earned the Top 25 Medium Hospitals- Supply Chain of Distinction Award, which recognizes top performing hospitals and health systems in North America for "perfect order" metrics for supply chain performance by GHX. The Supply Chains of Distinction Award honors GHX Exchange-connected provider organizations that excelled in driving best-in-class supply chain operations. This is achieved through the successful execution of perfect order metrics during a calendar year. GHX represents more than 4,100 hospitals across North America. “We are proud to recognize our Supply Chain team for achieving exceptional performance and being recognized nationally for best-in-class operations,” said Brian Erling, MD, MBA, President & CEO, Renown Health. “A well-run supply chain helps to ensure that physicians, nurses, and clinicians have the necessary resources to provide quality care to patients. Effective supply chain management helps to reduce costs, minimize waste, and optimize inventory levels. We celebrate and thank our team for their continued dedication to making a genuine difference in the health and well-being of the people and communities we serve.” Awareness of hospital supply chains increased during the COVID-19 pandemic when lockdowns were implemented globally, slowing down the manufacturing of new products and pharmaceuticals and interrupting the smooth flow of goods. Supply chains play a role in every industry, but those in healthcare are particularly vital, ensuring that the right products in the right quantities are available at the right places and at the right times, to ensure excellence in patient care. "Each of these outstanding organizations demonstrates a deep commitment to innovation in service to a more reliable, responsive and resilient healthcare supply chain," said Tina Vatanka Murphy, president, and CEO, GHX. "Renown Health is driving the industry forward and making positive, lasting contributions to the patients and families we serve together.” “With more than 4,100 North American hospitals vying for this level of excellence, this is an enormous feat for our purchasing and data management teams,” says Mary Shipley MBA, LMT, CCT Director of Supply Chain at Renown Health. “It is difficult to meet these standards of performance, and we’ve been working towards this for ten years. It is heartwarming to be nationally recognized for our work for our medical professionals and patients.” This ranking is based upon a set of "perfect order" metrics, rated as a percentage of PO lines sent across the GHX Exchange that are touchless and completely automated, from purchase through payment. ### About Renown Health Renown Health is the region’s largest, locally governed, not-for-profit integrated health care network serving Nevada, Lake Tahoe, and northeast California. Renown South Meadows Medical Center Earns Highest "A" Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group
Only hospital in northern Nevada to receive national recognition for patient safety and quality Renown South Meadows Medical Center in south Reno has earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit watchdog organization that serves as a voice for health care consumers and purchasers, using their collective influence to foster positive change in U.S. health care. This national distinction recognizes Renown Health’s national accomplishments in ensuring safe, high-quality hospital care for patients. The Leapfrog Group is an independent, nonprofit organization that upholds the standard of patient safety in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers. Developed under the guidance of a national expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,700 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries, and infections as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them. Leapfrog sets their standards using peer reviewed literature and expert opinion, peer comparisons, and alignment with existing national standards or performance targets. “We are very proud to recognize physicians, nurses, clinicians and the entire team at Renown South Meadows Medical Center for achieving exceptional Leapfrog performance in Patient-Centered Care, Critical Care, Nursing and Bedside Care for Patients, Patient Safety, Medication Safety, and Care for Total Joint Replacement and Elective Outpatient Surgery Patients,” said Brian Erling, MD, MBA, President and CEO, Renown Health. “As the only locally governed not-for-profit academic healthcare network in the region, Renown’s success is shared with our patients and community. Not every hospital is the same. Performance on things like infection rates, surgical errors, or patient injuries varies considerably—and matters greatly. It’s important for consumers to know and consider these things when choosing what physicians, hospital, or Emergency Room to select for their care.
