As Second Northern NV Hospital Closes Pediatrics Unit, Renown Children’s Hospital Expands to Meet Community Need for Essential Services
Northern Nevada Sierra Medical Center (Reno, NV) closed their inpatient pediatric unit for infants and children on June 1. This follows the 2022 decision by St Mary’s Medical Center (also in Reno) to close their 24-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and 18-bed pediatric floor in addition to eliminating maternity and birthing services. Why Are Hospitals Closing Pediatric Units? “Across the nation, pediatric units are being shuttered in favor of more lucrative units for adult care,” writes Brenna Miller, a Health Communications Specialist at the Lown Institute in her blog, Pediatrics and Profits: Why children’s hospital units are closing (Dec. 2022). “Why is pediatrics a drain on hospital finances? One reason is reimbursement. Medicaid, the state-run health insurance program for low-income patients, covers more than one third of children in the US, and Medicaid reimbursement rates are typically lower than those from other insurers.” The New York Times also reported a nationwide wave of hospitals shutting down their pediatric units in favor of more profitable adult units. “Adult beds are more lucrative than children’s beds. So as institutions look to boost profit margins, pediatrics is often among the first services to be cut,” said Emily Baumgaertner, Oct. 11, 2022. “The decline of local access to children’s inpatient care began over a decade ago and accelerated during the pandemic. Between 2008 and 2018 — the most recent national data available — pediatric inpatient units in the United States decreased almost 20 percent, and nearly a quarter of children found themselves farther from their nearest pediatric unit.” Northern Nevada Health System and St. Mary’s Medical Center are owned by for-profit investor companies, Universal Health Services, Inc., and Prime Healthcare. Renown Children’s is Here for You and Your Child “Renown is focused on meeting the community’s need for essential services, offering peace of mind knowing that any time, day or night, kids can get sick, and when they do, we are here to care for them, says Brian Erling, MD, MBA, president & CEO, Renown Health. “Renown is owned by our community, not by stockholders or private investors. We are a charitable, not-for-profit organization supported by grateful patients and donors. We are proud that 100% of our earnings are reinvested in programs, people, and equipment to improve the health of our community. We are investing in high quality health care for children; recruiting and training the next generation of physicians, nurses, and clinicians; and enhancing the quality of life for generations to come.” “At Renown Children’s, we offer a full range of pediatric services- both inpatient and outpatient,” says Kristina Deeter, MD, MBA, FAAP, Chair of Pediatrics (UNR Med) and Physician-in-Chief, Renown Children’s Hospital. “Our hospital services include a Level II Pediatric Trauma Center, Children’s Emergency Room (open 24/7), Pediatric ICU (PICU), children’s imaging center and a Level III neonatal ICU (NICU) within Renown Regional Medical Center. We also have a team of dedicated pediatricians who specialize in caring for children from birth to young adulthood. This includes preventative care such as annual checkups, immunizations, developmental screenings, and nutrition and physical activity counseling. Whether you're a new parent or an experienced caregiver, we're here to support you and your child every step of the way.” In addition to providing comprehensive OB/GYN and birthing services, Renown Health has invested in and expanded their team of dedicated pediatricians and support staff to ensure your child receives the best care possible in the highest quality facilities. New Neonatal Intensive Care Unit The Wilbur D. May Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is located on the fifth floor of the Tahoe Tower at Renown Regional Medical Center. This special floor was designed to provide advanced care for 49 premature babies and newborns. As the only level III NICU in the region, Renown’s team of neonatologists, nurses, and specialists provides around-the-clock care for premature and sick infants, ensuring the highest standard of care. Pictured Above: Rodeo Wish recipients stand with representatives from the Reno Rodeo Foundation and Renown Children’s Hospital at the E.L. Wiegand Pavilion at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno. The Reno Rodeo Foundation has once again demonstrated its commitment to improving the lives of local children with its annual “Rodeo Wish” program. This year, the Foundation is funding the wishes of three young patients at Renown Children’s Hospital with $36,000 in funding. Renown Children’s Hospital is northern Nevada’s only dedicated pediatric hospital with a 24/7 Children’s Emergency Room and a Level II American College of Surgeons Trauma Center designation. “We are grateful to the Reno Rodeo Foundation and their Reno Rodeo Wish program which assists young people who have unique and extraordinary life and medical needs,” said Brian Erling, MD, MBA, President and CEO, Renown Health. “This program helps improve the quality of life for both patients and families, through granting their ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ wishes. All of us at Renown are inspired by our patients and families; and thrilled that three families will benefit from this generous donation. We appreciate the community’s trust and partnership in improving the health and well-being of children.” “Our mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of children facing medical challenges,” said Debby Herman, Reno Rodeo Foundation Board President. “By granting these wishes, we provide financial support and memorable experiences that offer comfort and happiness.” “Renown Children’s Hospital is dedicated to improving the health of our pediatric patients, and committed to the welfare, happiness and comfort of every child entrusted to our care,” said Kristina Deeter, MD, MBA, FAAP, Chair of Pediatrics (UNR Med) and Physician-in-Chief, Renown Children’s Hospital. “The Rodeo Wish program demonstrates the importance of inspiring hope for children experiencing extraordinary health conditions that require acute care. These meaningful donations from the Reno Rodeo Foundation highlight our community’s deep-rooted ties with Renown Children’s Hospital.” Since its inception in 2003, the Rodeo Wish program has selected children nominated by local hospitals to receive funding for special wishes that significantly improve their quality of life. This year, every patient receiving a gift was nominated by a care provider at Renown Children’s Hospital. The surprises were revealed at a heartwarming event held in Fianna’s Healing Garden at Renown Regional Medical Center on Monday, June 10. Becky Haase, RN, Renown Health Director of Nursing, Women and Children’s Services, has witnessed the lasting impact of the Rodeo Wish program on the lives of Children’s Hospital patients over the last 21 years. “The Reno Rodeo Foundation grants gifts that help build positive and lasting memories for our young patients and their brave families. Renown Institute for Heart & Vascular Health Conducts First Farapulse™ Procedure In Nevada to Treat Atrial Fibrillation
PICTURED ABOVE: Members of the Renown Institute for Heart & Vascular Health celebrate the first FARAPULSE™ procedure in Nevada on March 18, 2024. Physicians, nurses and clinicians at the Renown Institute for Heart & Vascular Health have achieved a groundbreaking milestone as they successfully completed the first cardiac ablation procedure done in Nevada, utilizing the FARAPULSE™ Pulsed Field Ablation System this past March. "Atrial fibrillation, commonly known as Afib or AF, is an irregular heartbeat caused by an abnormal heart rhythm that makes the upper heart chambers (the atria) quiver or fibrillate. It’s the most common heart rhythm irregularity—or cardiac arrhythmia—and it’s estimated that by 2030, 12.1 million people in the U.S. may have Afib,” said Rahul Mediwala, MD, MBA, CEO of Renown Medical Group. “While Afib itself generally is not life-threatening, the complications from Afib can be very serious, as it can increase the risk for heart problems such as heart failure and stroke. We are pleased to introduce additional therapies that allow physicians to serve more patients, reduce complications and benefit overall public health.” "Our team takes immense pride in pioneering Nevada's first cardiac ablation procedure with the FARAPULSE™ Pulsed Field Ablation System, an FDA-approved innovation for atrial fibrillation treatment,” said Shining Sun, MD, a board-certified cardiologist trained in the procedure, at the Renown Institute for Heart & Vascular Health. “This milestone represents a significant leap forward in cardiac care and underscores our commitment to advancing innovative treatments for atrial fibrillation, said Matthew Cain, MD, a board-certified cardiac electrophysiologist trained in the procedure. “We anticipate a significant reduction in anesthesia duration and wait times for patients undergoing this FDA-approved procedure due to its efficiency.” What is Atrial Fibrillation? Atrial fibrillation (AF) occurs when the top two chambers of the heart, the atria, beat too fast and with an irregular rhythm (fibrillation). AF, the most common type of arrhythmia, can decrease the heart’s pumping efficiency, which can cause blood cells to pool and stick together, forming clots in the heart, and lead to stroke. People with AF have a higher risk of stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications than those with normal heart rhythms. AF affects nearly 2% of the general population worldwide, and approximately seven million Americans live with this arrhythmia. An estimated 38 million people globally have AF. About the FARAPULSE Pulsed Field Ablation System The FARAPULSE PFA System is a new alternative to standard-of-care thermal ablation. During a traditional ablation procedure, a catheter is guided to the interior of the heart and generates extreme temperatures – hot or cold – to destroy targeted areas in the heart associated with abnormal heart rhythms. The FARAPULSE PFA System relies on tissue selective, non-thermal electric fields to ablate heart tissue and avoid damage to surrounding structures. Positive 12-month data from the pivotal ADVENT clinical trial – the first randomized clinical trial to directly compare the efficacy and safety of the system against standard-of-care ablation – found that therapy with the device was as safe and effective as conventional thermal ablation, with statistically shorter ablation times and a quicker learning curve for physicians. Additional data from more than 17,000 patients demonstrated continued real-world safety of the system, with no reports of permanent phrenic nerve palsy, pulmonary vein stenosis or esophageal injury. Only organization in Nevada and one of 4,100 to receive national recognition for healthcare supply operations. Renown Health has earned the Top 25 Medium Hospitals- Supply Chain of Distinction Award, which recognizes top performing hospitals and health systems in North America for "perfect order" metrics for supply chain performance by GHX. The Supply Chains of Distinction Award honors GHX Exchange-connected provider organizations that excelled in driving best-in-class supply chain operations. This is achieved through the successful execution of perfect order metrics during a calendar year. GHX represents more than 4,100 hospitals across North America. “We are proud to recognize our Supply Chain team for achieving exceptional performance and being recognized nationally for best-in-class operations,” said Brian Erling, MD, MBA, President & CEO, Renown Health. “A well-run supply chain helps to ensure that physicians, nurses, and clinicians have the necessary resources to provide quality care to patients. Effective supply chain management helps to reduce costs, minimize waste, and optimize inventory levels. We celebrate and thank our team for their continued dedication to making a genuine difference in the health and well-being of the people and communities we serve.” Awareness of hospital supply chains increased during the COVID-19 pandemic when lockdowns were implemented globally, slowing down the manufacturing of new products and pharmaceuticals and interrupting the smooth flow of goods. Supply chains play a role in every industry, but those in healthcare are particularly vital, ensuring that the right products in the right quantities are available at the right places and at the right times, to ensure excellence in patient care. "Each of these outstanding organizations demonstrates a deep commitment to innovation in service to a more reliable, responsive and resilient healthcare supply chain," said Tina Vatanka Murphy, president, and CEO, GHX. "Renown Health is driving the industry forward and making positive, lasting contributions to the patients and families we serve together.” “With more than 4,100 North American hospitals vying for this level of excellence, this is an enormous feat for our purchasing and data management teams,” says Mary Shipley MBA, LMT, CCT Director of Supply Chain at Renown Health. “It is difficult to meet these standards of performance, and we’ve been working towards this for ten years. It is heartwarming to be nationally recognized for our work for our medical professionals and patients.” This ranking is based upon a set of "perfect order" metrics, rated as a percentage of PO lines sent across the GHX Exchange that are touchless and completely automated, from purchase through payment. ### About Renown Health Renown Health is the region’s largest, locally governed, not-for-profit integrated health care network serving Nevada, Lake Tahoe, and northeast California. Renown South Meadows Medical Center Earns Highest "A" Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group
Only hospital in northern Nevada to receive national recognition for patient safety and quality Renown South Meadows Medical Center in south Reno has earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit watchdog organization that serves as a voice for health care consumers and purchasers, using their collective influence to foster positive change in U.S. health care. Leapfrog is the nation’s premier advocate of transparency in health care—collecting, analyzing, and disseminating data to inform value-based purchasing and improved decision-making. This national distinction recognizes Renown Health’s national accomplishments in ensuring safe, high-quality hospital care for patients. The Leapfrog Group is an independent, nonprofit organization that upholds the standard of patient safety in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers. Developed under the guidance of a national expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,700 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries, and infections as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them. Leapfrog sets their standards using peer reviewed literature and expert opinion, peer comparisons, and alignment with existing national standards or performance targets. “We are very proud to recognize physicians, nurses, clinicians and the entire team at Renown South Meadows Medical Center for achieving exceptional Leapfrog performance in Patient-Centered Care, Critical Care, Nursing and Bedside Care for Patients, Patient Safety, Medication Safety, and Care for Total Joint Replacement and Elective Outpatient Surgery Patients,” said Brian Erling, MD, MBA, President and CEO, Renown Health. “As the only locally governed not-for-profit academic healthcare network in the region, Renown’s success is shared with our patients and community. Not every hospital is the same. Performance on things like infection rates, surgical errors, or patient injuries varies considerably—and matters greatly. It’s important for consumers to know and consider these things when choosing what physicians, hospital, or Emergency Room to select for their care. We are very excited to be recognized as the only hospital to achieve this designation in northern Nevada, and only one of two in the state (the other being in Las Vegas).” To see Renown South Meadows Medical Center’s full grade details and to access patient tips for staying safe in the hospital, visit HospitalSafetyGrade.org and follow The Leapfrog Group on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) and via The Leapfrog Group newsletter. Renown Health Celebrates Grand Reopening of Expanded Wound Clinic
Renown Health is thrilled to announce the successful grand reopening event of the remodeled and expanded outpatient Advanced Wound Clinic at 1500 East 2nd Street in Reno. The event, which took place on April 30, 2024, welcomed patients and guests to commemorate this significant milestone. Attendees were treated to a series of activities, including a ribbon-cutting ceremony, keynote speaker and a tour of the newly refurbished facilities. “The expansion of the Advanced Wound Clinic at Renown signifies a tremendous leap forward for our community and is a testament to the dedication of our patients. The purpose of wound care is to help you heal faster so you can get back to your life. A chronic wound can detract from your quality of life and prevent you from doing things you enjoy,” said Dr. Derek Freiheit, Medical Director, Renown Advanced Wound Care. “I am proud to witness the collective impact of our efforts as clinicians in partnership with patients, to enhance access to essential healthcare services, heal their wounds and improve their lives." “This event reaffirms our commitment to advancing access to healthcare,” said Rahul Mediwala, MD, MBA, Chief Executive Officer, Renown Medical Group. “With the expansion of our state-of-the-art Advanced Wound Clinic, we’re not just healing wounds; we’re pioneering innovative solutions, transforming lives and reaffirming our dedication to exceptional patient care. Together, we are working to improve access to advanced wound care for all in need, including providing training and resources to rural home health agencies and clinics so that all patients can receive care they need, close to home.” A highlight of the event was the inspiring words delivered by Richard Peraldo, whose remarkable journey has touched the lives of many in the northern Nevada community. Richard was diagnosed with cancer in 2018 and his story served as a powerful reminder of the importance of resilience and community support in overcoming adversity. His presence lent a profound sense of purpose to the occasion, reinforcing Renown Health's commitment to providing compassionate care to all those we serve. “The people in this clinic saved my life and I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn't for them,” Richard said. “When I first came to the Wound Clinic, this was a team of doctors and nurses, but when I left, they were family and friends.” The successful reopening and expansion of the Renown Advanced Wound Clinic marks a significant milestone in our ongoing mission to provide best-in-class healthcare services to the community.
