    Thirteen Area Nursing Students Recognized With Scholarships

    Three scholarship recipients honored with Cherie Elvin Memorial Scholarship for 2016 Reno Air Race tragedy; Ten others recognized with nursing scholarships by Renown Health Foundation donors. Thirteen area nursing students were the stars of the show today at an event celebrating nursing education. Renown Health leaders held the 2022 Nursing Scholarship Award ceremony to recognize future nurses making a genuine difference in the lives of others, and awarded scholarships to help them pursue their education. Scholarships were presented to thirteen nursing students who are also working at Renown Health and currently pursuing their nursing degrees. Today’s financial awards build on scholarship support from The Cherie Elvin Memorial Fund, which was created by the Elvin Family as a legacy to honor their mother, Cherie, who died at the 2011 Reno Air Races.  Melodie Osborn, RN Chief Nursing Executive; Jana Elliott, RN, DNP, Chief Nursing Officer for Renown Regional; Erin VanKirk, RN, Director of Nursing Education and Alicia Glassco, RN, Director of Medical-Surgical Nursing, presented the scholarships with Thomas Graf, MD, interim CEO of Renown Health during the event held at Mack Auditorium at Renown Regional Medical Center this morning. Members of the Elvin family attended the event via video link, and spoke to the group after watching a clip from Broken Propeller, an online documentary film by producer/director Christine Lazzarini that honors the heroes who responded to the tragedy on September 16, 2011. It was on that day that The Galloping Ghost, a highly modified North American P-51D Mustang racing aircraft, crashed into spectators while competing at the Reno Air Races in killing the pilot, James K. "Jimmy" Leeward, and ten people on the ground. Sixty-nine more people on the ground were injured. It was the third-deadliest airshow disaster in U.S. history.  The 2011 air race crash had an immeasurable impact on the entire Elvin family. Cherie, 73, lost her life, while Chuck, her husband of 52 years, their two sons and daughter-in-law all lost part of their right legs. The family received treated at area hospitals and is still grateful for the care, kindness and support received in northern Nevada. Cherie's son, Bill, and daughter-in-law, Rachel, spoke to the group saying, “As the Elvin family we honor and remember Cherie and work to support nurses in our community.” The care the family received from the physicians, nurses, hospital care providers, EMS teams, and the community inspired the Elvin Family to increase their funding from one scholarship to three scholarships.  Cherie Elvin Memorial Fund scholarships were presented to Alexis Perkins, Katelynn Mahone, Veronica Wentker, who all attend the nursing program at Carrington College.  To recognize the dedication and sacrifice, and to encourage others to pursue a nursing education, the nursing leadership team and Renown Health Foundation donors, for the first time, also awarded scholarships to ten additional recipients for a total of 13 awards. Each scholarship is valued at $1,000 and awarded to employees who are committed to working at the bedside, convey the fundamental qualities of a nurse and look to connect with patients recovering from traumatic situations. Kami Sherpa, who is a critical care technician in Telemetry, wants to work as a registered nurse in Telemetry or the Intensive Care Unit when she graduates. She is currently attending the Orvis School of Nursing at the University of Nevada, Reno. Kami wrote, “I lost my grandad at a very young age. When he died, I decided to become a nurse and to do my best to make every person’s hospital stay a good one. I am the first person in my family to go to school and to earn a bachelor’s degree. This scholarship means so much. I know my mom and my grandma will be proud. I promised them I would take care of people in need and ease their pain. Nursing is my passion in life.” Nursing is an extremely rewarding career, and it has the added benefit of being in high demand. However, getting through nursing school takes a lot of hard work—and it can be expensive. According to the  Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), in 2019, there were approximately 3 million people working as registered nurses in the U.S. Demand for the role is expected to increase by 7% from 2019 to 2029. The average cost of nursing school can vary widely. The cost for a Bachelor’s in Nursing (BSN) can be comparable to any other four year degree. According to U.S. News, the average cost of tuition for the 2020-2021 school year was $9,687 for a four year public school, and $35,087 for a four year private school. Some may pursue other pathways, such as an online RN to BSN program, which can sometimes be more affordable ranging between $25,000 to $80,000 in cost. While this may seem costly, the median annual salary for an RN in 2019 was $75,330. “There has never been a more important time to recruit and retain qualified candidates to become nurses,” said Thomas Graf, MD, interim CEO of Renown Health, as he announced the increased commitment of donors to Renown Health Foundation.  “Your journey to become a nurse includes a lifelong commitment to learning and showing up as your best self,” said Jana Elliott, Chief Nursing Officer for Renown Regional Medical Center. “Treat each patient as the most important person in the world to you.     Renown Vaccinates 2,900 Older Adults This Week Against COVID-19

    Beginning today, Renown Health has partnered with the Washoe County Health District to help distribute the initially available, limited supplies of COVID-19 vaccines. Renown announced today that they are able to immediately vaccinate 2,900 of the oldest adults in our community this week.  See photos and b-roll from today's first vaccinations of older adults here, as well as photos, b-roll and interview from Renown's past employee vaccination events. “We remain steadfast in our determination to fight the good fight for our community. Being able to administer COVID-19 vaccines to older adults in our community is incredibly gratifying for our team. The tragedy of COVID-19 is that the risk for severe illness with COVID-19 increases with age, with older adults at highest risk. Our oldest adults are also at greater risk of requiring hospitalization or dying if diagnosed with COVID19,” said Tony Slonim, MD, DrPH, President & CEO of Renown Health. “The Renown team is pleased to help, with support of and the vaccine provided by the Washoe County Health District, to be part of the solution, and to make a genuine difference in the health and well-being of others. We all look forward to the vaccine becoming more widely available to all in the coming weeks and months.”  In Washoe County alone, over 18% of the population is 65 years or older, with 88,456 in that age group and Renown is only receiving limited supplies of the vaccine Renown’s COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic is operating by appointment only, and is based on Renown’s ability to obtain the initially available, limited weekly supplies of vaccine. Those who are 70 years or older interested in joining the waiting list for an appointment at Renown’s Drive Thru COVID-19 vaccine clinic, will need to download Renown MyChart, if they currently do not have an account. Residents do not need to have a Renown Health provider and it is free to enroll. Residents will be notified through MyChart when more of the limited supply of vaccine is made available to Renown, and additional appointments are open for scheduling. Please do not contact a Renown doctor/health care provider at this time to schedule a vaccine appointment. Instead, all are encouraged to register for a Renown MyChart account if you have not already. Pending vaccine availability, Renown anticipates releasing its next round of appointments to a random sample of patients age 70 and older as early as next week, Monday, January 18 by 12 noon. No additional appointments are available for this week. All 2,900 appointments for this week have been made and confirmed.  You are advised not to receive the vaccine if:  You are ill at the time of vaccination (fever, shortness of breath, vomiting, diarrhea or acute illness). You have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the previous 14 days. You have received any other vaccination in the last 14 days. You have a history of significant allergic reaction to this vaccine or any of its ingredients. Due to unprecedented demand, Renown is coordinating with local and state agencies to ensure every person has an opportunity to receive the vaccine over time. Downloading MyChart is not a guarantee of an appointment.  The intricacies of vaccine administration Renown Health has been able to distribute and administer the COVID-19 vaccine to a record number of people in the shortest possible time. Much of this success is due to the use of a convenient patient electronic medical record, called EPIC MyChart, which allows people to be notified that the vaccine is available, schedule their appointments online, complete the consent form and have full documentation.     Say Hello to a Bi-Weekly Call-In Show Designed to Help Aging Adults Weather the COVID-19 Storm

    New, virtual community gatherings from ‘The Hello Project’ help older adults stay connected and informed during uncertain times. When The HELLO Project received a BUILD Health Challenge grant back in November to address social isolation and loneliness amongst elderly adults in Reno, they had no idea how timely and relevant the program would be. Rising to the challenge, The HELLO Project has fast-tracked programs to engage and enrich the lives of older adults sheltering in place. It Starts with Hello, The Hello Project’s bi-weekly virtual community gathering place, takes place Tuesdays and Thursdays at noon, and people can attend by calling in or joining on their computer via Zoom (See viewing information here). Each show will feature a timely topic, factual information, a chance to chat with others in the community, and ends with some good news – The Daily Dandelion. The first episodes of the virtual series featured Dr. Coard from Renown Health’s Stacie Mathewson Behavioral Health and Addiction Institute. During these informative sessions, Dr. Coard discussed anxiety and helpful strategies to deal with the stress of this pandemic. The HELLO Project also produced a four-page resource guide to direct the community to resources for staying socially engaged during these challenging times. “While we keep referring to this period of isolation as social distancing, it really should be thought of as physical distancing,” said Kindle Craig, Director of Renown Health’s Healthy Aging Institute. “Yes, to keep each other safe we need to keep our physical distance, but there is no reason we have to be socially isolated. In fact, now, more than ever, it’s important that we foster our social connections.     Artown Partners with Renown to Bring "Love" Sculpture on Mill St.

    The “LOVE” sculpture, a one-ton, welded aluminum artwork with letters 10-feet tall and eight-feet wide, will find a temporary home at Renown Regional Medical Center’s main entrance at 1155 Mill Street in Reno, Nevada. Debuting at Burning Man in 2019, the free-standing structure is wired for illumination, has weighted steel base plates for anchorage and will be visible to vehicular and pedestrian traffic along the Mill Street and Ryland Street corridors.  “The overall footprint of the sculpture is 40-feet long by 4-feet deep,” says artist Jeff Schomberg, who has collaborated with artist/designer Laura Kimpton, to create 18 letter-based sculptures— including the popular “BELIEVE” piece at Civic Center Plaza in downtown Reno and the “HOME” sculpture for the Reno Aces at Greater Nevada Field. Each letter in the “LOVE” sculpture took Schomberg three to four weeks to build, and the piece takes on an added dimension when illuminated. “The sculpture is lit from within with color changing LED lights. The combination of the LEDs and the aluminum produce(s) a unique look at night,” Schomberg states.  Artist-designer Laura Kimpton, who is dyslexic, says creating monumental word art has been a powerful form of healing and expression. “I can’t tell you how beautiful it is that people will be able to see this work of art at the hospital, contemplate it and be inspired by it,” Kimpton emphasizes. For Artown, inspiring community through the arts is paramount—especially at this moment. “Artown is extremely honored to be able to provide comfort through our partnership with Renown and this incredible work of art by Laura Kimpton and Jeff Schomberg,” says Artown Executive Director Beth Macmillan. “This piece of art and the message of love during these uncertain times, promises to help enlighten, engage and heal the spirits of patients, physicians, nurses and employees at Renown who are fighting the good fight. Due to social distancing, the lighting will NOT be open to the public, however, a live stream of the event will be available through Renown’s Facebook page. In an effort to shine a light on our healthcare workers, several area businesses and neighborhoods are lighting up in conjunction with the LOVE sculpture lighting. Individuals are invited to do the same by placing an enclosed candle or light outside their home.  The installation of the “LOVE” sculpture was funded by generous donors and the Renown Health Foundation.     Local Businesses to Help Renown Fight Against Germs Amid Pandemic

    Seven Troughs Distilling Co., Damon Industries, The Depot and Forsaken River have worked together to supply Renown Health with 726 gallons of hand sanitizer to date. Thanks to the support of local businesses, Renown Health’s need for hand sanitizer is being met. Seven Troughs Distilling Co., with the help of several area distilleries including The Depot Craft Brewery Distillery and Forsaken River Spirits, is using their distilling equipment to create ethyl alcohol. Damon Industries mixes the ethyl alcohol with other key ingredients in accordance to the hand sanitizer recipe issued by the FDA and World Health Organization, bottles the contents, and distributes the bottles to Renown. This community-wide collaboration has resulted in 726 gallons of hand sanitizer for Renown thus far. Seven Troughs had previously manufactured hand sanitizer and surface sanitizer using their non beverage grade alcohol for years, which employees used internally to sanitize their hands and clean machines. At the start of the pandemic, the distillery continued producing the sanitizer for family and friends. The word spread quickly about Seven Troughs’ capabilities – and that’s when Renown reached out to the distillery to see if they could help.  “All of a sudden, instead of making a 50-gallon batch of hand sanitizer, we needed to make a 500- gallon batch,” said Seven Troughs president Tom Adams. “We quickly realized that we were very much out of our depth. We thought it would be a better plan if we could focus on what we do well, which is making ethanol, and if we could get a partner that could focus on the formulation and bottling. That ended up being Damon Industries.”  Before the pandemic, Damon Industries primarily manufactured juice products for smoothie shops and healthcare facilities – a market that had basically collapsed. The team at Damon Industries was quick to respond to Adams’ call for assistance, as it was a chance to serve the community and keep staff employed. “It didn’t take any convincing,” said Damon Industries’ vice president of sales Brandon Halvorson when asked about the company’s impetus for moving into the hand sanitizer industry. “We knew the community needed a product and we knew we had the partnerships that could get it done.     Newly Expanded Clinical Research Center at UNR Med Fosters Collaboration and Research with Renown Health

    Renown Health and the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) are proud to announce a newly integrated and expanded research space called the Clinical Research Center (CRC). This space offers a dynamic physical location on the University of Nevada, Reno campus that supports the UNR Med and Renown Health research enterprise.     Leading U.S. Hospitals Team Up To Promote COVID-19 Vaccine

    A coalition of 60 top hospitals and healthcare institutions have joined forces in a nationwide campaign to encourage adults to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Led by Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic, the campaign "Get the Vaccine to Save Lives" is designed to reassure the public that vaccines are safe, effective and necessary to achieve herd immunity and return to normal activities. "We're asking people to talk to their healthcare providers if they have questions and then get vaccinated," says Gianrico Farrugia, M.D., Mayo Clinic's president and CEO. "The vaccine is our strongest asset to end the pandemic, and I urge everyone who is eligible to get whichever vaccine you're first offered to save lives." The campaign hopes to reach adults who are hesitant to receive a vaccine, including racial and minority ethnic groups and people living in rural communities. According to a Kaiser Family Foundation survey published March 30, 17% of the public say they will take a wait-and-see approach before getting it themselves, and another 20% say they will never get a vaccine or will only get it if required to do so for work, school or other activities. This leaves a significant portion of the population at risk of going unvaccinated.  The nationwide campaign includes print and digital advertising, media outreach, social media, an awareness video and an informational website. "The COVID-19 vaccine is safe and highly effective and offers our best hope for beating the disease," said Tom Mihaljevic, M.D., Cleveland Clinic's CEO and president. "We all want to see a return to our pre-COVID routines, when we can once again gather safely with family and friends. To reach that goal, we must improve vaccination rates to achieve herd immunity.     Child Abuse Prevention Month serves as an important reminder of the year-round need to protect and support those most vulnerable in our community.     Renown Thanks Community as COVID-19 Drive-Thru Ends

    After administering more than 73,000 dose one and dose two vaccinations to our community, Renown's vaccine team will conclude its efforts at Renown's drive-thru site later this month. Renown Health has been pleased to work with the Washoe County Health District, the state, and the CDC to distribute the limited supplies of COVID-19 vaccines. Leaders of the COVID-19 vaccine taskforce at Renown announced today that Wednesday, May 12, 2021 will be the last day the organization will administer dose one of the COVID-19 vaccine to community members at Renown’s drive-thru clinic.  Renown's vaccine clinic will remain open until all individuals who receive their first dose of the vaccine through Renown have the opportunity to receive their second dose.     Bursting with Ride! The Oldest Hospital in Nevada Donates a Historic Heirloom to Recognize 160 Years of Healthcare and Emergency Medical Services in Northern Nevada

Technophilic motorheads cruise in from gear and far for the experience, style and craftsmanship of these timeless treasures at the Hot August Nights® show, and the Nevada Day Parade. Many patients and families have reported losing their bearings after seeing the “Ghostbuster-Like ambulance” at Renown’s Regional Medical Center. This week, Renown Health employees were auto-ly delighted to donate a historic heirloom, a rare 1949 Superior Cadillac Ambulance to the National Automobile Museum in Reno. Yes, a car is reborn! In ignition, the vintage auto will be added to the museum’s collection, keeping the ambulance which had last been in service in Clark County, fuel circle and back to its gas roots. Despite the health system being known for intensive car and stroke, it set tongues wagon for a hospital to own such a radical roadster. Renown was aheadlight of their time, thanks to a tank of Renown employees, who on a rim in 1987, suggested that they would door to be different with this differential of the medical center’s long-standing commitment to emergency care, health and wheelness. A six-month search ended in January 1988 when this curious clunker was found in Tecopa, CA, near Death Valley. It was love at first light from the northern Nevada community, and through their tireless efforts, a team transformed the wrecker into a classic showpiece for what was then called Washoe Medical Center. The classic car was named the White Knight, showcased each year at employee appreciation events and driven in parades. In 2011, employees turned up the seat by adding purple cushions and door decals for Renown’s 150 birthday celebration. However, driving the 1949 love buggy without power steering, brakes or seat belts became a motor of life and death and inceasingly unsafe. To stay on the safe ride, the ambulance received an honorable suspension and sat in tire straits for the last six years in the Regional Medical Center garage. On a recent road trip to the hospital, Phil MacDougall, National Automobile Museum president and executive director, beamed when he saw the nostalgic medical rescue wagon. On a rim, he rolled over to the Renown team and recalled, “there’s always vroom for one more classic coupe in the National Automobile Museum!” Dr. Brian Erling, the president and CEO of Renown thought it was a wheely good idea and gave the o-key. But it wasn’t a slam trunk. It was a spoiler. Why? I hate to brake it to you but the rarified rambler wouldn’t start! Everything grinded to asphalt. Were the connection cables corroded? Was it an arrested alternator? A faulty fuse? Finite fossil fuel? A highly polished team of Renown mechanics and engineers shifted into gear to repair the roadster. Lighting quick, Michelle propelled the pit crew into action. With not a minute to spare, Kevin Maes and Alex Cardenas, diagnosed the dinosaur. Ably assisted by director of facilities, Chris Baker and via phone by retired auto aficionado Larry T, the technical team got fired up when they found the amps had stopped cranking in the bygone battery. The auto alliance throttled up the moving machine and the team showed and shined! The victorious champions drove the dusty vintage vehicle out of the Renown Regional garage, into a flashy flatbed and all the highway to the National Automobile Museum at the corner of Lake and Mill Streets in downtown Reno. The finishing clutch was that the winsome wagon will now join the museum’s collection of more than 200 classics. What’s the road ahead? It may be converted to the Ghostbuster ambulance, and join the many eye-popping cars housed at the National Automobile Museum which have been seen in movies and TV shows such as; Titanic, Rebel without a Cause, Batman & Robin, Back to the Future, Herbie and more! Proving it is never to light to start up a new partnership! History of Washoe County Hospital (now Renown) and the 1949 Superior Cadillac Ambulance The community established the Washoe clinic in 1862 (which later became Washoe County Hospital), during a smallpox outbreak to treat the sick during the Civil War and Comstock Lode silver boom. Washoe County Hospital opened in 1864, the same year Nevada became a state. Almost a century later, the newly minted 1949 Superior Cadillac Ambulance rolled off an assembly line in Detroit. Harry S. Truman geared up for his term as the 33rd President of the United States. Penicillin and other antibiotics saved millions from smallpox, tuberculosis, polio, whooping cough, tetanus, and malaria; and in 1949, Washoe County Hospital opened its first pediatrics unit. “We are proud to be the region’s leader in emergency care and trauma services, and as part of Renown, to have served the emergency medicine needs of our community for 160 years,” says Bret Frey, MD of Northern Nevada Emergency Physicians. “Renown is the only integrated health network with three Emergency Rooms and the area’s only trauma center. Our emergency services are available 24/7, we are an accredited Chest Pain Center and Stroke Center, and we know how to quickly get you the care you need.” Renown Health is home to three 24/7 Emergency Rooms that provide the highest level of emergency and trauma care in the region: Renown Regional Medical Center is the only Level II Trauma Center between Sacramento and Salt Lake City. Located near downtown Reno, this Emergency Room has several helipads and ambulance banks to intake patients requiring emergency care. Renown Children’s Hospital is home to only Emergency Room in the region designed just for pediatric patients. This location is staffed by Board-certified emergency physicians, pediatric specialists and provides child-sized equipment and family-friendly waiting areas. Renown South Meadows Medical Center includes South Reno’s first 24/7 Emergency Room. Located just off of I-580, this location is designed to treat patients who need immediate attention for emergencies. Remember if you are experiencing a life-threatening symptom or injury, signs of stroke or heart attack, immediately call 911. These locations are designed to assess and care for emergency situations, including heart attack symptoms, stroke symptoms, broken bones, shortness of breath, seizures, severe bleeding, head injuries, chest pains, severe pain, venomous stings and bites, choking or poisoning. All of Renown’s Emergency Rooms are staffed by Northern Nevada Emergency Physicians, including pediatric specialists and physicians who have completed fellowship training in specialty areas such as sports medicine, ultrasound and emergency medical services. The Greatest Era of Cars During World War II, a crew of GM designers fused airplane design elements into the 1949 post-war styling of the Superior Cadillac, igniting the Greatest Era of Cars and propelling post-war American automotive exuberance and luxury. The car’s curved windshield is nostalgic of an airplane cockpit, it’s roof and pontoon fender lines curvaceously beautiful from every angle. The ambulance was built on a 1948 chassis, features a fully shiftless Hydra-Matric Drive automatic transmission, and a high compression V-8, 150 horsepower engine that, combined with revised axle ratios push this ’49 Caddy to reach 100 mph and scale 0-60 mph in 14 seconds, impressive for the day. This marvelous machine could be purchased for $5,450. Cadillac later used fender loving care and the 1948 chassis to develop horse-powered hearses and languid limousines. Nope, it’s not exactly that Glorious Ghostbuster mobile! Many mistake Renown’s 1949 Superior Cadillac ambulance for the Cadillac Miller-Meteor which was called the Ectomobile in the Ghostbusters movie. That famous fueler and specter fightin’ wagon was produced ten years later, in 1959 in the Miller Meteor plant in Pigua, OH. The production run was very limited with only 400 vehicles produced. At nearly 20 feet in length and weighing 3 tons, the Cadillac Miller-Meteor was an unwieldy car to handle, though it was a smooth ride thanks to an air suspension system and a 6.3-liter V8 engine. It was reported that this 1959 model was purchased for the film for $4,800. Director Ivan Reitman accelerated the film by hiring vehicle designer Stephen Dane to oversee the Ekto-1. He also built the Proton Pack, Particle Thrower, Trap, Giga meter, Slime Scooper and Slime Blower — all within two weeks of the start of shooting of the original Ghostbusters movie.
