    10 Things You Might Not Know About Urgent Care

    Visiting a Renown Urgent Care location is an excellent option when you have a non-severe condition, such as a skin rash or sore throat, can't get in to see your primary care provider in a timely manner or if you need an appointment after regular business hours. To learn more about the ins and outs of Urgent Care, we spoke to David Lemak, MD, Division Chief Urgent Care, who let us know some reasons to visit Urgent Care, how to make your visit as efficient as possible, and more. Remember, for a life-threatening emergency, call 911 immediately! Urgent Care is similar to a Primary Care provider Urgent Care providers can do most of the things your Primary Care provider can do, with visits billed the same as an office visit. If you could put the word “severe” in front of your reason for visiting Urgent Care, please go to the emergency department right away For a list of what is an appropriate visit for Urgent Care click here. Also, we recommend that babies 2 months old and younger should go to the Renown Children’s Emergency Department, not Urgent Care.  Renown Health has 10 Urgent Care locations across northern Nevada There are five locations in Reno, two in Sparks, one in Carson City, one in Fernley and one in Fallon. Typically, mornings and late afternoon (right before dinner time) have the shortest wait times if you plan on walking in.   You will be asked to wait in your car when you arrive at a Renown Urgent Care facility. While you wait (or even before you arrive), patients are encouraged to complete all registration paperwork and co-pay information online.  Urgent Care is great for visits such as back-to-school physicals, camp physicals, commercial motor vehicle exams and more. Sometimes you cannot get in to see your primary care provider to meet the last-minute deadlines for certain school or work-related physicals. Many of these appointments can be completed at Urgent Care; we just recommend you call ahead and confirm that our facility offers what you need.  An Urgent Care provider can virtually order a PCR COVID-19 test.  Whether you have a possible exposure, are not feeling quite like yourself or need a negative test for upcoming travel, a COVID-19 test can be ordered for you. The cost for a visit to Urgent Care is dependent on your benefits, but the visit is billed the same as a standard office visit. If you don’t have insurance, a basic visit to a Renown Urgent Care will cost $125.

    Book Ahead to Make Urgent Care More Convenient

    How do you take the waiting game out of your Urgent Care visit? Book ahead! Here’s how this convenient service can help you schedule your appointment and see updated wait times at area urgent care facilities. We’ve all been there, done that: It’s after hours, you need to see a doc, and urgent care is slammed. Renown now offers a convenient option that will enhance your experience. Here’s How Book Ahead Works: From your phone or computer, you can check urgent care wait times around our region. This lets you see if the urgent care by your office is busier than the one closest to home — which may help your planning. Through Book Ahead, you can join the line at a specific urgent care just as you would in person. This allows you to stay home or at work as long as possible so you are more comfortable. Book Ahead When and Where to Receive Care We have many choices when it comes to our medical care. Should you visit a doctor’s office, urgent care, emergency care or make a Virtual Visit? It’s important to know which choice is right for your situation or condition. We asked Luis Palacio, M.D., with Renown Urgent Care to explain the differences and how to make your visit as smooth as possible. If you have been experiencing flu-like symptoms for less than 48 hours, call your doctor’s office. They can then determine if you can be treated with a prescription antiviral medicine. Visit urgent care or the emergency room only if you are unable to eat or drink anything and may be dehydrated, have a fever over 102.5 degrees F, or are experiencing shortness of breath. You can use Renown’s Virtual Visits videoconference service for flu-like symptoms so that you don’t need to leave the comfort of your home and you reduce the risk of spreading the virus to others. Virtual Visits allow you to see an urgent care provider from your home or office using a cellphone, computer or tablet with video capabilities. It is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. How Do You Book Virtual Visits? Go to Virtual Visits to get started. Here, you’ll learn what virtual check-in is all about: It allows you to stay where you are and receive text notifications once a care provider is almost ready to see you. Click, join a line, and we will ask you some questions about your symptoms. This allows us to make sure you don’t need to call 911 or go to the ER. Reasons to visit the ER include stroke, chest pain, severe shortness of breath, uncontrolled bleeding, seizures and severe allergic reaction. If you answer “no,” you will see the wait times for each urgent care location. If you need to get in right away, you can select the location with the shortest wait time. Or, if time is not an issue and you’d prefer to stay closer to your home or office, you can select that location. Once you’ve selected a location, you input your cell number, name and number of patients. As your appointment gets closer, urgent care will text you with updates on timing. When you get the text message, you can choose to get “more time” and have your appointment pushed back, or tell them you’re ready to be seen and on your way.     We’ve all been there: Your child gets sick right after urgent care closes — or worse, in the middle of the night. So do you wait it out, or do you load up and head to the Children’s ER? And while a short-and-sweet comprehensive parenting guide is elusive, we can help if your questions involve whether to go to the children’s ER or wait it out. Here, a pediatric emergency physician explains when you should take your child to the Children’s ER at Renown Children’s Hospital, and what makes a children’s ER different. How do you know when it’s time to take your child to the ER? Having a sick or injured child is stressful. If you have a true emergency, you should go straight to the ER or call 911.     Care At Your Fingertips: Renown Launches Virtual Symptom Checker

    New technology helps patients determine the best level of care for their health needs. Renown Health just announced a new, digital tool designed to keep our community safe and healthy. Symptom Checker, which launched today, is a user-friendly, web-based platform that assesses patients’ symptoms and seamlessly directs them to the appropriate level of care within the Renown network. Symptom Checker can be accessed 24/7 by visiting Renown Symptom Checker. From there, a patient can identify the area of the body responsible for their discomfort, and specify their symptoms. Upon entering their symptoms, patients receive a detailed health summary and care guide, which helps them determine the most appropriate action to take. Patients are able to schedule a visit at a Renown location directly through the Symptom Checker portal.     Where There is Smoke; There May Be Headaches, Nausea and Coughing

    Renown Urgent Care and Emergency Room teams encourage you to stay safe. Urgent Care is available seven days a week at 10 locations across northern Nevada and Emergency Rooms 24/7.  Millions of people across the West live in areas where air pollution can cause serious health problems. Local air quality can affect our daily lives. Like the weather, it can change from day to day. Northern Nevada Public Health’s (NNPH) Air Quality Management Division (AQMD) has issued an Air Quality Advisory due to the Davis Fire burning in southern Washoe County. Air monitors for the most region hit the “Moderate” range Saturday night, which is 151-200 on the Air Quality Index (AQI). That means some members of the public may experience health effects. All residents in impacted areas are encouraged to regularly monitor the air quality nearest them at www.airnow.gov and limit outdoor exposure when they see or smell smoke. Exposure to elevated PM2.5 (fine particulate matter in smoke) concentrations can result in eye and throat irritation, headaches, nausea, shortness of breath, congestion, coughing, impaired lung function and chest pain, especially among sensitive individuals such as the elderly, children, people with asthma, people with heart or lung conditions, pregnant women and anyone who is exercising or working hard outdoors.   Aleise Whitlock, APRN, Section Chief for Renown Urgent Care advises that there are people more likely to be affected when fine particle pollution reaches an unhealthy level, including: People with asthma or breathing conditions like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. People who have heart disease or high blood pressure. Children and older adults. People doing extended or heavy physical activity like playing sports or working outdoors. “Everyone should take precautions when the air quality is unhealthy. Air pollution can aggravate heart and cardiovascular disease as well as lung diseases like asthma and COPD. When the air quality is unhealthy, people with these conditions may experience symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, or fatigue. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, use your inhalers as directed and contact your health care provider,” says Ms. Whitlock. “If you do not have a health care provider, we are happy to see you. Renown Urgent Care offices are on almost every corner, with providers ready to see you.” She advises to take it easy and listen to your body, and: Limit, change, or postpone your physical activity level. Drink plenty of water.  Stay away from local sources of air pollution like busy roads and wood fires. Use a damp cloth or mask to reduce smoke inhalation if you must go outside. If you have asthma or other breathing conditions like COPD keep your relief/rescue inhaler with you. People with asthma should review and follow guidance in their written asthma action plan. Make an appointment to see your health provider to be sure you have an asthma action plan. When to Visit the Emergency Department Bret Frey, MD, President, Western Emergency Physicians and Renown Health Emergency Departments, says, “Seek emergency care if you or someone you know is experiencing any of the following symptoms due to smoke exposure: Severe shortness of breath or difficulty breathing-If breathing becomes labored or painful, you cannot catch your breath even after resting, this may be a sign of serious respiratory distress. Chest pain or tightness- Any discomfort in the chest, particularly if it is associated with breathing, should be evaluated immediately.  Persistent coughing or wheezing- If a cough doesn’t improve or worsens, or if you develop wheezing, you should seek emergency medical attention.  Confusion, dizziness or fainting- These can be signs of oxygen deprivation, and immediate care is critical. Bluish lips or face- A clear indicator that oxygen levels are dangerously low and emergency medical treatment is needed.  Burns or smoke inhalation from a fire- Individuals who have been exposed to fire, or smoke in a confined space, should be evaluated for potential lung damage and other complications.  “Even just one hour of smoke exposure can affect our lungs and hearts, and these consequences can reach people far beyond the direct area endangered by the fire. Children, older adults, pregnant women, people with preexisting cardiopulmonary disease, communities of color, economically disadvantaged communities, and people with preexisting chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, and obesity are all especially vulnerable to the air pollution that wildfires cause," says Dr. Frey.     Three More Renown Urgent Cares Now Accepting Patients with Medicaid for a Total of Six Locations Across Northern Nevada

    Renown Health now offers urgent care services to patients with Medicaid insurance at the locations on USA Parkway, Los Altos and in Carson City.  Renown’s 10 Urgent Care locations see patients 365 days a year for medical concerns that are urgent but not life-threatening. Renown has recently expanded the number of urgent care sites accepting Medicaid insurance to include the USA Parkway, Los Altos and Carson City locations.     Let Those Ears Breathe! Increased Headphone and Ear Bud Use Leads to Ear Wax Build Up; Renown Urgent Cares Offer Relief

    Wearing headphones or earbuds is a daily activity for many of us. Listening to music, podcasts, meetings, phone calls; there are endless reasons to stick them in or on your ears. However, if your ears start to feel plugged, full; or you feel dizzy, lightheaded or hear ringing in your ears; you may be experiencing ear wax build up where your ear canals become blocked and affect your hearing. If you’ve tried to clean your ears (please don’t use Q-Tips®), but still have symptoms, pain, or hearing loss, it’s time to see your physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant or visit Renown Urgent Care. “Ear wax isn’t dirty. It’s normal,” says Ryan Bristol, APRN, Advanced Practitioner of Nursing at Renown Urgent Care. “Ears are self-cleaning miracles, and naturally clean themselves with the help of jaw movement and skin migration. However, wearing headphones or earbuds for hours blocks earwax from naturally draining from the ear. Additionally, the dirt and bacteria that these headphones often carry can cause an infection on their own, and earwax buildup can trap dirt in the ear and block the canal completely. What is ear wax and why is it healthy? Ear wax is a protective substance called sebum made of fat, skin cells and sweat. Ear wax is produced by glands in the ear canal. It helps protect the ear from germs and dirt and prevents the sensitive skin of the ear canal from becoming irritated. It is normal and healthy to have a thin lining of ear wax on the canal. Ear wax will sometimes accumulate and move to the outer ear canal, where it would typically fall out or be wiped away. This is also normal. When should I seek care? An ear canal has too much wax if the ear feels plugged or hearing is affected. The accumulation of wax happens very gradually, so ears do not necessarily feel waxy. The problem is usually noticed because of changes in hearing. Over the counter remedies may offer relief. However, in some cases, the earwax has built up or become impacted, and ears need to be treated. What is the treatment? How can I prevent earwax buildup from headphones and ear buds? Most people who wear headphones or use earbuds occasionally or intermittently don’t have difficulties with excessive ear wax. Wax accumulation also depends on the size of the ear canals and the productivity of the oil glands in the ear canal. You can choose to use over the ear headphones. If you prefer to use in-ear headphones, the best modes of excess ear wax prevention are to: Clean headphones and earbuds regularly with a cloth or disinfectant wipes; Avoid sharing headphones or earbuds with other people; Take breaks from headphones and earbuds so ears can breathe and get back to normal; Pay attention to your ear health. Should we talk about Q-tips? Yes! Q-tips (and similar products) are rarely helpful for managing ear wax. The cotton on the end of the Q-tip is usually unable to pull the wax out of the canal. Worse, they can push the wax deep inside the ear canal, and it can end up impacted. Where should I seek care? Individuals experiencing symptoms such as ear pain, decreased hearing, or a sensation of fullness in the ears are encouraged to seek evaluation and treatment at a medical facility. By addressing ear wax build-up promptly, individuals can mitigate the risk of complications and maintain optimal ear health. Today, Renown Health announced the opening of the Renown Transfer and Operations Center (RTOC). Powered by Renown doctors, nurses, technicians and national technology partners, this state-of-the-art facility helps ensure seamless care for patients and providers for 27 counties across northern Nevada, Lake Tahoe and northeast California. The Transfer and Operations team ensures a better experience for every Renown patient and family. Through this highly coordinated care logistics system, Renown is now able to customize health care to the needs of every patient; delivering the right care, at the right time and place across the integrated delivery system. This system enables providers to provide care closer to home, in lower-cost ambulatory, outpatient surgical and skilled nursing settings- instead of the hospital, and to deliver a sizeable portion of care to patients- where they want to be- in their homes. Not only will this advanced technology improve the patient’s experience, recovery and clinical outcomes, it also preserves the critical care beds at Renown for those who are most in need of specialized quaternary care. We will assist our rural partners in keeping patients in their home communities, close to family support and their primary care providers.” “Remote ‘hospital at home’ monitoring systems are a game-changer in improving patient care at Renown,” said Mitchell Fong, Director, Telehealth. "We are now able to provide appropriate patients with a telehealth solution using wearable, continuous pulse oximetry, allowing patients the convenience of being in their own homes, with the confidence and security of knowing that Renown clinical staff are closely monitoring their health data, and regularly communicating with them through their recovery process.” The Transfer and Operations Center spans 6,000 square feet, and is one of the largest centers of its kind in the nation, equipped with 28 high-definition dashboards on the front wall, two in the center of the room and four hanging monitors toward the back. Large plasma screens display important metrics such as patient vital signs, bed availability, facility capacity, staffing, technology and more. Registered Nurses and dispatchers continuously monitor activity around the clock, across Renown’s 100,000 square mile service area, 100+ locations and partner facilities to make the best decisions for patients, providers and care teams. "In addition to offering the most advanced technology, the team supporting the Transfer and Operations Center works in the most beautiful setting; one that inspires good health. The Center features large windows with views of the surrounding mountains, natural light, sound proof barriers, under-desk exercise equipment, a full kitchen and guest hoteling work spaces,” said manager, Kelli McDonnell, MSN, RN. “All these elements contribute to building a collaborative and enjoyable work environment for our health care teams to do their best work.” Benefits of the Renown Transfer and Operations Center include: Coordinating all incoming patients transferred from neighboring hospitals and 27 counties across northern Nevada, Lake Tahoe, northeast California and neighboring states, as well as direct patient admissions into Renown Health and partner ambulatory, outpatient surgical, skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities; Matching patients to the most appropriate bed placement using diagnostic, triage and Epic electronic medical record clinical information in conjunction with medical staff expertise to outline a plan of care that determines the best bed assignment given the patient’s needs, matching this to the most appropriate unit or facility, and estimating a discharge date. Dashboard metrics measure efficiency — including patients receiving treatment, being admitted or ready for departure, the number of procedures performed and the quantity of laboratory and radiological services performed; Providing in-house hospitality. An environmental service dispatcher ensures that every patient receives a clean and sanitized hospital room in a timely manner, and a centralized transport dispatcher provides patients with smooth and efficient transport to the right place at the right time. Patients may receive additional transportation assistance as needed, as they depart the hospital for home or another sub-acute care facility; and a REMSA Health "care coordinator" may arrange for air flight or ground emergency medical services as needed. Coordinating Video-Enabled Telehealth monitoring capabilities for Renown’s four Intensive Care Units (ICUs), facilitating clinical collaboration and communication around all aspects of patient care, as well as Renown patient Telehealth and virtual visits. Monitoring Remote Home systems with Masimo, where some patients may now receive hospital-level care in the comfort of their own homes while Renown clinicians monitor and evaluate their data and plan of care. Serving emergency and disaster management for area hospitals, first-responders and the community with local, regional and statewide emergency and disaster management for sudden-onset emergencies.
