Why Mammograms Are Vital for Early Breast Cancer Detection | Renown Health
Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women in the U.S. each year, making early detection crucial in improving the chances of successful treatment. Early Detection for Treatment and Peace of Mind Mammograms are noninvasive X-rays used to detect cancer and other abnormalities in the breast. They are the most effective screening tool for detecting breast cancer early, allowing for timely treatment before the disease can spread and helping to improve treatment outcomes. To help guide you through the mammogram process, we spoke with Elizabeth Kang, PA-C, at Renown Breast Surgery Care to equip you with expert knowledge on what to expect and why screening is so important. How Accurate are Mammograms? 3-D mammography technology at Renown Breast Health Center can detect 41% more cancers and reduce the number of false-positive results compared to plain film mammography. Benefits of 3-D mammography include: Providing better, clearer images, with higher diagnostic accuracy Allowing radiologists to see more abnormalities in the breast Helping doctors spot more cancers and avoid false positives, especially if you have dense breast tissue Reduced callback rates for findings on screening Mammogram Screening and Breast Exam Recommendations Renown Women's Health recommends the following breast exam guidelines: Age 18-39: Consult your primary care provider for a Risk Assessment and start breast exams at age 25. Age 40+: Get your annual mammograms. Family history: Begin screening 10 years before your youngest family member's age at diagnosis. For example, start at age 35 if a family member was diagnosed at 45. Self-awareness: Be familiar with the look and feel of your breasts and report any changes to your care provider. Age 75+: Continue annual mammograms if life expectancy exceeds five to seven years. What screenings are available for women with breast implants? Women with breast implants can and should still receive mammograms, and it’s essential to have these screenings done by an experienced team. Be sure to inform your healthcare provider and mammogram technicians about your implants, as they may recommend special techniques or steps to detect abnormalities and ensure accurate results.

Reno Home to "Great Psychiatry and Mental Health Program;" Renown and UNR School of Medicine Named to Becker's National List
Becker’s list of Hospitals and Health Systems with Great Psychiatry and Mental Health Programs for 2023 has been published, recognizing professional healthcare leaders across the country. Renown Health and the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine have been recognized among the top programs in the United States. This acknowledgement reflects a commitment from a dedicated team of experienced local professionals providing comprehensive mental health services and advancing the field of psychiatry. In their announcement, Becker’s highlighted that, “In 2018, a $6 million donation (by the Stacie Mathewson Foundation), funded the creation of the Stacie Mathewson Behavioral Health & Addiction Institute at Renown Health. The institute was formed to address increased prescription drug-related mortality rates and suicide rates in northern Nevada. The department is now fully integrated with University of Nevada School of Medicine's psychiatry residency, child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship programs, and behavioral sciences and clinical psychiatry medical student training. The curriculum emphasizes the value of psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, and interventional psychiatry methods, along with primary care team integration.” Becker’s editors noted that, “Innovative public and private partnerships with the state include the SOAR early intervention treatment program for those experiencing their first episode of psychosis. A 24-hour crisis stabilization center will open in 2024 for adults with mental health or substance use issues. The Connect Washoe County mental health collaborative, part of the hospital’s community benefit program, hosts the Youth Mental Health Summit, with a number of interventions resulting in reduced use of street and prescription drugs, lower hospitalization rates due to opioid overdose, and fewer cases of intentional suicide mortality in youth.” “We are honored to be recognized as one of the top psychiatry and mental health programs in the U.S. This achievement reflects the dedication of our integrated team and our unwavering commitment to enhancing the lives of individuals and families affected by mental health challenges. We will continue to strive for excellence and address the diverse needs of individuals struggling with behavioral health issues, said Takesha Cooper, MD, Department Chair of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. “Our team comprises skilled psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists and support staff who collaborate to provide holistic and integrated care for our patients. As the region’s only not-for-profit health system, together with the support of grateful donors like Stacie Mathewson, we will continue to actively engage in outreach initiatives to raise awareness about mental health, reduce stigma and create a community that fosters healing and support.” Renown Health also earned Forbes' Best Healthcare Employer in Nevada for combatting burnout and ensuring well-being and safety of caregivers. As IV Fluid Shortages Continue Across Nation, Renown is Prepared
Systems are in place at Renown Health to increase inventory tracking, optimize the distribution of available supplies, and improve communication to ensure that critical areas receive priority access. Healthcare facilities across the country are implementing conservation plans and warning the public of potential disruptions in elective surgical procedures since Baxter International temporarily closed a large IV fluid manufacturing site in Marion, North Carolina as a result of hurricane Helene. The Marion factory supplied 60% of the nation's IV fluids to health facilities. As the nation braces for the full impact of this IV fluid shortage, Renown Health continues to prepare for our community. Renown is actively implementing measures to conserve its supply of IV fluids, an essential component in patient care across multiple departments. Renown continues to provide urgent, emergency and critical care as the region’s only Level 2 trauma center for adults and children across northern Nevada, Lake Tahoe and northeast California, and continues to monitor the evolving situation while performing and successfully scheduling medically necessary procedures. Renown serves one million residents across 100,000 rural square miles from Salt Lake City to Sacramento, providing 70% of inpatient care and 73% of Medicaid and uninsured care across the region, and serves as the safety net system for the northern Nevada community. “Out of an abundance of caution, Renown has deployed the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS) to address the ongoing IV fluid shortage and to increase inventory tracking, optimize the distribution of available supplies across departments, and improve communication to ensure that critical areas receive priority access,” says Amy McCombs, MSN, RN, Chief Operations Officer for Renown Regional Medical Center and Incident Commander for the Hospital Incident Command System. “In addition, we are working closely with suppliers, state and national healthcare agencies to mitigate the impact of the IV fluid supply shortage on patient care.” “At this time, based on the current IV fluid inventory, physicians and care teams at Renown Regional Medical Center and Renown South Meadows Medical Center are taking immediate action to ensure that we can continue to deliver safe and effective care to our patients,” says Ms. McCombs. “Patient care remains our top priority, and we are committed to navigating this situation responsibly and transparently. We areworking with our partners to ensure consistent access to our vital services,” says Bill Plauth, MD, Chief Medical Officer for Renown Health. “We thank our surgeons and care teams for their exceptional care, having diligent oversight of the conservation of IV products and working collaboratively to ensure that access to high quality patient care is available for our community.” For up-to-date information on Renown’s approach to keeping our community safe, visit our website at renown.org/IV-Fluid-Response.
