    To offer best-in-class dining, hospital food you can get excited about and custodial services at all 4 hospitals this summer Renown Health announces a partnership with Sodexo, an international leader in hospitality, food services and facilities management, to bring best-in-class dining and custodial services to all four of its hospitals this summer. Current Food & Nutrition Services and Environmental Services staff have been offered first priority employment with Sodexo. No jobs are being eliminated as part of this transition. Renown Health and Sodexo are collaborating to provide all 27 6 Food & Nutrition and Environmental Services Associates with an opportunity to become Sodexo Associates.     Dr. Rahul Mediwala Promoted to Chief Medical Officer

    Dr. Mediwala’s leadership through challenging times helps Renown to thrive despite uncertainty ofCOVID-19 pandemic Rahul Mediwala, MD, CPE, has been promoted to Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the Health Services Division at Renown Health after serving as interim CMO since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, working tirelessly to lead a team on the frontlines who continued to provide quality and compassionate care to our community through the uncertainty and pressure of the pandemic. Dr. Mediwala has been with Renown for 11 years, originally joining Renown Medical Group to lead the nephrology program and as medical director for the dialysis unit. Over the years, he has taken on additional leadership roles for Renown Medical Group; serving as chair of Medical Specialties, and Chief Medical Officer for the Renown Accountable Care Organization. “I am thankful for our team of physicians, care providers, medical assistants, patient access representatives, administrators and all who have worked through change to continue to make a genuine difference in the health and well-being of the people and communities we serve,” said Dr. Mediwala. “I look forward to continuing to lead this talented team at Renown as we work to find how we can adapt to meet the changing needs of our health system and community to thrive into the future.” Dr. Mediwala has a bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M in biomedical engineering, his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Texas and served as chief resident for Internal Medicine at University Hospitals in Cincinnati and subsequently completed a nephrology fellowship in Cincinnati.     First Student Welcomed to Medical Assistant Program at Renown

    As the need for Medical Assistants grows, graduating Hug High Health Science Academy senior, Ana Hernandez Rodriguez, starts NHSE sponsored Renown Medical Assistant apprenticeship at TMCC According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of Medical Assistants is projected to grow 19 percent from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations. The growth of the aging baby-boom population continues to increase demand for preventive medical services here in Nevada and across the country. An increasing number of group medical practices, clinics, and other healthcare facilities also need medical assistants to perform administrative and clinical duties. Medical assistants work mostly in primary care, a steadily growing sector of healthcare. With an eye towards this future, Renown Health proudly accepted its first student, Ana Hernandez Rodriguez, a graduating senior from Procter R. Hug High School’s Health Science Academy CTE program in Washoe County, into its newly created Medical Assistant apprenticeship program. Ana will begin the program as a full-time employee with benefits and start her apprenticeship coursework at Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC). Sponsored by the Nevada System for Higher Education (NSHE), Renown’s Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program was approved by the Nevada State Apprenticeship Council, which was overseen by the Governor’s Office of Workforce Innovation (OWINN), in February. The Renown Medical Assistant Apprenticeship is a one-year competency-based program that includes up to 2,000 hours of On-the-Job training and 193 hours of Related Technical Instruction offered through TMCC. All classroom, clinic and work time is paid. Apprentices work under the supervision of a Medical Assistant, Registered Nurse, or medical provider to assist in responsibilities including escorting the patient from the waiting room to the examination room, taking vital signs, stocking supplies, placing and receiving phone calls including appropriate documentation in the Electronic Medical Record, preparing lab specimens for processing, completing the necessary referral forms, obtaining authorizations and keeping records for referrals. Upon completion of the program, apprentices complete the final exam to become a National Certified Medical Assistant. “NSHE is proud to serve as the apprenticeship program sponsor and create more apprenticeship opportunities like this program throughout Nevada,” said Cheryl Olson, NSHE Apprenticeship Navigator and Director of the Nevada Alliance for Youth Apprenticeship. “We welcome Ana as she joins our extraordinary team of healthcare professionals at Renown,” said Tony Slonim, MD, DrPH, President & CEO of Renown. “We are always looking to support and invest in the next generation of health professionals to address the health needs of our community. Medical Assistants serve an essential role in physician offices, hospitals and other healthcare facilities performing important administrative and clinical responsibilities and assisting in medical care including greeting patients, recording medical histories and vital signs and helping to coordinate care.” According to the US Department of Labor “Projections Central” the demand for Medical Assistants in Nevada will increase by over 25% by 2028, with over 260 job openings available per year. On the importance of apprenticeship programs like Renown’s Medical Assistant program, NSHE Chancellor Melody Rose said, “The Nevada System of Higher Education is committed to promoting more attainable, affordable, and innovative pathways toward successful careers in fields like healthcare, advanced manufacturing, and information technology through apprenticeships. Programs such as the Renown Medical Assistant apprenticeship are changing how we think about accessing higher education and offering true ‘Learn and Earn’ pathways.” Ana’s acceptance into the Medical Assistant apprenticeship program is a proud moment for her soon-to-be alma mater. “Ana has earned this opportunity through hard work and dedication to her studies,” said Melissa Osterhage, who teaches health sciences at Procter Hug High School. “She is a compassionate, caring, and intelligent young woman, and I look forward to seeing everything she will accomplish as she moves forward in a career in the medical field. I couldn’t be more proud of her, and I am grateful she has been awarded this apprenticeship.” Ana graduates from Hug High on June 22 and starts her Medical Assistant apprenticeship program just a few days later on June 29, and is excited for her future. "Being accepted to this opportunity at Renown has been amazing and wonderful. When they told me I was accepted, I was so excited that I cried because I felt so blessed. This is going to help my future in so many ways. It is going to give me the opportunity to work in the medical field. I will start as a Medical Assistant and my goal is to work toward becoming a registered nurse. I took a leap of hope and made it. So, I tell others- believe in yourself and you can accomplish anything in life," she said.     Department Spotlight: Outpatient Cardiology

    Celebrate American Heart Month this February with the Outpatient Cardiology department at Renown Health!  The heart provides life for us every day. After all, without a functioning heart, there would be no human life to begin with. Therefore, keeping it beating healthily - is not a luxury – it's a necessity. For such a vital everyday organ, there is a team - specifically dedicated to taking care of your heart, well, every day!  Meet the Outpatient Cardiology team, a member of the Renown Institute for Heart and Vascular Health. Being treated for a heart condition is one step – ongoing maintenance is another. And this is the team to help patients do exactly that: stay on top of their heart health so they can continue to live their lives to the fullest.  The Heartbeat of Patient Care Renown Health’s Outpatient Cardiology team is a group of passionate professionals united by a common mission: to provide exceptional, compassionate care that empowers patients on their heart health journey.  On the provider side of the coin, our cardiology physicians and nurse practitioners work together to ensure that patients with heart issues, especially electrical heart conditions such as arrhythmias, are given precise care. Their role involves diagnosing and managing their patients’ care to improve treatment plans, all aided by talented nurses and medical assistants.  “My day primarily consists of electrical issues of the heart,” said Michael Thompson, APRN, Clinical Nurse Specialist. “I do see general cardiology and heart failure needs as well, as all of these can have overlap.”  In Outpatient Cardiology, technology is king. In fact, this department is home to special equipment tailored specifically for heart care patients. The work of our monitor technicians and cardiac device coordinators is key in making sure that heart data is accurately captured, which helps our providers make informed decisions about patient care.  “I enroll all the mail/ship outpatient cardiac monitors as well as take care of any phone calls and MyChart questions or issues,” said Dolly Sevigny, Cardiology Monitor Technician. “My afternoon consists of placing the Cardiac Heart Monitor on patients and monitoring removals if patients are uncomfortable doing this themselves.   Every good department is backed by a stellar front-office team, and Outpatient Cardiology is no different. Their patient access representatives are often the first point of contact for patients, setting the stage for a positive experience at the office.  “We are the front line of Outpatient Cardiology; we are the faces all the patients see first,” said Brittney Hughes, Patient Access Representative Lead. “It is important for us to make a good impression and make every patient feel welcome. We handle insurance questions, scheduling, being on the lookout for symptomatic patients and much more!”  Helping out behind-the-scenes, you’ll find the physician scheduling coordinators. They are experts at ensuring everything related to scheduling, billing and documentation runs smoothly so patients can rest assured that the administrative and financial aspects of their care are taken care of.  “In my role on the Outpatient Cardiology team, I handle a variety of tasks,” said Maddie Briede, Physician Scheduling Coordinator. “I ensure that the charges dropped into patient accounts after visits are accurate. I also manage the monthly work relative value unit (wRVU) process, gathering data from both Renown and outside facilities on what our doctors have read – like Echocardiograms, Stress Tests and EKGs – and create invoices for these facilities.”  As you can tell, like other health services at Renown, individualized care for each patient is a must for this department. By prioritizing patient-centered care and collaboration, the team strives to offer personalized care that meets each patient's unique needs.  “Patient care is always the most important component,” said Michael Thompson, APRN. “There is a collaborative approach with the mindset that the patient is always the first priority. Every patient is different and needs to be treated as such.”  We Have a Lot of Heart The heartfelt nature (pun intended) of the Outpatient Cardiology team can be felt from a mile away. Led by their caring and genuine attitudes, this team feels a special connection with Renown’s new mission, vision and values. Many of them agree that the value of Compassion resonates most with them – and for good reason.  “Renown's value of Compassion resonates with me the most because I believe that when you approach everything with compassion, all the other values naturally follow,” said Maddie Briede. “Acting with compassion in every interaction helps put people first, fosters strong collaboration and ensures that integrity and excellence are maintained in everything we do.”  “Compassion resonates with me,” added Brittney Hughes. “We on the front lines make sure every patient is cared for, and all questions have been answered. We really sympathize with every patient and their situation. Not one patient is the same.”  “Compassion and empathy are very important to me – to let every patient know that they are cared for and not forgotten.” added Dolly Sevigny. “Making a difference in their everyday lives is so rewarding.”  At Renown, our employee-led Culture Crew helps our teams bring our values to life. They are on a continual mission to discover the best ways that Renown can make a real impact on the way patients, team members and the community connect. Inspired by this mission, the Outpatient Cardiology started their very own Culture Crew, an initiative that has been well received by the entire team.  “One accomplishment I’m particularly proud of is the start of our team’s Culture Crew, which I serve as chair," said Maddie Briede. “It's been important to me to help create a space where we can get to know each other beyond just work, especially since we spend over 40 hours a week together. This initiative has been truly eye-opening, and I’ve loved working with the team to organize fun activities and events such as potlucks, snack bars and treasure hunts. It’s been rewarding to see my coworkers excited about something to look forward to outside of their usual responsibilities.   Collaboration is also a top Renown value and a value that this team takes seriously. After all, teamwork makes the dream work.  “I am most proud of our teamwork,” said Brittney Hughes. “We all pitch in where we can and fill in the gaps if we are short staffed. Our patient care is top of the line, and it shows through all of us!”  “I am most proud of the collaboration from everyone on our team, from inpatient to outpatient, and seeing the full circle of great care and the amazing outcome for our patients,” added Dolly Sevigny.  This department jumps at the opportunity to take advantage of cutting-edge technologies that improve patient outcomes, especially on the electrical cardiology side of things.  “I think the electrophysiology team is taking great strides to provide up-to-date, competent care for the community, bringing in the newest devices and procedures,” said Michael Thompson, APRN.  As the largest not-for-profit health system in the region, many of these team members feel drawn to Renown’s community impact and the opportunity to give back and care for those who need it. The non-profit mindset Renown carries inspires this team to go above and beyond every day for their patients.  “Being part of a not-for-profit health system like Renown is inspiring because it allows us to be a meaningful part of our community, providing care to those who truly need it,” said Maddie Briede. “It’s rewarding to know that the entire team – MAs, Device Team, RNs, leaders and providers – works together to make a difference in our patients' lives.”  “It makes me very proud that Renown is a not-for-profit organization,” added Dolly Sevigny. “I have had patients come from other states because they couldn't get help in their state due to insurance issues. Renown has saved many lives, including his. In the 17 or so years I have worked for Renown, I have always been very proud of where I work and have met some of the best people, coworkers and patients.”  With all that said, it’s obvious that not only do these professionals care for the heart, but they also have a lot of heart themselves as well. Through the pandemic, to be sure employees had the time should needed, leadership added 80 hours of sick time to employee’s sick banks as well as $0 copay for Teladoc behavioral health sessions and nutrition services (virtual). Educational Assistance Reimbursement, Student Loan Repayment, Continuing Education for Learners. Renown values and encourages employees to continue their education and supports career aspirations and goals. The education assistance program offers loan reimbursement and repayment opportunities as well as educational and financial guidance from experts. College tuition, certification and certificate reimbursement is provided for employees who are currently enrolled in college/university or taking the extra steps to receive a professional certification or certificate. Onsite Childcare & Adult Care Assistance. Figuring out the childcare puzzle has been a hurdle for working parents through the pandemic. Renown is one of a select number of health systems that offer onsite childcare. Renown Health Child Care Center welcomes employees' children ages six weeks to six years (and not yet in kindergarten). The center is licensed for 176 children and features 11 classrooms: three infant classrooms, four toddler and four preschool classrooms. Staff help parents with resources to find care for their children onsite, or with licensed daycare providers in the community. Employees increasingly are caring for older adults in their families. As a non-profit organization, employees are able to contribute to tax-free savings FSA accounts that cover dependent care for children and older adults. 7. Flexible Schedules and Locations. Renown now provides the ability for medical providers and employees to work on-site, hybrid and remotely. This year as many employees working remotely moved out of state to be closer to friends or family, Renown kept pace, employing a Professional Employment Organization called Tri Net, in a co-employment model to assist with national benefits and tax administration.     Renown Health just announced a new, digital tool designed to keep our community safe and healthy. Symptom Checker, which launched today, is a user-friendly, web-based platform that assesses patients’ symptoms and seamlessly directs them to the appropriate level of care within the Renown network. Symptom Checker can be accessed 24/7 by visiting Renown Symptom Checker. From there, a patient can identify the area of the body responsible for their discomfort, and specify their symptoms. Upon entering their symptoms, patients receive a detailed health summary and care guide, which helps them determine the most appropriate action to take. Patients are able to schedule a visit at a Renown location directly through the Symptom Checker portal.     Rainbow lights illuminate Renown’s iconic “LOVE” sculpture, and powerful employee stories shared during Pride Month. Reno, Nev. (June 16, 2020) –In celebration of Pride Month and Reno’s LGBTQ+ communities, Renown’s LOVE sculpture, a one-ton, welded aluminum artwork with letters 10-feet tall and eight-feet wide, will be illuminated by rainbow LED lights throughout the month of June. LOVE is located at Renown Regional Medical Center’s main entrance at 1155 Mill Street in Reno, Nev. and visible to vehicular and pedestrian traffic along the Mill Street and Ryland Street corridors.     Preparing For an Anticipated Surge of Patients Amidst COVID-19

    Across the country, we are seeing an increase in COVID-19 cases including significant surges in hospitalized patients in many communities. As our nation experiences the impact of this international pandemic, we at Renown Health are focused on preparing for what could occur in our own community.  We continue to safely screen, diagnose and care for patients with respiratory illnesses, including those at risk for COVID-19. We have been, and will continue to use, current local, national and international data, analytics, public data sets and predictive modeling. Based on these predictive models, we anticipate seeing a surge in hospital patient volumes over the next several weeks. We are preparing for potential patient census increases, requiring a planning effort that challenges us to think outside of the box. Serving this level of hospital patients, which is called a “surge” will challenge us to ensure we have the beds, procedure capacity and spaces that accommodate staff, technology, supplies, equipment and services to meet the needs of our patients. To meet the increasing needs, a new temporary patient care area will be created within the Mill Street parking structure to serve additional hospitalized patients at Renown Regional Medical Center. This location allows caregivers to remain on campus, and still have accessibility to existing hospital infrastructure such as lab, pharmacy, imaging, food services and other critical services. This solution also allows for an efficient level of care escalation and other emergent interventions as needed. Crews will begin construction shortly and will include will include flooring, electrical infrastructure, lighting, water, technology and wall partitions. This facility will be equipped with beds and basic patient care support equipment. Hospitals in other communities around the country have successfully taken this approach, including Vanderbilt University Hospital. All around the country, hospitals are implementing creative approaches to ensure patient care needs can be addressed. As the work continues in the Mill Street Parking structure, we will evaluate the best way to incorporate our media partners and our community in seeing what the finished alternate care site looks like.     Move Over, R2-D2. Germ-Zapping Robots at Renown Health Elevate Hospital Safety

    With the help of state-of-the-art, germ-removal technology, Renown Health touts another layer of protection to keep patients and staff safe. As hospitals around the country look for innovative ways to enhance quality patient care and eliminate the presence of germs and other bacteria, Renown Health’s four, germ-zapping robots are working around the clock to eliminate contagious superbugs in just minutes. The Xenex germ-zapping robots use pulsed xenon ultraviolet (UV-C) light that is 25,000 times more powerful than sunlight to effectively eliminate harmful superbugs, including coronavirus (COVID-19), Clostridium difficile (C. diff), MRSA, norovirus, influenza, measles and Ebola. The portable robots are used as an extra layer of patient protection and are brought into operating rooms and certain patient rooms after hospital staff have done a thorough cleaning of the area. Renown was the first in the region to use this technology back in 2015, and is now joined by hundreds of other hospitals nationwide also using the robots, including MD Anderson Cancer Center, Sharp and Stanford. The technology has been credited with helping U.S. facilities in healthcare and hospitality settings reduce their rates of infection. “Our germ-zapping robots are a testament to the best practices put in place at Renown Health to enhance patient and staff health,” said Chris Baker, director, facilities engineering at Renown. “They operate 365 days a year, and help contribute to the unprecedented sanitary conditions that we pride ourselves on throughout all of our healthcare sites.” Because the Xenex robots use UV light to disinfect rooms, they are able to reach every surface in the room and do not leave any chemical residue.
