Renown Health Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program Certified by American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Renown Health is proud to announce the certification of its pulmonary rehabilitation program by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). This certification is recognition of Renown Health’s commitment to improving the quality of life of patients by enhancing standards of care. Pulmonary rehabilitation programs are designed to help people with pulmonary problems (e.g., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD], respiratory symptoms, long COVID-19) recover faster and live healthier. Both programs include exercise, education, counseling and support for patients and their families. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, COPD impacts 16 million people across the United States, and 1 in 13 adults (7.5%) have “long COVID” symptoms, defined as symptoms lasting three or more months after first contracting the virus, and that they didn’t have prior to their COVID-19 infection. "We are thrilled to receive this certification from the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation for our pulmonary rehabilitation program at Renown South Meadows Medical Center. This recognition underscores Renown Health's unwavering dedication to providing the highest standards of care and improving the lives of our patients, no matter what life throws at them,” said Sam Weller, MHPA CEO of Renown South Meadows Medical Center and Renown Rehabilitation Hospital. “Our commitment to excellence shines through in every aspect of our programs, and this certification reinforces our ongoing mission to make a positive impact on the health and well-being of the people of northern Nevada." To earn this accreditation, Renown Health’s pulmonary rehabilitation program participated in an application process that requires extensive documentation of the program’s practices. AACVPR Program Certification is the only peer-review accreditation process designed to review individual programs for adherence to standards and guidelines developed and published by AACVPR and other related professional societies. Each program’s application is reviewed by the AACVPR Program Certification Committee, and certification is awarded by the AACVPR Board of Directors. "At Renown Health, our pulmonary rehabilitation program is designed with our patients in mind. Our focus includes physical exercise, extending to education, counseling and support for both patients and their families,” said John Lynn, Manager of Respiratory Services at Renown Health. “This AACVPR certification is a testament to our team's hard work and dedication in ensuring that individuals with pulmonary conditions receive the best possible care to enhance their quality of life." In 2018, AACVPR moved to an outcomes-based process with performance measurements that represent more meaningful outcomes. Therefore, AACVPR-certified programs are leaders in the cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation field because they offer the most advanced practices available and have proven track records of high-quality patient care. AACVPR Program Certification is valid for three years. Renown Health Recognized for Excellence with ACC Transcatheter Valve Certification
Renown developed processes to standardize patient care, increase quality measurement The American College of Cardiology has recognized Renown Health for its demonstrated expertise and commitment in treating patients receiving transcatheter valve repair and replacement procedures. Renown Health was awarded Transcatheter Valve Certification in February based on evaluation of the staff’s ability to meet standards for multidisciplinary teams, formalized training, shared decision-making and registry performance. The ACC’s Transcatheter Valve Certification is an external review and certification process that pairs with established national clinical databases to monitor patient safety and real-world outcomes related to transcatheter valve therapies. Participation in established national clinical databases such as the STS/ACC TVT Registry is required for hospitals interested in achieving Transcatheter Valve Certification. “Renown Health has demonstrated its commitment to providing northern Nevada with excellent heart care,” said Deepak L. Bhatt, MD, MPH, FACC, chair of the ACC Accreditation Management Board. “ACC Accreditation Services is proud to award Renown Health with Transcatheter Valve Certification.” The certification uses established national clinical measures to support clinical decisions and links process improvement to patient outcomes. Hospitals that achieve Transcatheter Valve Certification learn best practices for implementing evidence-based medicine to support patient-centered decision-making and can track key performance metrics to better identify opportunities for improvement. The nationally acclaimed Renown Institute for Heart & Vascular Health provides the region with top-tier cardiovascular care, including 11 cardiovascular specialties, 52 providers and 69,000 patient visits per year. “Renown was the first healthcare system in the region to offer our patients the minimally invasive Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) and in 2022 our team performed 128 TAVR procedures, exceeding the national TAVR quality average,” said Dr. Jayson Morgan, FACC, Director of Cardiovascular Services. “This advanced 60-to-90-minute procedure treats aortic stenosis, a progressive disease that affects the aortic valve in the heart. During the procedure, a new valve is inserted within the diseased aortic valve while the heart is still beating.” The ACC offers U.S. and international hospitals like Renown Health access to a comprehensive suite of cardiac accreditation services designed to optimize patient outcomes and improve hospital financial performance. These services are focused on all aspects of cardiac care, including transcatheter valve therapies. The heart care team also received Target: Heart Failure Honor Roll and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll. About 6 million U.S. adults are living with heart failure (HF), a number that is expected to increase to more than 8 million by 2030. Despite the name, HF doesn’t mean that the heart has stopped working – it means the heart is having a hard time pumping blood and oxygen throughout the body. While there’s no cure for HF, patients can live a quality life by working with their health care team to create and stick with a plan that may include medication, symptom monitoring and lifestyle changes. The Get With The Guidelines - Heart Failure quality achievement award is earned by hospitals that demonstrate a commitment to treating patients according to the most up-to-date guidelines as outlined by the American Heart Association. The end goal is to ensure more people in northern Nevada can experience longer, healthier lives.” Each year, program participants qualify for the award recognition by demonstrating how their organization has committed to providing quality care for HF patients. In addition to following treatment guidelines, Get With The Guidelines participants also provide education to patients to help them manage their HF at home. “We are pleased to recognize the leaders and teams at Renown Health for a strong commitment to caring for people with heart failure,” said Clyde W. Yancy, MD, MSc, MACC, FAHA, MACP, FHFSA, national chairperson of the American Heart Association Heart Failure systems of care advisory group and chief, division of cardiology at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine. “Hospitals that participate in Get With The Guidelines quality improvement programs often see better patient outcomes, fewer readmissions and lower mortality rates – a win for health care systems, families and communities.” Renown Health is also recognized on the American Heart Association’s Target: Heart FailureSM Honor Roll. Hospitals on the Honor Roll meet specific criteria that improves medication adherence, provides early follow-up care and coordination and enhances patient education. The goal is to further reduce hospital readmissions and help patients improve their quality of life in managing this chronic condition. Groundbreaking Historic Milestone: Renown Pioneers Histosonics Edison® System Delivering Histotripsy for Non-Invasive Liver Tumor Treatment
Renown’s Surgical Oncology team amongst the first to use HistoSonics' image guided histotripsy system to deliver non-invasive, personalized treatments for patients with liver tumors, thanks to a private donation. Watch this video to learn more about the technology. Renown Health announced today that the first patients have received targeted liver tumor treatments through the Edison® System histotripsy technology, which uses focused ultrasound waves to noninvasively destroy a designated tissue or tumor in the liver. This revolutionary technology represents a significant advancement in providing leading-edge surgical care to patients. Renown joins the Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins in being amongst the first in the country to offer this revolutionary non-invasive clinical procedure. Surgical oncologists Christos A. Galanopoulos MD, MBA, MSc, FACS; Nicholas Manguso, MD; and Randy Zuckerman, MD of the William N. Pennington Cancer Institute at Renown Health, are amongst the first physicians in the world trained to perform the procedure which destroys both primary and metastatic liver tumors, including those that can’t otherwise be removed surgically. Renown’s multidisciplinary team includes surgical oncologists, radiologists, oncologists and nurses who collaborate to provide comprehensive care tailored to each patient’s needs. “At Renown Health, we are constantly investing in our clinicians, essential services, and medical innovations to help keep care local,” said Brian Erling, MD, MBA, President & CEO for Renown Health. “We are grateful to a generous local donor, who provided us with a $1.4-million private donation to help purchase the equipment, training and to establish one of the few histotripsy programs in the U.S. at Renown. This non-invasive technology is a game changer in helping our liver surgeons and surgical oncologists to target and destroy malignant tissue in patients with either liver cancer or tumors that have spread to the liver from cancers based elsewhere in the body. This means people can now stay close to home and loved ones, and no longer need to leave Nevada for this type of advanced care.” “As a surgeon, it’s rewarding to offer a procedure where we can precisely destroy liver tumors without using a scalpel or needles, enabling a patient’s quick recovery while avoiding certain complications common with other modalities,” says Dr. Christos Galanopoulos, Chair, Department of Surgery at Renown Health, and one of the oncology surgeons trained to perform the HistoSonics procedure. “Histotripsy uses focused ultrasound waves to mechanically destroy targeted tissue, offering a promising alternative to traditional surgical methods. This non-invasive approach reduces recovery time, minimizes complications, and improves patient outcomes. We look forward to the role this innovative technology will have in our treatment plans going forward.” Revolutionary Technology “Histotripsy is a novel form of therapeutic ultrasound that precisely targets and liquefies tissue without damaging surrounding structures,” says Dr. Randy Zuckerman, surgical oncologist at Renown. “The system works by sending out focused ultrasound to targeted areas of tissue. The ultrasound energy creates pressure in the targeted tumor causing naturally existing gas bubbles to rapidly expand and collapse, helping break down and liquefy the targeted tissue. The entire process—from pre-treatment planning to real-time visualization—is assisted by advanced imaging technologies. We are confident that histotripsy will have a meaningful impact for patients suffering from unresectable liver disease, including liver tumors, and we are excited to share this advancement with our patients and community.” The HistoSonics Edison® System and histotripsy procedure allows for: Precision and Accuracy: Histotripsy targets only the tumor cells, sparing adjacent healthy tissue, which is particularly advantageous in treating tumors located near critical structures. Non-Invasiveness: As a completely non-invasive procedure, histotripsy eliminates the need for incisions, resulting in less pain and potentially faster recovery times for patients. Reduced Risk of Complications: With no need for surgical intervention, patients face a lower risk of infection, bleeding, and other post-operative complications commonly seen in more invasive procedures. Renown’s Commitment to Innovation “The introduction of histotripsy underscores Renown Health’s dedication to staying at the forefront of medical advancements,” says Bill Plauth, MD, Chief Medical Officer for Renown Health and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine. “By continually investing in the latest technologies and treatment modalities, we can ensure that patients receive the highest standard of care - right here in Reno.” Clinical trial results recently shared by the company showed that physicians were able to achieve a technical success rate of 95.5% in targeting and destroying malignant tissue in 44 patients with either liver cancer or tumors that had spread to the liver from cancers based elsewhere in the body. Thanks to the Generosity of Our Community "Through the generosity of our community, we are working to provide the best expertise, technology and programs for our patients,” said Greg Walaitis, Chief Development Officer, Renown Health Foundation. “As the only charitable, not-for-profit integrated academic healthcare organization in Reno, we appreciate that our community has helped us further our healing mission." The FDA has not evaluated the Edison System for the treatment of any specific disease or condition. Use of Edison System in kidney applications is limited by federal law to investigational use. About HistoSonics HistoSonics is a privately held medical device company developing non-invasive platforms and proprietary sonic beam therapy utilizing the science of histotripsy, a novel mechanism of action that uses focused ultrasound to mechanically destroy and liquify unwanted tissue and tumors. The company is currently focused on commercializing their Edison System in the US and select global markets for liver treatment while expanding histotripsy applications into other organs like kidney, pancreas, and others. HistoSonics has offices in Ann Arbor, Michigan and Minneapolis, MN.
