Renown Celebrates Pride Month and LGBTQ+ Communities with Love

Rainbow lights illuminate Renown’s iconic “LOVE” sculpture, and powerful employee stories shared during Pride Month. Reno, Nev. (June 16, 2020) –In celebration of Pride Month and Reno’s LGBTQ+ communities, Renown’s LOVE sculpture, a one-ton, welded aluminum artwork with letters 10-feet tall and eight-feet wide, will be illuminated by rainbow LED lights throughout the month of June. LOVE is located at Renown Regional Medical Center’s main entrance at 1155 Mill Street in Reno, Nev. and visible to vehicular and pedestrian traffic along the Mill Street and Ryland Street corridors. Dr. Tony Slonim, president and CEO of Renown says, “At Renown, we are proud to support our LGBTQ+ communities. During Pride Month and beyond, we are honored to offer an inclusive, safe environment for our staff and patients—one that celebrates diversity in all its forms. The LOVE sculpture has already brought a bright light into our world, and I look forward to the joy it will bring to everyone who gets to see it in rainbow colors.”    In commemoration of Pride Month, Renown is committed to highlighting some of the LGBTQ+ individuals who make up a portion of its 7,000 employees. Sean Savoy, Renown’s manager of spiritual care, shares how his experiences as a gay man positively affect his career in spiritual healing and the compassion he shows others.     "The foundation of spiritual care is compassion – being with people in need by caring, supporting, and showing empathy, and promoting a sense of well-being,” said Savoy. Being a member of the LGBTQ+ community informs that deep sense of compassion and empathy in a very special and unique way.I have found the intersectionality of my gay and spiritual selves has been a blessing in my life."  Created by artist Laura Kimpton and fabricated by Jeff Schomberg, the LOVE sculpture first appeared at Burning Man in 2019. Thanks to a partnership with non-profit Artown, the sculpture debuted at Renown in April of 2020, and since served as a symbol of hope and determination for hospital staff, patients and community members amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Generous donors and the Renown Health Foundation funded the sculpture’s instillation.   ###   About Renown Health  Renown Health is a locally governed and locally owned, not-for-profit integrated healthcare network serving northern Nevada, Lake Tahoe and northeast California. Preparing For an Anticipated Surge of Patients Amidst COVID-19

Across the country, we are seeing an increase in COVID-19 cases including significant surges in hospitalized patients in many communities. As our nation experiences the impact of this international pandemic, we at Renown Health are focused on preparing for what could occur in our own community.  We continue to safely screen, diagnose and care for patients with respiratory illnesses, including those at risk for COVID-19. We have been, and will continue to use, current local, national and international data, analytics, public data sets and predictive modeling. Based on these predictive models, we anticipate seeing a surge in hospital patient volumes over the next several weeks. We are preparing for potential patient census increases, requiring a planning effort that challenges us to think outside of the box. Serving this level of hospital patients, which is called a “surge” will challenge us to ensure we have the beds, procedure capacity and spaces that accommodate staff, technology, supplies, equipment and services to meet the needs of our patients. To meet the increasing needs, a new temporary patient care area will be created within the Mill Street parking structure to serve additional hospitalized patients at Renown Regional Medical Center. This location allows caregivers to remain on campus, and still have accessibility to existing hospital infrastructure such as lab, pharmacy, imaging, food services and other critical services. This solution also allows for an efficient level of care escalation and other emergent interventions as needed. Crews will begin construction shortly and will include will include flooring, electrical infrastructure, lighting, water, technology and wall partitions. This facility will be equipped with beds and basic patient care support equipment. Hospitals in other communities around the country have successfully taken this approach, including Vanderbilt University Hospital. All around the country, hospitals are implementing creative approaches to ensure patient care needs can be addressed. As the work continues in the Mill Street Parking structure, we will evaluate the best way to incorporate our media partners and our community in seeing what the finished alternate care site looks like. We would like to send our sincere appreciation to our local partners in this project who have been working around the clock to make this work happen: Clark/Sullivan Construction, Curtis Bros. Construction, PK Electrical, Ainsworth Associates Mechanical Engineers, Intermountain Electric, Mt. Rose Heating & Air Conditioning and Frank Lepori Construction. Fitch Ratings Affirms a 'A+' Long-Term Rating for Renown Health

Fitch Ratings has affirmed the 'A+' long-term rating on the series 2020A, 2020B, 2015A and 2016A bonds issued on behalf of Renown Health by Public Finance Authority for Renown’s $469 million Master Facilities Construction Project which includes hospital campus improvements and new health care facilities across northern Nevada to meet the growing community need over the next three years. Given significant consumer demand for Renown providers and services, a master facilities planning process was undertaken to ensure that Renown has adequate bed and procedure capacity, spaces to accommodate new technology and services to meet the needs of a growing patient base and community. Fitch listed the following reasons for the A+ rating: Renown remains the single largest provider of high-end acute care services and is maintaining a leading market position, with approximately two thirds of all patients in northern Nevada seeking care at Renown. Renown has strong balance sheet metrics, which have seen a decline in 2022 partly due to operations, but also due to an equities market contraction. Fitch believes that Renown has detailed operational improvement plans, with quick hit expensive savings items along with a medium-term focus to recruit and retain staff (and reduce agency/traveler expenses) and also longer-term goals to accept more risk to stabilize their revenue stream, such that Renown will return to operating EBITDA margins in approximately the 7% range. Last week, Fitch Ratings adjusted its outlook for nonprofit hospitals from "neutral" to "deteriorating" halfway through what has proven to be a rough year for the industry. Likewise, Fitch's Rating Outlook for Renown Health has been Revised to Negative from Stable. The macro headwinds of labor pressures and high inflation were known heading into 2022 but “have been more pronounced than expected,” the ratings agency wrote in a midyear outlook report released Tuesday. “While severe volume disruption to operations appears to be waning, elevated expense pressure remains pronounced,” Kevin Holloran, senior director at Fitch Ratings, said in a release accompanying the outlook report. “Even if macro inflation cools, labor expenses may be reset at a permanently higher level for the rest of 2022 and likely well beyond.” Fitch said it’s expecting “a more manageable endemic period” for hospitals balancing COVID inpatient and welcoming the return of surgical and specialty care volumes that “have returned to near pre-COVID-19 levels in many markets.” On the other hand, uncertainty abounds during a pandemic that has shown its ability to resurge time and again, the agency wrote.   About Renown Health Renown Health is the region’s largest, locally governed, not-for-profit integrated healthcare network serving Nevada, Lake Tahoe and northeast California.
