Position Purpose

To assist Ophthalmologist to diagnose and treat eye disorders and disease in an outpatient and inpatient setting. This position will work with Adult, Pediatric and Geriatric patients.

 

Nature and Scope

1) Tests and measures eye function to assist Ophthalmologist to diagnose and treat eye disorders and disease: Tests patient's far acuity, near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, Fundus Photography, External Photography, Ocular Coherence Tomography and color perception to assist Ophthalmologist to diagnose and treat eye disorders and disease.

 

2) Examines eye, using slit lamp, for abnormalities of cornea, and anterior and posterior chambers.

 

3) Applies drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes.

 

4) Measures intraocular pressure of eyes.

 

5) Tests patient's field of vision, including central and peripheral vision, for defects, and charts test results on graph paper.

 

6) Measures axial length of eye, using ultrasound equipment.

 

7) Performs other tests and measurements as requested by physician.

 

8) Gives instructions to patients concerning eye care.

Name

Description

Education:

Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing and speaking English. Must complete a formal technologist school program or a formal hospital based training program. 

Experience:

Previous hospital experience preferred. One year as a Technologist preferred. 

License(s):

None.

Certification(s):

BLS certification required within 60 days of hire. Certified Ophthalmic Assistant preferred.

Computer / Typing:

Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computers skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
