Position Purpose

     The Division Chief of Hospital Medicine at Renown Health and the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Nevada, Reno, will provide strategic leadership and direction for all clinical, operational, and academic aspects of the division. The Division Chief will oversee strategic planning, policy, operations, and the educational, research, and clinical programs of the division. This role includes discretion in recruiting and retaining faculty, who will report directly to the Division Chief. The Division Chief is responsible for continuous quality improvement, clinical resource management, and serving as a liaison for medical staff activities. This position plays a lead role in patient safety, quality improvement, risk management, and efficient resource utilization based on evidence-based medicine. The Division Chief fosters strong relationships among senior management, physicians, and medical staff, ensuring effective communication and collaboration to support coordinated patient care. Additionally, the Division Chief provides leadership, guidance, and support for Division physicians and staff in accordance with medical staff bylaws.

     The Division Chief of Hospital Medicine reports to the Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Nevada, Reno for academic activities, and collaborates closely with Renown Health leadership for clinical operations at Renown Regional Medical Center and Renown South Meadows Medical Center. The Division Chief maintains strong relationships and frequent engagement with key stakeholders at Renown Health, UNR, and community partners to ensure high standards of patient care and clinical operations, including responsibility for inpatient clinical metrics. The successful candidate will fulfill the responsibilities of a faculty member in the Department of Internal Medicine, actively participate in teaching, clinical service, and scholarly work, and should qualify for an appointment at the rank of Associate or full Professor.

 

 

Nature and Scope

A. Clinical Quality

Collaborate with senior management and physician leaders to establish, implement, and evaluate quality indicators, quality improvement initiatives, and excellence in clinical practices.

Work with chairs, physician leaders, and the organized medical staff to establish and manage infrastructure and processes for cutting-edge clinical care supported by measurable outcomes.

Define and measure clinical and service quality, holding accountability for results.

Ensure the development and implementation of clinical protocols, policies, and procedures.

Build consensus and support for quality improvement projects and priorities.

B. Clinical Resource Management

Develop and implement effective clinical resource management processes in conjunction with the section chiefs and medical directors.

Implement clinical resource management programs based on patient needs and scope of services.

Help develop, implement, and utilize appropriate admission, discharge, and triage guidelines.

Work closely with case management, nursing, and medical staff to ensure relevant systems are in place for all patients to have an appropriate care plan and ongoing care coordination.

Serve as a lead for case management and participate in medical necessity determinations where required.

Support financial performance improvement through collaboration with hospital leadership, medical staff, and employees in areas such as standardization of equipment and supplies, optimal utilization of ancillary services, and cost-effective medical resource management.

Apply evidence-based medicine to ensure appropriate length of stay.

C. Liaison

Establish strong working relationships and leadership with the medical staff.

Serve as a key liaison with the organized medical staff and provide administrative leadership in various committees and work groups where needed.

D. Clinical Leadership

Provide oversight and management of employed physicians, including performance reviews and evaluation of clinical excellence and productivity measures.

Stay abreast of industry trends, analyze the healthcare industry environment, its impact on Medical Center policies and operations, and identify opportunities to anticipate and respond to those trends.

Lead the implementation and continued development of clinical processes to support evidence-based practice.

E. Medical Staff Activities

Oversee and participate in the review of patient care, enabling committees to work with the medical staff to monitor and continuously improve clinical performance.

Provide guidance to Renown Hospitalist Physicians and Leadership to achieve the Hospitalist Scorecard Fundamental Outcomes.

Monitor the effective implementation of Hospitalists service agreements within Renown Health entities/departments.

Serve in capacities designated to improve outcomes and processes within the Integrated Health Network.

Monitor and communicate results of the Renown Hospitalist Group activities to participating physicians, including routine monitoring activities and individual physician performance analysis.

Collaborate with the coding department to audit physician documentation compliance and provide coding education.

Assist in developing staffing plans to meet future growth strategies.

Responsible for the overall program development, outcomes, and reputation of the Hospitalist Program throughout Renown Health's Integrated Health Network.

Ensure quality accountability, including oversight of pay-for-performance management.

Manage behavioral aspects in congruence with the Acute CMO.

Balance cost and patient care quality in assessing staffing needs.

F. Academic Responsibilities

Actively participate in the teaching, precepting and mentoring of medical students, residents, and fellows.

Develop and implement educational and professional development programs within the Division of Hospital Medicine.

Foster an environment that encourages and supports scholarly activities, including research and publications.

Collaborate with academic leadership to align clinical practices with educational goals.

Participate in academic committees and contribute to curriculum development and assessment.

Promote and support faculty development and continuing medical education opportunities.

Engage in collaborative research projects, quality improvement projects, and/or other scholarly activities.

G. Direct Patient Care

This position involves some direct patient care.

Education:

Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing, and speaking English. Medical Degree from an accredited Medical School (M.D. or D.O.) required. Direct clinical experience in the practice of Hospital Medicine is required. Expertise in clinical operations is required. Experience in clinical research, quality improvement, and/or medical education/teaching highly desirable.

Experience:

Minimum five (5) years' experience as a physician clinician in a leadership and management role. Management and/or quality management education and training preferred. Expertise in process improvement and data analysis and the use of information systems to develop and support outcome measurement and management decisions. Has an established track record of accomplishments in medical management, particularly involving successful, collaborative work with physicians. Demonstrated project management skills with the ability to measure performance and identify goals, assemble, and lead effective teams, and achieve and maintain successful implementations. Additionally, this physician should have experience in healthcare quality, resource management, outcomes improvement and patient safety. There is an expectation that the physician will be able to work with sophisticated information systems and assist in their implementation in clinical settings. There is an expectation that this physician leader is well grounded in clinical medicine and an active life-long learner.

License(s):

Must possess and maintain a current and valid State of Nevada Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic (DO) medicine license.

Certification(s):

Board Certification in Internal Medicine required.

Computer / Typing:

Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams and Word and have the ability to use the computer for online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
