Position Purpuse: Provide comprehensive education to patients diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and/or Asthma. They utilize written education materials along with educational aides such as handouts, lung models, and videos as deemed appropriate. When applicable they provide referrals for pulmonary rehabilitation and pulmonary function testing. They act as a liaison to physicians and discharge planners to ensure proper length of stay, adequate education, and safe discharge. They provide follow-up care to answer questions and ensure appointments with primary care physicians are completed. In addition, they keep meticulous records to ensure patient continuity of care. This position has completed the AARC Pulmonary Disease Educator Course. Patient Education includes:

  • normal lung anatomy & physiology
  • Bedside pulmonary function testing
  • physiologic changes caused by COPD
  • medication classifications
  • the patient’s specific medication: what, when, where, how and why they take it (Action Plan)
  • recognizing the exacerbation vs. ‘bad day’ (Rescue Plan)
  • pulmonary rehabilitation and exercise
  • smoking cessation
  • oxygen use

Education:

Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing and speaking English.

 

Experience:

200241, 200373, 400241: Minimum 2 years' experience of full-time Respiratory Care in a critical care setting.

410241, 400281: Minimum 2 years of full-time Respiratory Care experience.

 

License(s):

Ability to obtain and maintain a State of Nevada Board of Medical Examiners Respiratory Care Practitioner License. Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from the National Board of Respiratory Care required.

 

200241, 200373, 400241: State of Nevada Point of Care Analyst license or equivalent as defined in NAC 652.346. To include Director of point of care, General supervisor of point of care, Clinical laboratory technologist, Blood gas technician, blood gas technologist required within 6 months of hire.

 

Certification(s):

Current AHA BLS certification required. AHA ACLS & PALS required with-in 6 months, and ongoing thereafter.

 

Computer / Typing:

Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computers skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
