Two pediatric gastroenterologists bring life-saving care to kids and make Renown their new home The Renown Children’s Hospital team and our community is celebrating the addition of a new life-saving pediatric specialty to its practice serving children and families in northern Nevada. Parents and guardians will now be able to seek professional pediatric gastroenterologist care with the addition of Drs. Juan Gregory and Kathleen Holland to Renown Medical Group. “Recognizing the importance of diagnosing and caring for children who have conditions that affect the organs in the digestive system, including the stomach, liver and bowel, while also helping children who have issues feeding and eating, is critically important to us at Renown,” said Kristina Deeter, MD, MBA, FAAP, Chair of Pediatrics, University of Nevada Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) and Physician-in-Chief, Renown Children’s Hospital. “Both Drs. Study From UNR Med and Renown in JAMA Network Open Highlights Gaps in Genetic Screening for Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer

Data demonstrates that a proactive approach to family history assessment and genetic screening will increase early detection of inherited risk. A new original investigation article published in JAMA Network Open, “Screening Familial Risk for Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer,” by authors from University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, Renown Health and Helix for the Healthy Nevada Project® emphasizes the critical need to increase genetic screening in identifying individuals at increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer due to family history. This landmark study calls for enhanced awareness, the adoption of genetic screening practices, and, importantly, the direct screening of family history by individuals using a simple tool such as the FHS-7 questionnaire.   Breast and ovarian cancers remain leading causes of cancer-related deaths, with genetic factors playing a key role in up to 10% of cases. The study authors advocate for wider adoption of screening protocols, simple family risk questionnaires and education about the benefits of genetic testing, not only for patients but also their family members who may share similar genetic risks.  Breast cancer is a leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society, about 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer and about 1 in 36 women will die from breast cancer. Since 1990, breast cancer death rates have declined progressively due to advancements in screening, treatment and detection. Here in Washoe County, Nev., the age-adjusted mortality rate for 2020 (last update) is 21 deaths/100,000 females due to breast cancer, which is higher and worse than the national U.S. value of 19.6. Nevada ranks near the bottom in breast and cervical cancer deaths in women according to a recent Commonwealth Fund report. Across the U.S., approximately 1.1 percent of women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer at some point during their lifetime. The research underscores that individuals with a family history of breast and ovarian cancer have a higher likelihood of carrying genetic mutations in genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, which significantly elevate their cancer risk. However, many at-risk individuals remain unaware of their genetic predispositions due to limited screening practices.  Evidence suggests that “up to 80% of patients with a pathogenic or likely pathogenic (P/LP) variant in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are unaware of their condition and subsequent risk for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. Rare or less penetrant P/LP variants in genes such as PALB2, CHEK2 and ATM are even less likely to be detected. This is concerning because the lifetime risk for breast cancer exceeds 50% for women with P/LP variants in BRCA1/2 and 20% for women in P/LP variants in PALB2, CHEK2 and ATM (compared with a baseline risk of 12%).” The study also found that men with family history are just as likely to have pathogenic variants in BRCA1 and BRCA2 as women.  This is important because not only are men at increased risk of breast, prostate and other cancers, these risks are passed on to daughters, nieces and other members of the family through inheritance. Men are under-represented in the Healthy Nevada Project® and other similar population health studies. Daniel Kiser, MS, lead author of the study stated, "Our work shows that family history collected during routine medical care can be evaluated using simple criteria and used to identify patients with elevated risk for inherited cancers. Because there are a number of steps that can be taken to reduce risk, both for the patient and for their family members, following up with these patients has the potential to substantially reduce mortality and the incidence of cancer." “Prevention or early detection of disease is such an important part of healthcare,” says Bill Plauth, MD, MMM, CPE, Chief Medical Officer for Renown Health and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine. “The Healthy Nevada Project® is leading the way in helping Renown Health physicians and clinicians assess family history risk of breast and ovarian cancer syndrome. This in turn, enables us to provide our at-risk patients the best available tools for prevention or to catch cancer at an earlier stage, which affords less aggressive treatment options with significantly improved survival.” The study found that routine genetic screening for individuals with a strong family history of these cancers could lead to more personalized and effective healthcare strategies, including preventative surgeries, increased surveillance, or early interventions. It also highlights the gap in awareness and access to genetic testing, particularly in underserved populations.  “One of the lessons from our work is the importance of assessing family history early and often in the healthcare journey of patients,” says Joseph Grzymski, PhD, Chief Genomics Officer of Renown Health, the Principal Investigator of the Healthy Nevada Project, and a faculty member in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine. “We recommend that everyone get screened for CDC Tier 1 conditions but particularly, when family history indicates risks, genetic screening is a powerful tool for risk stratification.” Key Recommendations from the Study Authors Include: Increased Engagement of Patients with Physicians: People with a family history should discuss their history with their primary care physician or health care provider and request a genetic screening. This proactive approach to prevention will save lives. Increased Access to Genetic Testing: The need for more accessible and affordable testing options, like the no-cost screening provided by the Healthy Nevada Project®, particularly for those with a family history of breast or ovarian cancer. Increased Pre-Screening and Genetic Counseling: Providing patients with the necessary counseling to understand the implications of genetic mutations and guide their healthcare decisions. Pre-screening patients with either a personal or family history of cancer with one of several simple family history tools, such as the FHS-7 Questionnaire to determine whether they should be referred for genetic services would also help increase early identification and reduce costs.  As of January 2024, the Healthy Nevada Project® had notified 330 individuals with P/LP variants in BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes of their genetic risk, of a study population of more than 53,000 patients. The Healthy Nevada Project®, powered by Renown Health and University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, is one of the largest genomic studies in the United States. The genomic study is at no-cost for Nevadans and gives participants insight into different genetic traits, as well as results on their predisposition for three prevalent and serious health conditions known as the CDC Tier 1 conditions because of their significant potential to positively impact public health. Study authors include University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, (Daniel Kiser, MS; Gai Elhanhan, MD Iva Neveux, MS; William J. Metcalf, MS; Catherine McCarthy, MD; Leslie A. Greenberg, MD; Joseph J. Grzymski PhD); Helix, Inc. San Mateo, CA (Alexandre Bolze, PhD; Elizabeth T. Cirulli, PhD) and Renown Health, Reno (Savanna Grime, BA; Jamie M. Schnell Blitstein, APRN; William Plauth MD; Joseph J. Grzymski PhD.  For more information on the study, please visit JAMA Network. For a media interview, please contact Dr. Joe Grzymski at news@renown.org.  The Healthy Nevada Project®, led by Renown Institute for Health Innovation (Renown IHI) was launched in September 2016 as one of the first community-based population health studies in the United States. The study has already enrolled, consented and collected DNA from approximately 53,000 participants. Under the program, researchers and physicians are using genetics, environmental data and individual health information to empower providers with a targeted approach to personal health care and treatment, in turn improving the overall health and well-being of people in the local communities.  The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, Nevada’s first public medical school, is a community-based, research-intensive medical school with a statewide vision for a healthy Nevada. Since 1969, UNR Med has trained more than 3,900 students, residents, and fellows. 8 Financial & Wellness Benefits for Employees

Listening to what employees need most now and for the future; ensuring families are healthy, financially secure The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate last week for the first time since March 2020. This will mean a higher cost of borrowing on credit cards, student and home loans, car financing and more. It could also mean more returns from savings accounts, depending on the institution. This news, coupled with concerns about mental health and physical well-being as caregivers come through the pandemic has presented leaders at Renown with a unique opportunity to reframe approaches to how to help their employees grow, feel financially supported and engage as part of a healthy and thriving team. After listening to concerns of employees and their leaders, Renown Health’s Human Resources department and leading industry partners have announced a number of additional benefits to promote ways to increase work/life balance; support rest-and-recuperation strategies, and new financial resources essential to sustaining happy, high-performing teams. Renown Health is hiring key roles to support the health and well-being of our community, and encouraging those with a passion for service to join the Renown family to Fight the Good Fight, by applying on line at careers.renown.org. Expanded and new employee benefits for 2022 include: 1. Expanded Physical Health, Medical and Dental Plan Benefits. The MOBE program, offered at no charge, offers each employee a personal Health Guide to support four core elements of health; diet, sleep, physical movement and emotional well-being to help build healthy habits, fuel a better life, provide energy and promote healing. This year, Renown expanded its Medical Plan coverage, adding new benefits, without increasing rates paid by employees. Renown offers health insurance benefits through Hometown Health, northern Nevada’s largest and only locally owned not-for-profit insurance company with wide-ranging medical coverage. Hometown Health offers access to the largest network and highest quality clinical services provided by 1,200 medical doctors and specialists in 150 sites of care, including those with Renown Medical Group; urgent care centers; lab and imaging services; and the state’s #1 Us News & World Report hospitals, Renown Regional Medical Center (2022) and Renown South Meadows Medical Center (2021). New medical benefits added this year include telehealth visits with a $0 copay; Renown Pharmacy prescriptions with no deductible; and if employees and their families need to travel out of the area for essential care, there is now a travel stipend offered for University Medical Center in Las Vegas or to University of Utah Health. The organization also reduced the cost for health insurance premiums paid by part-time employees (20-30 hours). In addition to improved health benefits, the dental network was expanded through MetLife Dental, with no increases in dental rate premiums paid by employees in 2022. As a non-profit organization, Renown is able to offer employees the ability to establish Flexible Spending Accounts as way to use tax-free dollars to pay medical expenses not covered by other health plans. 2. Enhanced Wellness and Mental Health support programs. Renown Health is home to the Stacie Mathewson Behavioral Health & Addictions Institute. As leaders, they are working to remove the stigma and barriers to using mental health services when needed; reinforcing that seeking help indicates strength, not weakness. This includes encouraging team members to take a day off to refresh and recharge or take advantage of confidential, mental health counseling visits at no charge. Renown updated their policy to include mental and emotional well-being as eligible for use of sick leave. Through the pandemic, to be sure employees had the time should needed, leadership added 80 hours of sick time to employee’s sick banks as well as $0 copay for Teladoc behavioral health sessions and nutrition services (virtual). Renown encourages physical fitness and inspires the health and well-being of employees by supporting participation in races (on foot or via bike) in their communities. Employee who race, run, walk, triathlon or bike may submit for reimbursement for an individual entry fee up to $100. 3. Appreciating and Engaging Employees. Many teams may now be working on-site, hybrid and remotely, which means getting together to make new memories is more complicated. Renown Health leaders continue to bring camaraderie and bonding into the workplace by investing in holding monthly Pride events for staff, hosting everything from online socials to game nights to help re-establish bonds. At Renown, employee engagement also takes the form of employee recognition programs. The Everyday Amazing program encourages employees to thank each other for outstanding service via an online platform, and earn certificates and points towards gift cards and prizes. Employee and organization-led leadership and career education programs are encouraged, as well as paid volunteer opportunities (four hours each quarter), and matches of up to $1000 for non-profit organization boards on which Renown Health employees serve. Renown offers events and yearbooks to help employees celebrate their history and accomplishments, as well as Celebrate Amazing, a special event to honor Service Milestones, Top Talent and Women of Achievement award winners. Renown supports the community and engages medical providers and employees to attend events with the Reno Aces, UNR football and basketball games, the Great Reno Balloon Race and hundreds of community events each year. 4. Living Debt Free with Financial Wellness Programs. A free financial wellbeing program from Salary Finance is available at no cost to employees, with a salary-linked loan product. This benefit enables employees to borrow or save money directly through their paycheck. Salary-linked loans allow employees to access affordable credit that they can easily repay through their salary, helping them pay down existing debt or avoid high-interest credit cards, overdraft fees, or payday loans. Salary Finance provides affordable borrowing options in times of need, as well as a financial education component, which helps employees understand their current level of financial content specific to their needs. Since launching, over 40% of employees have engaged with the Salary Finance offering, and over 500 have accessed affordable credit through Renown's custom-branded Salary Finance Financial Wellbeing Hub. “It has made a wonderful impact and has lessened my frequent stress regarding my debt," said a Renown employee enrolled in the program. In total, it is estimated that employees have saved nearly $275,000 on interest, and that number continues to grow as more employees take advantage of the benefit. The Greater Perks program from Greater Nevada Credit Union, the official credit union for Renown employees, offers a number of benefits including a $100 bonus for opening a new checking account, $25 when opening a new “I Can Save” account, $500 credit towards an appraisal for a home loan, low-cost rates on short-term personal loans and auto loans, and regular online financial wellness seminars. Membership with the credit union is not required to take advantage of Greater Nevada Mortgage’s offerings. In addition, donors have supported, through the Renown Health Foundation, funds for help employees who have suffered a personal financial catastrophe, and are in need for emergency funding to pay bills, with no repayment required. 5. Educational Assistance Reimbursement, Student Loan Repayment, Continuing Education for Learners. Renown values and encourages employees to continue their education and supports career aspirations and goals. The education assistance program offers loan reimbursement and repayment opportunities as well as educational and financial guidance from experts. College tuition, certification and certificate reimbursement is provided for employees who are currently enrolled in college/university or taking the extra steps to receive a professional certification or certificate. In addition, the organization supports employees who have previously completed their education and are now managing the burden of student loans. Employees also have the option to invest in a 529 college savings plan, an investment program designed to help people save for future education expenses for children/dependents at almost any private or public college or accredited higher education institution. 6. Onsite Childcare & Adult Care Assistance. Figuring out the childcare puzzle has been a hurdle for working parents through the pandemic. Renown is one of a select number of health systems that offer onsite childcare. Renown Health Child Care Center welcomes employees' children ages six weeks to six years (and not yet in kindergarten). The center is licensed for 176 children and features 11 classrooms: three infant classrooms, four toddler and four preschool classrooms. Staff help parents with resources to find care for their children onsite, or with licensed daycare providers in the community. Employees increasingly are caring for older adults in their families. As a non-profit organization, employees are able to contribute to tax-free savings FSA accounts that cover dependent care for children and older adults. 7. Flexible Schedules and Locations. Renown now provides the ability for medical providers and employees to work on-site, hybrid and remotely. This year as many employees working remotely moved out of state to be closer to friends or family, Renown kept pace, employing a Professional Employment Organization called Tri Net, in a co-employment model to assist with national benefits and tax administration. Renown is now able to recruit and retain remote employees from Maine to Minnesota and offer, for a wide range of positions in IT, finance and other support services, remote and flexible schedules that are attractive to many across the country. For clinicians, there are a large variety of positions now available at over 100 locations across the state. On March 7, Renown increased the cap of shift differential to 10% up to $6 an hour and added a weekend differential for staff for up to 5%. At Renown’s hospitals, there are employment positions available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to serve the community. Other providers and employees take advantage of a compressed workweek, 12-hour shifts and other options, which allow them the flexibility to live their best life at work and at home. 8. Renown’s Retirement Savings Plan. Retirement savings plans including a full 401(k) plan through Vanguard are available for employees to save for retirement. Employees can contribute from1-75% of pre-tax pay (up to annual IRS limit) and receive a matching contribution from Renown of 4% when you contribute 4% or more to a 401(k) plan. Rollovers of a former employer's 401(k), 403(b), 457 or other qualified plan can be made into a Vanguard plan at any time. A Renown Anesthesiologist's Unique Journey

Dr. Nariman Rahimzadeh’s career path has been anything but typical. From humble beginnings as a shuttle bus driver for Renown Regional Medical Center, then named Washoe Medical Center, to his service as Chief of Staff for Renown South Meadows Medical Center, the steps and detours he took along the way – and the strong support from his colleagues and family members – make up a tale of perseverance, conviction, compassion and inspiration.  However, his healthcare career journey began several years before he even joined Washoe Medical Center in the 1990s.  It all began 7,446 miles away in Iran.  This is Dr. Rahimzadeh’s story.  Defining Moments  The moment Dr. Rahimzadeh knew he wanted to dedicate his career to the healthcare field started during his childhood. Growing up in Iran during the midst of the Iranian Revolution, a thought that often came to mind was, “Who is helping all the people injured in the war?”  The answer? The doctors.  “In Iranian society, doctors are extremely valued, as they are the first to help people in need,” said Dr. Rahimzadeh. “I knew I wanted to give back to society in some way, and I see my time in Iran as very formative in my future career. I just didn’t know it yet.”  After immigrating to the U.S. with his family during his preteen years, he only had one mission: to support his family. “My desires were to help my family not fall behind,” he said. “I didn’t have career aspirations at the time. All I knew is that I wanted to help my family and my community, which immediately opened its arms up to us, as well as be a good student and a good ambassador for Iran.”  Dr. Rahimzadeh remembers several influential people that helped solidify his aspiration from “helping people” to “helping people as a healthcare professional.” Their family physician and other medical professionals in the family’s lives were monumental in helping him make this decision. Coupled with his natural love for the sciences, the decision to become a doctor became clear.   But the question remained, “How do I get started in the healthcare field?”  No Links to Healthcare? No Problem  With no physicians in his immediate family and no direct connections to healthcare, Dr. Rahimzadeh set off to follow the advice he received from the influential people in his life: get a job at a healthcare facility, regardless of what the job title is.  Some of his friends had recently joined Washoe Medical Center as patient transporters and mentioned job openings that were available. He sprang into action and headed to Washoe Medical Center to apply.  Just one problem – he didn’t have the EMT certification requirement.   Enter Barry O’Sullivan, who would be Dr. Rahimzadeh’s first supervisor at Washoe Medical Center (and a friend he still speaks with to this day). Barry saw promise in Dr. Rahimzadeh immediately. As a result, Barry made a suggestion to him that would ultimately set him on the course towards medicine.  “Barry told me that he had an open position that I could work while completing the senior year of my undergraduate degree and studying for my EMT certification and eventually becoming a patient transporter. He told me Washoe Medical Center would support me in this endeavor. So, I asked what the job was and learned it was driving a shuttle bus.”  Without hesitation, Dr. Rahimzadeh responded, “I’ll take it.”  And so, his fulfilling journey with Washoe Medical Center, and eventually Renown Health, began.  While he finished up the last few months of his degree at the University of Nevada, Reno, (UNR) Dr. Rahimzadeh proudly drove the shuttle bus a few days a week. The job not only helped him pay for his degree and put food on the table, but it also allowed him to begin living out his passion for helping people in the healthcare field.  Dr. Rahimzadeh graduated with his bachelor's degree in Pre-Medicine from UNR and finished his EMT certification program. Sure enough, Barry and Washoe Medical Center lived up to their promises and helped him secure his first direct healthcare job as an EMT and Patient Transporter with REMSA. But he didn’t stop there – after several years as a ground transporter, his career literally took flight. He joined REMSA Ground Ambulance and eventually Care Flight as a Flight EMT II, caring for patients that were flying to Washoe Medical Center from nearby communities that needed lifesaving medical care.  Helping save lives every day as a member of the emergency medical team is an ultimate feat, especially when it comes to Dr. Rahimzadeh. And he didn’t stop there.  Valuing One-on-One Connections  In the 1990s, as it is today, the U.S. experienced a significant primary care provider shortage which resulted in many medical schools encouraging students to complete their residencies in a primary care specialty, like internal medicine – which is precisely what Dr. Rahimzadeh set out to do at the University of Connecticut.   However, his mind would soon change about the course of his career.   “I had a deep, introspective conversation with my residency program director, openly and honestly chatting about my future,” Dr. Rahimzadeh said. “I ended up taking a week off of my residency and wrote a long pros and cons list about what I wanted to do with my life in the medical field.”  Eventually he decided on anesthesiology because of the opportunity to have a one-on-one relationship with every surgery patient, regardless of their procedure.  “Even though it’s for a short duration of time, it is a very impactful relationship,” he said. “I feel I am making a difference in the outcomes and lives of patients every day.”  Dr. Rahimzadeh finished his internal medicine residency in three years and passed his board exam, and he went on to do the same thing for anesthesiology. He then ventured back home to Reno.  Career Progression at Its Finest  Dr. Rahimzadeh knows that people don’t always get to settle down in a place that influenced their upbringing, care and dream, yet he was able to make that vision a reality for himself.  “I feel like Renown Health and myself have this intertwined relationship that led to my growth as a person and as a physician,” he said. “For that, I feel very blessed."  Upon his arrival back to Reno with two residencies under his belt, Dr. Rahimzadeh was quickly hired at one of the two anesthesiology groups in town at the time. He started his career with Sierra Anesthesia and after working for the group for several years, he joined Associated Anesthesiologists of Reno in 2014, which went on to become one of the largest anesthesiology groups in northern Nevada. The group continuously worked very closely with Renown, taking care of all of its surgical patient needs and eventually becoming Renown Medical Group employees as of April 1, 2022, with Dr. Rahimzadeh setting up his home base at the Renown South Meadows campus.  Today, Dr. Rahimzadeh wears three “hats” at Renown. As a medical professional first and foremost, his largest “hat” is his general anesthesiologist role, where he cares for patients in the operating room. Another significant “hat” is his role as the Medical Director for Surgical Services, where he reviews surgical patient charges alongside his dedicated team of nurses and ensures optimal patient outcomes by verifying they have had the appropriate workup to proceed with surgery in a safe manner. To round out his immense responsibilities with Renown, he serves as Chief of Staff for Renown South Meadows, where he makes connections with colleagues and collaborates with leaders to review protocols, policies and address concerns that arise.  Outside of Renown, Dr. Rahimzadeh is still a contributor within his own anesthesiology practice. He also is the current President of the Nevada State Society of Anesthesiologists and the Director to the Board of Directors of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, helping bridge the gap in anesthesia concerns between his northern and southern Nevada colleagues.  He reflects on the opportunities Renown and our local community have extended to him by saying, “If you can dream big enough and continue to chase your dreams, you can make it happen right here.”  On the COVID-19 Frontlines Nothing could prepare us for the dire situation hospitals on the east coast – especially those in Livingston, New Jersey – were experiencing at the beginning of the pandemic. Livingston was known as the “second hardest hit area” by COVID-19 in April of 2020. Hospitals were overwhelmed with patients in the ICU fighting for their lives. They needed help, and they needed help now.   Unable and unwilling to sit idly by, Dr. Rahimzadeh and six of his colleagues from his practice traveled to Livingston to help. They jumped in on the frontlines alongside other anesthesiologists and intensivists to offset the sudden influx of COVID-19 patients. Many lives were saved, and Dr. Rahimzadeh was a direct part of that.  “When you care and work with people that also care, you can move the needle a lot – it doesn’t matter where you're from,” he said.  Home Means Nevada – and Renown  Renown Health is deeply rooted in the northern Nevada community. Dr. Rahimzadeh is proud to be among a diverse team who have taken responsibility for its community for generations.   "We live in a very passionate and caring community, which is often underestimated,” he said. “It’s clear to me that Renown refuses to settle. Renown is incredibly progressive in providing the best for the community. We never remain stagnant, we keep moving forward and we take care of your loved ones. This health system has never been able to sit still and settle for the status quo. That stands out to me.”  One story especially sticks out to Dr. Rahimzadeh as the moment when he knew that Renown was home. In 1997 while working as a patient transporter, his grandmother passed away on the sixth floor of the Sierra Tower at what is now Renown Regional Medical Center. At the funeral, a huge bouquet of flowers arrived. Not being especially close to anyone in Reno yet, Dr. Rahimzadeh's family had no idea who sent the beautiful arrangement. Turns out, it was Rod Callahan, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Washoe Medical Center at the time.   “At that point, I knew I wasn’t just a part of a workforce with thousands of employees,” said Dr. Rahimzadeh. “The COO cared so much about me that he felt compelled to send such a wonderful gift during a tragic time. That’s the value of a local, community-focused hospital; the people here know you and care about you. There’s a reason why people stay at Renown for so long – we feel that connection.”  Dr. Rahimzadeh also reflected on how far Renown South Meadows has come, from the time he immigrated to the U.S. to today. “Growing up, Renown South Meadows was kind of a ‘mom and pop shop’ primarily serving senior citizens in one wing and surgical patients in the other,” he said. “Now, I am so proud to see how far it has come. It really made its niche in the community in a great way. The future is bright!”  It’s clear that Dr. Rahimzadeh is leaving a lasting legacy with his family, from the local community to global medicine. His son is a senior at Baylor University in Texas with a strong desire to go into medicine, just like his dad. His daughter is a junior at Bishop Manogue Catholic High School in Reno and enjoys being involved in her community. His loving wife is a speech therapist in the area. The Rahimzadeh family is thriving together, and they all share the same conviction about northern Nevada and Renown:  “This is home.”

    Department Spotlight: Legal

Order in the (healthcare) court! Being a transparent and accountable healthcare organization is in our roots and is a commitment we at Renown Health take seriously. In order to uphold that promise, a lot of legal work must be done behind-the-scenes. Contracts, subpoenas, trials, depositions, arbitrations and mediations, service and provider agreements, immigration processes, powers of attorney – the list goes on.  So, who brings that order to Renown? Answer: Renown’s Legal department. With a small-but-mighty team of attorneys, contract administrators, immigration specialists, paralegals and assistants, these professionals tackle the intricate balance between the law and the care our teams provide every day. Their dedicated work allows our health system to focus on what matters most – bringing healing to our community. Protecting the Protectors The Legal department at Renown serves as the backbone of our health system, ensuring that both patients and employees are protected within the complex web of regulations, standards and more. This team is immensely talented in guarding the integrity of the community-minded care we provide.  No matter what problem comes across their desk, the Legal team will step in to find a solution. In fact, problem-solving is a fundamental part of their everyday work.  “We are a support department; we support the people who do the important hands-on work with our patients,” said Paul Harris, Chief Legal Officer. “Most on the legal team are skilled problem solvers, so we often get questions that are not quintessentially legal but require us to help someone solve the puzzle. It is very gratifying work when we help the greater Renown team address complicated situations.”  Resolution is at the foundation of their role within our health system, so you, as the reader, can probably imagine how busy their day-to-day lives at work get. But never fear – this team thrives on overseeing many different aspects of the law when it comes to the patients and employees at Renown.  “What I love about my job is that every single day I feel like I solve a problem or help a patient, health plan member or internal ‘client’ at the organization,” said Jamie Winter, Deputy Chief Legal Officer. “I also love that every day is different.  On any given day I can be attending a committee meeting either as a member or as the legal advisor, attending an administrative law hearings,  appearing at a mediation or arbitration,  reviewing and negotiating contracts, overseeing litigation in coordination with outside counsel,  assisting with Hometown Health member appeals, assisting the Medical Staff Services team and medical staff leadership and committee chairs, reviewing  powers of attorney, guardianship orders and records requests . No two days are the same, which keeps my work interesting, fun, and exciting!”  “A day in the life of the Legal department is always different,” added Mary Ann Ellis, Associate General Counsel. “We handle many different areas of law, including issues from across all the departments as they arise. I work on drafting, revising, reviewing, negotiating or analyzing contracts, including non-disclosure agreements; business associate agreements; supply chain agreements, and physician or other professional service agreements. I also advise on employment matters and assist in responding to subpoenas or other government requests. I help draft or review different policies across the organization.”  Before Renown brings on any new physician or vendor, there is one key part of the process they all must take part in: contracts. Contract structure, negotiations and signings are all part of the onboarding process. And the Legal team has contracting down to a science.  “I work primarily on independent (physician) contracts; these contracts include call coverage, professional services agreements, medical director agreements and medical staff officer agreements,” added Adam Harris, Staff Attorney. “It is important to have these agreements in place so that our community physicians can legally and compliantly provide patient care."  “I maintain relationships with our community partners around their service contracts which allow them to treat patients at Renown,” added Jackie Johnston, Contract Administrator. “I also oversee our contract management software, working with multiple departments in maintaining a compliant contract structure for all contracts within Renown. I am proud of how we established a new policy around contract management and are assisting departments with onboarding the new system.”  In alignment with our commitment to employing a diverse workforce, Renown excitedly welcomes providers from across the world. This past year, our Human Resources and Legal teams saw a crucial need for a role that focuses exclusively on facilitating the processes for international hires: the Immigration Specialist.  “The Immigration Specialist position at Renown, which is a new role in the organization, is an excellent fit for my professional background and experience,” said Derrick Lacey, Immigration Specialist. “A day in the life involves interfacing with the Renown Medical Group's Provider Recruitment team, HR Operations and other departments which partner on behalf of physicians and nurses who require immigration sponsorship and support. Since joining Renown, I have been able to contribute the necessary technical skills and knowledge required for the role, while taking on the unique challenges and responsibilities associated with expanding Renown's existing footprint in the realm of employment-based immigration sponsorship.”  No matter the need, the Legal team is proud to support our many departments and has an open-door policy for any employee to come to them with any concern. “I am proud that people feel empowered to come to the Legal department and trust we will partner with them to find solutions to any problems,” said Mary Ann Ellis. “We work closely with various leaders on a regular basis to check in and make sure we meet their needs and keep everyone on track on meeting various contracting deadlines or other needs.”  Even if you don’t physically see the Legal team every day, the work they do is incredibly important to keep our health system running. After all, there is no order without law.  “The work we do in the Legal department may not always be front and center, but it’s critical to ensuring that patient care is provided safely, ethically and efficiently,” said Michelle Gibbons, Paralegal. “By ensuring compliance with laws, protecting patient privacy, mitigating risks and facilitating access to care, we create a legal framework that allows clinical teams to focus on what they do best: providing outstanding patient care.”  The Journey to Healthcare Law  Employment law, civil rights law, family law, criminal law, real estate law, corporate law...there are many fields of law an aspiring legal professional can delve into. So, what inspired our Legal department employees to enter into healthcare law?  Let’s hear from a few of these team members on how and why they ended up in this intense-yet-rewarding career field:  “I was a political science major as an undergraduate student in Washington, DC, and, during that time, I worked on Capitol Hill for a Nevada Senator and Nevada Governor. The natural progression for many political science students is to go to law school and I did just that. After law school, I worked as a litigator for 11 years and then came to Renown. Although I joined Renown after becoming an attorney, I started with Renown as the Hometown Health Compliance Officer to not only learn compliance, a fast-growing area at the time, but to also “get my foot in the door” in hopes of ultimately becoming an in-house attorney for Renown. Years later, I took a position as in-house counsel for the health plan and later moved to the larger Renown Health Legal Department to broaden my healthcare law practice.” - Jamie Winter “My life has always revolved around the legal field. My father was a District Judge in Douglas County for 25 years. He is currently serving as the Chief Justice of the Appellate Court of Nevada. My childhood involved campaigning and spending many hours at the Courthouse with my dad. It was a natural progression for me into the field of law after graduating college.” - Michelle Gibbons “My career background is in the area of global mobility, which involves the management of international employee populations and their movements, including immigration, relocation logistics, and international tax requirements, processes and compliance matters." - Derrick Lacey “I went to school for Retail Merchandising to further my career with a major retailer in Minnesota. After transferring to Reno and working in retail for many years, I wanted to explore new and rewarding challenges. I found the opportunity in the Renown Legal Department where I am now assisting in managing contracts and communicating with multiple providers to assist them with compliance metrics and payments.” - Jackie Johnston “Before attending law school, I worked in healthcare. It was a natural transition for me to apply my education in an industry with which I was already familiar, and Renown was an easy choice as the top hospital in the area.” - Adam Harris Our Legal team enjoys a reputation of being powerful yet personable in the office, the hospital and the courtroom. Many departments across our health system know they can rely on this team to provide the best possible solutions for them.  “I am most proud of growing my team to better assist the organization in multiple areas such as immigration, litigation and contract negotiation management,” said Bekah Riley, Manager of Legal Department & Board Liaison. “We have established a department recognized for its accessibility to other leaders and its role as problem solvers.”  “Our team's biggest accomplishments are generally associated with successful outcomes in litigation, or long-running projects that have, after much effort, been completed,” added Adam Harris.  As the old saying states, “the proof is in the pudding.” Our Legal team members are excited to share a few notable success stories of which they played a large role in.  "One success story that comes to mind is when the lab was being overwhelmed by law enforcement demands for legal blood draws and the resulting subpoenas,” said Mary Ann Ellis. “We worked with the district attorney, law enforcement and city leadership to develop some action plans for reducing that burden. Eventually, many of the law enforcement agencies reached a solution to get legal blood draws done by an outside organization, helping to reduce the burden on our teams. The district attorneys also agreed to various methods to try to make physical appearances in court less onerous.”  “As the newest member of the Legal team, I recently learned that an immigration sponsorship project I was asked to lead on my third day at Renown, which involved consulting on case strategy, as well as authorship of enhanced immigration support letter documentation, had been a resounding success,” added Derrick Lacey.  “We were able to make a big push on managing the many contracts entered into by the organization and help to maintain access and accountability,” added Paul Harris.  All in all, our Legal team’s commitment to legal excellence – from the start of their careers to today – not only safeguards the interests of our health system but also fosters an environment where quality of care can thrive.  “We are a dedicated team working behind the scenes to enhance the organization's overall productivity and support its strategic vision for the future,” said Bekah Riley. It’s All About the People At Renown, all our teams are committed to leaving a positive impact on our patients, fellow team members and community. The Legal department is no different. In a world where the intensities of both the healthcare space and legal space collide, they find support and solidarity in each other.  “I wanted to work somewhere that I felt I could make a difference in the community,” said Mary Ann Ellis. “Instead of working in a field that can traditionally be very adversarial, at Renown, I can use my skills in collaborative and positive ways to help the organization and the people in it. What keeps me here are the amazing people I get to work with every day. We have a small team that genuinely enjoys working together and have become friends over the years.”  Their commitment to giving back to their community aligned with Renown’s same commitment and was a defining reason for why they joined Team Renown. When values align, everything else can fall into the right place.  “I chose to work for Renown because of its reputation in the community and my desire to work as in-house counsel at a respected, local organization,” said Jamie Winter. “My mom worked as a nurse at Renown for many years and it is wonderful to now be working for the same organization where my mom provided patient care. What keeps me here is my amazing team and the people I work with throughout the organization. The individuals on my small legal team are very collaborative and supportive of one another. We work closely with the Risk, Compliance, and Payer Contracting teams, and we all work really well together.”  “I was drawn to Renown Health because of its strong commitment to providing high-quality, compassionate care to the community,” added Michelle Gibbons. “I really resonate with the organization's mission to improve the health and well-being of northern Nevada and beyond. Renown provides a collaborative and supportive work environment where I feel encouraged to grow and continue learning. The leadership and my colleagues are invested in my development, and there's a culture of teamwork that makes coming to work each day a positive experience.”  There is never a dull moment in healthcare – there is always something new to explore and discover. Our Legal team not only finds their work rewarding, but they also find it incredibly exciting.  “I had an opportunity early in my career to work with healthcare clients and professionals, and in my experience, there is not a more exciting job than sorting through the complexities of healthcare and hospital legal work,” said Paul Harris. “It's challenging every day, but I've been able to work with smart, innovative and motivated people. Renown has a great culture and working with dedicated people keeps me excited about my work here and Renown's future.”  Behind-the-scenes and above-the-standard, our Legal department consistently blows expectations out of the water. Anyone who walks through Renown’s doors can rest assured they are in the best of hands with this best-in-class team.  “We are a dedicated team working behind the scenes to enhance the organization's overall productivity and support its strategic vision for the future,” closes Bekah Riley.

Renown Health Expands Covid-19 Vaccination Requirement

Protecting employees and their families; providing the safest, highest-level of care to patients and supporting public health Renown Health, one of the region’s largest private employers with a work force of almost 7,000, and a not-for-profit integrated healthcare network serving over 1 million people across Nevada, today notified its employees that it will support the national Emergency Regulation and will require COVID-19 vaccination for all Renown Health employees. Communicating to employees today, Tony Slonim, MD, DrPH, President & CEO, wrote, “For the last nineteen months, we have done everything humanly possible to care for patients, our community and each other- and to keep people safe from COVID-19. Despite these efforts, too many people have fallen ill, suffered long-term effects or lost those they loved to this deadly disease.” He added, “I believe that as the leading anchor institution for our community, we are obligated to set a clear example of our trust in data and science, and to hold ourselves to the highest ethical and professional standards to keep our community safe. It is clear that the vaccine is safe and effective in reducing illness and saving lives and we encourage everyone who is medically able to do so, and within their religious guidelines, to get vaccinated.” Dr. Slonim thanked his staff for “heeding the call for vaccination and protecting those in our care who are ill and physically vulnerable, and ensuring a safe, COVID-19-free environment for them and for each other.” As of today, 80% percent of all 6,750 Renown Health employees have already been vaccinated or granted an approved exemption or deferral. On November 4th, The Biden-Harris Administration announced required COVID-19 vaccination of eligible staff at health care facilities that participate in the Medicare and Medicaid programs. The American Hospital Association, American Medical Association and multiple national societies representing medical professionals and at least 174 health care organizations nationally have recommended that vaccination be required for all healthcare personnel as a condition of employment. COVID-19 vaccination prevents serious illness, hospitalization and death. Documented declines in cases since mass vaccination began prove the COVID-19 vaccines are both safe and effective, and are crucial to decreasing the spread of the virus. Renown’s requirement applies to all employees, new hires and students. Chief Medical Officers strongly endorse the mandate. “Our role is to provide the safest, highest-level of care to people who come to us for care, and we must do our part to support public health, which has been greatly enhanced in this state because of the utilization and uptake of the vaccine,” said Rahul Mediwala, MD, CPE, Chief Medical Officer, Health Services. Dr. Mediwala was instrumental in Renown’s volunteer effort to administer 80,000 vaccinations to employees and community members, and now to children ages 5-11 at its Hometown Health location earlier this year. We know that there’s some hesitancy that exists, but the data are clear that these vaccinations have been very effective in preventing hospitalizations, severe complications and deaths from COVID-19,” says Susan Lee, DO, MBA, Chief Medical Officer, Acute Services. “We encourage all colleagues, patients, and community members to receive the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible.”   The Biden-Harris Administration requirements will apply to approximately 76,000 providers and cover over 17 million health care workers across the country. The regulation will create a consistent standard within Medicare and Medicaid while giving patients assurance of the vaccination status of those delivering care. Facilities covered by this regulation must establish a policy ensuring all eligible staff have received the first dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or a one-dose COVID-19 vaccine prior to providing any care, treatment, or other services by December 6, 2021. All eligible staff must have received the necessary shots to be fully vaccinated – either two doses of Pfizer or Moderna or one dose of Johnson & Johnson – by January 4, 2022. The regulation also provides for exemptions based on recognized medical conditions or religious beliefs, observances, or practices. Facilities must develop a similar process or plan for permitting exemptions in alignment with federal law. Renown will do direct outreach to those employees who have not yet been vaccinated, to be sure they understand the regulations, implications, and options available to them. Dr. Slonim closed his announcement to employees today by saying, “While we understand this is a heavy issue for many, the mandate is clear and is one we will abide by. It is the right thing to do for our patients and each other.”   About Renown Health Renown Health is a locally governed, not-for-profit integrated healthcare network serving northern Nevada, Lake Tahoe and northeast California.
