Why Am I So Tired? 9 Reasons for Your Chronic Exhaustion
Do you find yourself struggling to stay awake during the day or having no energy? You’re not alone. Whether you’re a full-time employee, a student or retiree, that “I’m tired” feeling comes in all shapes and sizes. What’s even more frustrating is not knowing the source of your exhaustion. Dr. Brandon Flores, a sleep medicine physician with Renown Medical Group, breaks down nine key reasons why you may be feeling so fatigued. You did not get enough sleep, or your quality of sleep is poor. This may seem obvious, but in today’s “rise and grind” culture, sleep can be considered a luxury rather than what it really is: a necessity. Ensuring you get adequate hours of sleep between 6-9 hours and quality sleep is essential. You may not be breathing well during sleep. Interruptions to your breathing, such as snoring, can decrease airflow at night causing your sleep to be less restorative. This is often due to Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). OSA can lead to daytime fatigue and sleepiness and can also impact other chronic health conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes, acid reflux, migraines and heart rhythm. You are not getting enough regular exercise, or you are exercising too much. Incorporating at least 30 minutes a day of physical activity can help keep you energized throughout the day. It has also been shown to increase deep slow wave sleep, which is often associated with feeling rested. On the other hand, getting too much exercise can tire you out more easily and heighten stress levels. You drink too much caffeine. This one may seem counterintuitive – caffeine is supposed to keep you awake, right? Well, overdoing it with your favorite coffee or soda could affect your sleep quality. Pay attention to your caffeine limits and have a cut-off time, as most caffeine should not be consumed past noon. You have a food allergy or intolerance. If you find yourself feeling especially tired after eating a lot of a certain food, you could have an allergy or intolerance to it – and vice versa. Consider speaking with your primary care provider (PCP) about a food allergy test or being referred to an allergist. You’re drinking too many alcoholic beverages. Alcohol is a depressant, which as the word implies, can make you feel especially tired during the day. It can also affect your breathing at night and disrupt your sleep cycle. Cutting back on alcoholic drinks may be beneficial to your overall health. You are anemic. This is the leading cause of fatigue in women but can affect people of all genders. It can be associated with low iron. Eating foods high in iron, including leafy greens and many different meats, can help your iron levels. A blood test ordered by your PCP can help you understand if you are iron deficient. You are experiencing depression or anxiety. Emotional exhaustion can be just as taxing as physical exhaustion. Prolonged feelings of sadness, hopelessness, nervousness or panic can be signs and symptoms of depression or anxiety. Speak with your provider about the many resources available to help you. You have an underactive thyroid. Feeling fatigued can also be a symptom of hypothyroidism, which affects your metabolism and energy levels. Medication can help get your thyroid back to normal. Your PCP can order a blood test to determine your thyroid levels. If you experience severe exhaustion that lasts six months or longer, worsens after physical or mental exertion and does not get better after resting, it could be a sign of myalgic encephalomyelitis, otherwise known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). This is a diagnosis of exclusion, and other causes must be ruled out. While there are no tests that detect CFS, your provider can order blood and urine tests to rule out other causes of your fatigue and help develop a care plan. © Africa Images via Canva.com

Pandemic Pals and Sterling Silver Club Members
A Friendship Gone Viral When a friendship is strong enough, it can survive just about anything – even a pandemic! Sterling Silver Club members and longtime friends, Marlene and Kim, are living and thriving proof of that. Career & Community Cohorts With successful careers in the Reno area and a common passion for community involvement, it’s no surprise the women knew of each other even before their friendship developed. The first time they actually worked together was in 2001 at TMWA (Truckee Meadows Water Authority), where Marlene’s company was brought on board to steer communications and Kim was heading up the then-new utility’s customer relations department. TMWA was where these colleagues became cohorts who have since become the best of friends. Now retired, Kim’s favorite job these days is being a doting “Noni” to her two granddaughters who live nearby and who she keeps up with by staying active. Kim enjoys practicing yoga and loves to spend time walking and hiking in the great outdoors – with two enthusiastic dogs that are always ready to join her. Marlene is still working and running her nearly 40-year-old public engagement and outreach company, GoodStanding. Her “fun and interesting” projects help to build community engagement for her clients and often focus on water resource management and conservation. The Rotary Club of Reno, known as the “downtown club,” is also an important part of both women’s lives. Marlene was just the third woman to join the historically male organization in 1991 and made it her mission to recruit and sponsor female members – like Kim. Today, women make up nearly half of the membership and Marlene and Kim are both heavily involved in the club and its initiatives, including its scholarship program and community beautification projects along Riverside Drive. A Friendly Q & A To learn more about the friends and maintaining friendships in these socially distanced times, we asked them some questions. What drew you to each other as friends? Kim: Marlene’s honesty, integrity and ethics. Marlene always does what is best for her clients, no matter what. Marlene: Kim and I communicate very well. It’s hard to explain, but sometimes we are both way ahead of our words. How would you describe each other in a single word? Marlene: Focused. Don’t put anything in front of Kim that you don’t want done, and done expertly. Also, helper. She thrives on helping people and working through their problems. Kim: Creative! Marlene came up with many unique ideas to promote and publicize TMWA. And her house the most cozy spaces to sit and visit. Do you have a favorite “That’s so her” moment to share? Kim: Burning Man! Marlene had friends with a camp at Burning Man and she invited me to join them for three days a number of years ago. We rode our bikes, admired the art and did our best to sleep through the techno music that played through the night. It was an amazing time. Marlene: Kim’s involvement in Rotary’s Achievement Beyond Obstacles (a support and scholarship program for deserving local high school students). She has a heart for kids facing challenges, she is a great leader and she loves to help and make a difference. How has COVID-19 affected your friendship, how have things changed and how have things stayed the same? Kim: We don’t see each other in person quite as much. However, Marlene has made sure that many of our girlfriends are able to stay in touch. Marlene: I don’t take for granted we are going to see each other, so we plan it. I am the instigator of walks, socially distanced get-togethers in our green space and Zoom meetings. This new normal has also given me permission to stay home and work. Now, it’s OK to do some gardening or take a walk in the middle of the day. I suppose that’s one pleasant side effect of COVID-19. Why did you become members of the Sterling Silver Club and why would you encourage others to join? Kim: So many friends and family members had nothing but good things to say about Renown that I decided to switch providers. I also really liked what Renown was doing with the Healthy Nevada Project. So, when I saw the Sterling Silver Club, it seemed to me to be just another extension of all the good things Renown has to offer! Marlene: This Club sounded interesting because it would allow me to focus more on my health with like-minded people in my age group. And, I’m with Kim, Healthy Nevada Project is very intriguing for how it could potentially improve health care for all of us. What is the secret to a lasting friendship? Kim: Have patience. Don’t take things personally. Be flexible. And just enjoy one another’s company. Marlene: Respect and grace, equally. We are not perfect and we are all different. So give your friends respect always, grace when they flub up and support when they need help. Thanks to Kim and Marlene for being such generous collaborators and ambassadors of the Sterling Silver Club. Friend Fun Fact: Kim helped Marlene find her new house a few years ago – and more recently, a new dog! Marlene and “Levi” have been inseparable ever since.

UNR Med and Renown Chair of Psychiatry Talks About Asking, Listening and Reminding Others They Are Not Alone In Their Fight
During September, Suicide Prevention Month, Dr. Takesha Cooper shares her thoughts on how you can support others As we observe National Suicide Prevention Month this September, Renown Health and University of Nevada Reno School of Medicine reaffirm a commitment to addressing mental health challenges and preventing comprehensive support to those at risk of suicide. Suicidal thoughts, much like mental health conditions, can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or background. Suicidal thoughts, although common, should not be considered normal and often indicate more serious issues. Takesha Cooper, MD, MS, FAPA, Chair, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Professor of Psychiatry, University of Nevada Reno School of Medicine and Chief, Behavioral Health - Renown Health, Stacie Mathewson Behavioral Health & Addiction Institute, underscores the importance of creating safe spaces, listening without judgement and reminding others that they are not alone in their fight. “I frequently engage in conversations about suicide, a topic that touches many aspects of my life and work. As a psychiatrist, I have the privilege of sitting with my patients as they share their painful suicidal thoughts, and I strive to create a space where they feel safe to express their feelings openly and withoutjudgment. As a child and adolescent psychiatrist, I share the concerns of parents who worry deeply about their teens’ overwhelming emotions, self-injury, and feelings of hopelessness. Together, we work on simply validating their child's experiences, even when the instinct as a parent is to try and 'fix' things. As a mother, I can’t help but think about my own children and their peers, many of whom are grappling with depression and anxiety, especially in the wake of the pandemic. And as a teacher of resident physicians, I guide my learners in recognizing the signs of suicide in their patients and ensuring they have the tools to offer support and safety.” Providing care and support has always been my priority, but I also recognize that mental health is a complex journey, and everyone faces unique struggles. My training, and a deep respect for what my patients have taught me, allow me to navigate difficult conversations about hopelessness, but I believe the most crucial part of my role is simply being present, listening without judgment, and reminding people that they're not alone in their fight.” As we observe Suicide Prevention Month this September, I am reminded of the profound impact that simply asking and listening can have. Join Forces with Local Businesses to Make Isolation Gowns
The availability of face masks for healthcare workers has been a popular topic of discussion amid the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there’s another piece of essential personal protective equipment (PPE) that’s become difficult to come by – isolation gowns. To help meet local demand for this critical piece of equipment, University of Nevada, Reno’s Department of Art Fabrication Lab, Miller’s Jackets and Printing Services of Nevada have teamed up to use their unique resources to produce isolation gowns at no cost to Renown Health. The isolation gown production process starts at the Fabrication Lab – commonly referred to as the “Fab Lab” – with rolls of Kona Cotton fabric purchased by Renown. From there, Fab Lab manager Nicole Miller feeds the fabric into the Zund G3 digital CNC machine to begin the production process. Using a design software, Miller digitized Renown’s isolation gown template and created three sizes – small, medium and large. These digital blueprints serve as instructions for the machine to cut the fabric. Thanks to this state-of-the-art cutting machine and Miller’s streamlined efforts, it takes just 68 seconds to cut out one gown. See the Zund G3 digital CNC machine in action. “COVID-19 has affected us all in unprecedented ways,” said Miller. “It means so much knowing that we can help our local healthcare workers who are working so hard for the whole community. At its core, the department of arts’ Fab Lab is designed to enable our students and faculty to create interdisciplinary research. Pivoting to PPE production just allows us to use our equipment and skill set to solve problems in an applied design environment.” From there, the cut gown fabric is taken to Miller’s Jackets where it is sewn in accordance with Renown’s gown pattern. The company had previously sewn masks to help meet the demands of local hospitals towards the beginning of the pandemic. Jeff Richards, owner of Printing Services of Nevada and partner of Miller’s Jackets, saw how quickly Renown employees responded to the COVID-19 crisis and wanted to give back to area healthcare workers in any way he could. “With less work coming in due to the shutdown, I wanted to offer my time and resources to assist the community,” said Richards. “I strategized with my partner at Miller’s Jackets, Chris Robb, about what to do next. After discovering Renown’s need for isolations gowns, it was an easy decision for us to continue putting our staff and sewing machines to good use for our local hospitals.” Tony Slonim, MD, D.Ph., president and CEO of Renown Health states, “There is nothing more important to me than providing our caregivers at the front line with the resources they need to Contact: Renown Public Relations M: 775-691-7308 E: news@renown.org feel well-cared for, supported and confident in their practice. In my experience, as both an intensivist and a registered nurse, there is special feeling when you wear a garment that was hand-made for you. I know our caregivers will feel the love and appreciation expressed by the talented craftspeople of the University of Nevada, Reno’s Department of Art Fabrication Lab, Miller’s Jackets and Printing Services of Nevada when they don these special garments. We appreciate the innovative thinking and generosity of these local business leaders to support Renown Health caregivers and patients. Despite the slowing of business, Printing Services of Nevada is committed to paying Miller’s Jackets employees and volunteers for their time, and covering the cost of any materials beyond the fabric supplied by Renown Health. Miller’s Jackets has opened up its industrial sewing machines for the isolation gown project and also called on volunteers to sew from their personal machines at home. “Renown’s healthcare workers put their lives on the line for the public every day,” said Robb. “They don’t have the luxury of getting to stay out of harm’s way. They do so much for us. If there’s anything we can do to make their lives a little easier and less stressful, it’s worth it.” Since the inception of this collaboration on April 16, the Fab Lab, Miller’s Jackets and Printing Services of Nevada have helped produce 150 isolation gowns, which will all benefit Renown caregivers. Once worn, the gowns can be sterilized and reused, helping Renown extend the life of its personal protective equipment, which helps ensure the health and safety of care givers. Renown’s director of service excellence Amber Maraccini says, “One of the many positives I’ve seen come out of these uncertain times is our community’s willingness to give and collaborate. We extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to those helping our caregivers fight the good fight every day.” Renown has a total goal of 10,000 community-donated isolation gowns.
