Sophie’s Place, An Exciting New Integrative Treatment Space Opens to Inspire Young Song Writers, Singers and Musicians at Renown Children’s Hospital
NFL Hall of Famer Steve Young and his wife Barb, The Beach Boys and community donors celebrate the grand opening of Sophie’s Place, a new integrative treatment space at Renown Children’s Hospital dedicated to the healing arts. (Photo Credit: David Calvert) Today marks the grand opening of Sophie’s Place at Renown Children’s Hospital which is supported by The Forever Young Foundation, founded by Barb Young and her husband NFL Hall of Famer Steve Young, and designed by Anne Marie and Kent Barton (Sophie’s parents). The Forever Young Foundation has supported the development of eight Sophie’s Places across the United States. The opening at Renown Health is the ninth Sophie’s Place location to provide music therapy to young people in children’s hospitals across the nation. Two years ago, on June 5, 2022, over 500 generous donors attended a benefit concert by The Beach Boys with front man Mike and his wife Jacquelyne Love, both Nevada residents; and special guests Steve and Barb Young, to help Renown Health Foundation raise a remarkable $1.2 million to construct the first and only Sophie’s Place in Nevada. Children's Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals celebrity ambassador Steve Young has helped raise over $1 billion to lift up children’s hospitals around the nation. The Forever Young Foundation established Sophie’s Place in 2013 in loving memory of Sophie Barton, a young musician with a passion for helping others, who passed away in 2010. Sophie served and played her guitar at Primary Children’s Hospital in Utah. Sophie's Place was inspired by Barb Young, a close friend of the Barton family and an avid believer in the science of music therapy. Her passion and commitment were crucial in bringing this specialized care to the many pediatric patients and their families served by Renown Children’s Hospital. “At Renown, we recognize the profound impact that music can have on the healing process,” says Brian Erling, MD, MBA, President & CEO, Renown Health. “We are grateful to Steve and his wife Barb Young, the Forever Young Foundation, Mike and his wife Jacquelyne Love and The Beach Boys and hundreds of community donors for this incredible gift for the region’s only Children’s Hospital. We are excited to see, and hear, how kids will sing, play, dance and create in this new space. We will continue to create a healing environment within our hospitals to support recovery and enhance health and happiness.” Barb Young says, “Research has proven that music therapy fires the synapses to help create new neuro-pathways to replace those that have been damaged. It increases oxygen-saturation levels, alleviates pain, eases anxiety and depression, assists in fine and gross motor skill development, and so much more. We are honored to partner with Renown Children’s Hospital as we share with you the building of our newest Sophie’s Place space, a music-therapy room which will bring hope, healing and harmony to the children being treated in this special CMN Children’s Hospital.” Sophie’s Place is fully equipped with musical instruments and games for both children and music therapists to use, allowing patients and their families the opportunity to relax and socialize outside of the hospital room. The space also includes: Room for individual and group music therapy sessions Opportunities for patients to record their music Separate practice, recording and editing rooms Microphones Performance space Comfortable seating Musical memorabilia and artwork “Child and family-centered care is fundamental to all of us at Renown Children’s Hospital, which means we understand that comprehensive pediatric medicine goes beyond the clinical aspects,” says Kris Deeter, MD, MBA, FAAP, Chair of Pediatrics, UNR Med and Physician-in-Chief, Renown Children’s Hospital. “Providing our young patients and their families with therapeutic experiences goes hand in hand with the excellent care provided by our physicians, nurses and clinicians. Renown has a team of Child Life Specialists who support this holistic manner of providing care, and Sophie’s Place helps create an environment that supports treatment, recovery and well-being. Together, music and medicine can work in harmony to heal the body, mind and soul.” Steve Young shared, “through Sophie’s Place, Sophie’s heart continues to beat on.” “Sophie’s Place is an example of what happens when our community comes together to invest and imagine in all that is possible,” says Greg Walaitis, Renown Health Foundation Chief Development Officer. As a charitable, not-for-profit organization we rely on the generosity of people like Steve and Barb Young, Mike and Jacquelyne Love and The Beach Boys and the many generous donors who helped us raise the funds needed construct this new music therapy room at Renown Children’s Hospital.” For more information about supporting pediatric care at Renown Children’s Hospital, visit renown.org/Foundation. At a press conference this week, Renown Health Foundation announced its partnership with San Francisco 49ers legend and NFL Hall of Famer Steve Young and the Forever Young Foundation to build a Sophie’s Place at Renown Children’s Hospital. The music therapy room, set to break ground later this year, is specially designed for children and their loved ones to enjoy music and other interactive activities during their hospital stay. A longtime Children's Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals celebrity ambassador, Young has helped raise over $1 billion to support children’s hospitals around the nation like Renown’s Children’s Hospital. His passion for giving back to pediatric patients, coupled with one remarkable friendship, led to the evolution of Sophie's Place. Established in 2013 by the Forever Young Foundation, Sophie’s Place was created in loving memory of singer, songwriter and dear friend of the Young family, Sophie Barton. Sophie often sang in hospitals, understanding music’s power to heal people of all ages. Barb and Steve Young shared, "Research has proven that music therapy fires the synapses to help create new neuro-pathways to replace those that have been damaged. There will also be a healing arts playroom equipped with games, art supplies and TV. This unique, music oasis was thoughtfully designed to help patients create meaningful connections with others, serve as a positive distraction from the unknowns that may accompany a trip to the hospital, and most importantly, encourage expression, creativity and healing. Project renderings may be accessed here. “Thanks to the support of Barb and Steve Young and the Forever Young Foundation, we are proud to add a music therapy room to our Healing Arts program,” said Renown’s Chief Development Officer, Greg Walaitis. “The first of its kind in our community, Sophie’s Place will provide our youngest patients a calm and beautiful space to take a break from the hospital environment, where they can relax, socialize and just enjoy being kids.” “We are extremely fortunate to have the Forever Young Foundation as generous partners who share Renown’s commitment of investing for the future,” said Max Coppes, M.D., Ph. Groundbreaking Historic Milestone: Renown Pioneers Histosonics Edison® System Delivering Histotripsy for Non-Invasive Liver Tumor Treatment
Renown’s Surgical Oncology team amongst the first to use HistoSonics' image guided histotripsy system to deliver non-invasive, personalized treatments for patients with liver tumors, thanks to a private donation. Watch this video to learn more about the technology. Renown Health announced today that the first patients have received targeted liver tumor treatments through the Edison® System histotripsy technology, which uses focused ultrasound waves to noninvasively destroy a designated tissue or tumor in the liver. This revolutionary technology represents a significant advancement in providing leading-edge surgical care to patients. Renown joins the Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins in being amongst the first in the country to offer this revolutionary non-invasive clinical procedure. Surgical oncologists Christos A. Galanopoulos MD, MBA, MSc, FACS; Nicholas Manguso, MD; and Randy Zuckerman, MD of the William N. Pennington Cancer Institute at Renown Health, are amongst the first physicians in the world trained to perform the procedure which destroys both primary and metastatic liver tumors, including those that can’t otherwise be removed surgically. Renown’s multidisciplinary team includes surgical oncologists, radiologists, oncologists and nurses who collaborate to provide comprehensive care tailored to each patient’s needs. “At Renown Health, we are constantly investing in our clinicians, essential services, and medical innovations to help keep care local,” said Brian Erling, MD, MBA, President & CEO for Renown Health. “We are grateful to a generous local donor, who provided us with a $1.4-million private donation to help purchase the equipment, training and to establish one of the few histotripsy programs in the U.S. at Renown. This non-invasive technology is a game changer in helping our liver surgeons and surgical oncologists to target and destroy malignant tissue in patients with either liver cancer or tumors that have spread to the liver from cancers based elsewhere in the body. This means people can now stay close to home and loved ones, and no longer need to leave Nevada for this type of advanced care.” “As a surgeon, it’s rewarding to offer a procedure where we can precisely destroy liver tumors without using a scalpel or needles, enabling a patient’s quick recovery while avoiding certain complications common with other modalities,” says Dr. Christos Galanopoulos, Chair, Department of Surgery at Renown Health, and one of the oncology surgeons trained to perform the HistoSonics procedure. “Histotripsy uses focused ultrasound waves to mechanically destroy targeted tissue, offering a promising alternative to traditional surgical methods. This non-invasive approach reduces recovery time, minimizes complications, and improves patient outcomes. We look forward to the role this innovative technology will have in our treatment plans going forward.” Revolutionary Technology “Histotripsy is a novel form of therapeutic ultrasound that precisely targets and liquefies tissue without damaging surrounding structures,” says Dr. Randy Zuckerman, surgical oncologist at Renown. “The system works by sending out focused ultrasound to targeted areas of tissue. The ultrasound energy creates pressure in the targeted tumor causing naturally existing gas bubbles to rapidly expand and collapse, helping break down and liquefy the targeted tissue. The entire process—from pre-treatment planning to real-time visualization—is assisted by advanced imaging technologies. We are confident that histotripsy will have a meaningful impact for patients suffering from unresectable liver disease, including liver tumors, and we are excited to share this advancement with our patients and community.” The HistoSonics Edison® System and histotripsy procedure allows for: Precision and Accuracy: Histotripsy targets only the tumor cells, sparing adjacent healthy tissue, which is particularly advantageous in treating tumors located near critical structures. Non-Invasiveness: As a completely non-invasive procedure, histotripsy eliminates the need for incisions, resulting in less pain and potentially faster recovery times for patients. Reduced Risk of Complications: With no need for surgical intervention, patients face a lower risk of infection, bleeding, and other post-operative complications commonly seen in more invasive procedures. Renown’s Commitment to Innovation “The introduction of histotripsy underscores Renown Health’s dedication to staying at the forefront of medical advancements,” says Bill Plauth, MD, Chief Medical Officer for Renown Health and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine. “By continually investing in the latest technologies and treatment modalities, we can ensure that patients receive the highest standard of care - right here in Reno.” Clinical trial results recently shared by the company showed that physicians were able to achieve a technical success rate of 95.5% in targeting and destroying malignant tissue in 44 patients with either liver cancer or tumors that had spread to the liver from cancers based elsewhere in the body. Thanks to the Generosity of Our Community "Through the generosity of our community, we are working to provide the best expertise, technology and programs for our patients,” said Greg Walaitis, Chief Development Officer, Renown Health Foundation. “As the only charitable, not-for-profit integrated academic healthcare organization in Reno, we appreciate that our community has helped us further our healing mission."
