Position Purpose

Provide specialized medical care and surgical expertise in the field of abdominal transplantation and perform transplant surgeries and organ procurements, both from living and deceased donors, to improve the quality of life for patients suffering from end-stage organ disease. This position requires a high level of technical skill, extensive medical knowledge, and the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team. Incumbent must have a working knowledge of kidney transplantation including management of patients with End Stage Renal Disease, the selection of appropriate recipients for transplantation, donor selection, histocompatibility and tissue typing, immediate postoperative and continuing inpatient care, the use of immunosuppressive therapy including side effects of the drugs and complications of immunosuppression, differential diagnosis of renal dysfunction in the allograft recipient, histologic interpretation of allograft biopsies, interpretation of ancillary tests for renal dysfunction, and long term outpatient care.

 

 

 

Nature and Scope

The Abdominal Transplant Surgeon plays a pivotal role in the comprehensive management of Transplant Services, assuming responsibility for both the administrative and clinical operations. This encompasses a wide range of tasks, such as overseeing quality management processes, evaluating and selecting patients and donors, performing intricate transplant and organ procurement surgeries, promoting, and upholding high standards of practice, and actively engaging in the development of transplant policies, protocols, and practice guidelines. Additionally, the Abdominal Transplant Surgeon actively participates in rigorous performance improvement monitoring to continuously enhance the quality of care provided to transplant recipients.

1. Demonstrate clinical proficiency in the field of abdominal organ transplantation, with a specific focus on kidney transplant as well as living and deceased donor Nephrectomy;

2. Assume responsibility for providing clinical expertise in managing patient care, ensuring optimal treatment outcomes, and promoting patient well-being;

3. Ability to function effectively in an integrated delivery system;

4. Collaborate with colleagues in research endeavors, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the field of organ transplantation;

5. Knowledge of Federal, State, and local regulatory rules;

6. Effective leadership skills (and leading by example);

Minimum Qualifications

Name

Description

Education:

Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing, and speaking English. Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree or foreign equivalent (such as MBBS or MBChB), or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.

Experience:

Completion of an ASTS-accredited Multi-organ Abdominal Transplantation fellowship or a foreign equivalent (24 months formal transplant fellowship).

Specific experience in Kidney Transplant and transplant immunology and involvement in all levels of pre-, peri-, and post-operative patient care.

Primary surgeon on at least forty kidney transplants. Cases must be documented (date of transplant, medical record no. and/or UNOS identification no. and role of surgeon in operative procedure).

Primary surgeon on at least twenty-five multi-organ procurements. At least 3 of these donors must be multiple organs and at least 10 must be deceased donor. Cases must be documented (date of procurement, medical record and/or UNOS identification number, and location of the donor).

Primary surgeon on at least twelve living donor nephrectomies. Cases must be documented (date of nephrectomy, medical record and/or UNOS identification number, and location of the donor).

License(s):

Must possess and maintain a current and valid State of Nevada Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic (DO) medicine license. Controlled substance License to Prescribe issued by the State of Nevada and Controlled Substance Registration Certificate issued by the DEA, required.

Certification(s):

Board-Certified in Urology with Active Practice in Surgery and Kidney Transplantation by the American Board of Surgery (ABS).

Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Certification Life Support (ACLS) required. Prefer American Heart Association (AHA) approved certification, but will accept online certification from American Red Cross Training Services, Advanced Medical Certification, or ACLS Certification Institute

Computer / Typing:

Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, and Word and have the ability to use the computer to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.

 

Ability to credential through Renown’s Medical Staff and/or payor credentialing, as applicable.
